To fix YouTube Live stream buffering from an OVHcloud VPS, first determine whether the problem is on the outbound stream to YouTube or only in viewers’ playback. Check OBS dropped frames and connection status alongside YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and time-stamped errors. If ingest is clean but viewers still buffer, investigate viewer networks and latency settings instead of assuming the VPS route is at fault.
First identify where buffering starts
“Buffering” can describe two different failures: the encoder cannot reliably send video to YouTube, or YouTube’s stream reaches some viewers inconsistently. The checks below help localize the issue; neither one alone proves a general OVHcloud or India network fault.
Look for outbound ingest trouble
During a controlled test, watch OBS’s connection status and network dropped-frame counter, then inspect the YouTube Live Control Room health indicator and time-stamped messages. If OBS reports increasing network drops or disconnects, or YouTube reports ingest errors, investigate the VPS-to-YouTube path, available upload capacity and encoder settings. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign of an unstable connection or one unable to sustain the configured bitrate (OBS connection troubleshooting). YouTube’s live error guide identifies inadequate bandwidth, incorrect bitrate and keyframes sent too infrequently among potential problems.
Check whether the interruption is viewer-side
If OBS stays connected, its dropped-frame count does not rise, and Live Control Room does not show ingest errors while viewers report buffering, compare reports by viewer network and device. Check the selected latency mode as well: a small read-ahead buffer can make playback more sensitive to network variation even when your incoming stream is healthy.

Measure sustained upload capacity from the VPS
Test the actual VPS, not just the advertised port speed or a speed-test peak. A brief high result does not show that the server can sustain a chosen bitrate to YouTube’s ingest endpoint throughout a broadcast. When possible, measure toward the relevant destination and repeat measurements at times representative of the stream.
YouTube recommends at least 20% additional upload bandwidth beyond the total stream bitrate. Include primary and backup streams, if you use both, before adding that headroom. Available capacity can also be affected by other traffic sharing the connection (YouTube streaming tips).

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Calculate the load: Add the primary stream bitrate and any backup stream bitrate. Multiply the total by 1.2 to apply YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Measure from the server: Run repeated speed and route checks from the VPS, ideally toward the relevant YouTube ingest destination. Treat a generic speed test as a clue, not proof of sustained route capacity.
- Compare the result: If sustained outbound capacity does not exceed the calculated target, reduce bitrate or resolution and test again before going live.
OVHcloud documents speed, route and latency diagnostic tools in its network tools guide. Tools such as route and latency probes can add context, but they may not reproduce the exact path used by your individual VPS and stream.
Match OBS settings to YouTube’s recommendations and your measured route
Choose an encoder format and bitrate that the real VPS connection can sustain, then run a representative test with movement and audio. YouTube’s current settings vary by resolution, frame rate and codec; its recommendations include these H.264 examples:

| H.264 format | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube encoder-setting recommendations, not evidence that a particular VPS route can sustain those rates. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for your intended format, codec and frame rate; settings can change. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 and AV1 ingest options, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
Check bitrate and keyframe errors
Read the exact Live Control Room error rather than changing unrelated settings at random. An incorrect bitrate can interfere with transcoding and delivery. YouTube also warns that keyframes sent too infrequently can cause buffering; correct the keyframe interval or other setting indicated by the message, then run another test. The YouTube live error guide explains these ingest warnings.

Lower the target if the route cannot hold it
If measured capacity is inadequate or unstable, lower the bitrate and, if needed, the resolution or frame rate. Retest under representative conditions. Choosing a larger number because a short speed test briefly reached it will not make the route sustainable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a latency mode that fits the broadcast
YouTube explains that read-ahead buffering is a principal source of stream latency: less buffer can reduce delay but leaves less protection against variation between encoder and viewer. Normal latency is the safer starting point for non-interactive broadcasts and is the mode YouTube describes as having the lowest viewer buffering. Low latency balances delay and reliability for some interaction; ultra-low latency is aimed at real-time interaction and may increase buffering.

Choose the lowest latency your audience interaction actually needs, then compare viewer experience. YouTube says most low-latency viewers experience latency under 10 seconds and most ultra-low-latency viewers under five seconds; these figures describe latency, not a speed guarantee (YouTube latency guidance).
Verify the VPS region and interpret OVHcloud plan details carefully
Do not assume an OVHcloud VPS serving India is physically hosted in India. OVHcloud’s India VPS page says it has no datacentres in India and serves the market from nearby regions. Check the actual region selected for your instance. The page also lists plan-level bandwidth and traffic terms, with Asia-Pacific exceptions; confirm the terms at order time because product details can change.
A listed port speed or plan allowance is not a measurement of stable throughput from your instance to YouTube’s ingest service, and buying hosting is not a demonstrated fix for buffering. OVHcloud’s diagnostics guide describes Looking Glass for route and routing checks, Proof for speed tests, Smokeping for ICMP reachability, latency and path history, and Weathermap for backbone link load (OVHcloud network diagnostics). Use these alongside measurements from the VPS itself; a probe may follow a different path.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| OBS network dropped frames are increasing | Unstable outbound connection or insufficient capacity for the configured bitrate | Measure sustained upload from the VPS; reduce bitrate or resolution if the connection lacks headroom. |
| OBS disconnects or YouTube reports ingest errors | Encoder-to-ingest path or a setting named in the error | Read the time-stamped Live Control Room message; check bandwidth, bitrate and keyframe frequency, then retest. |
| YouTube flags bitrate or keyframes | Encoder configuration | Match the relevant YouTube recommendation and correct the explicit error before testing again. |
| Ingest looks healthy but some viewers buffer | Viewer network, device or latency tolerance | Compare affected viewers’ networks and devices; use Normal latency as the starting point for a non-interactive broadcast. |
| A speed test looks fast but the stream still drops frames | Peak test result may not represent sustained performance or the actual ingest route | Repeat measurements from the VPS under representative conditions and compare sustained capacity with total bitrate plus headroom. |
