If they improve, shared upload capacity is likely involved. Then reduce or reschedule the competing transfer, or lower OBS’s bitrate or resolution until both jobs fit within your stable upload capacity—with headroom.
This is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix: YouTube and OBS document upload limits and connection symptoms, but do not specifically document every OBS-plus-FFmpeg setup. If FFmpeg is only processing locally and not sending data, it is not competing for upload bandwidth.
First confirm that FFmpeg is using the network
FFmpeg can be doing different jobs. It may be pushing a second live stream, uploading a file, or only processing media on your computer. Only a concurrent outbound transfer uses the same internet upload capacity as OBS.
- Second live stream: Its outgoing bitrate adds to OBS’s upload load.
- File upload: The upload competes while data is being sent; a large file does not necessarily use a constant rate.
- Local processing only: This does not consume internet upload bandwidth, though heavy CPU use can create a separate encoder-performance problem.
YouTube says the total bitrate being streamed cannot exceed the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. It also cautions that sharing a network can limit an individual connection. Applying that guidance to an OBS stream plus a concurrent FFmpeg transfer is a practical inference, not a published guarantee for this exact combination. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the bandwidth guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Run a controlled pause test
- Note the baseline. While OBS is live, check its dropped-frame status and connection indicator. Also inspect YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health messages and their timestamps; YouTube distinguishes moderate from critical errors. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
- Pause only FFmpeg’s outbound task briefly. Keep OBS’s scene, encoder, and network settings unchanged so you are comparing one change at a time.
- Watch for a change. If dropped frames stop rising or stream health improves, shared upload load is likely contributing. That result does not rule out other problems.
- Choose a sustainable arrangement. Resume FFmpeg only after reducing its transfer load or scheduling it for later; if both jobs must run, lower OBS’s bitrate or resolution and monitor again.
This pause-and-compare procedure is a diagnostic inference from the published bandwidth and monitoring guidance, not an official prescribed OBS/YouTube test.
Budget upload bandwidth for every sender
Use measured upload capacity, not the download figure. Account for OBS, FFmpeg, and other people or devices using the same connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused as headroom. Capacity can vary, so a speed-test result is not a guarantee that the connection will remain stable during a stream.

OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed for the OBS video bitrate when diagnosing dropped frames. Treat that as OBS’s troubleshooting rule of thumb, not a guarantee and not a combined formula for OBS plus FFmpeg. The guide also says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or an inability to keep up with the configured bitrate, and that too many can disconnect a stream. Read OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide (published September 30, 2024).
Lower the live stream’s demand when overlap is necessary
First consider pausing or scheduling the FFmpeg transfer. That frees upload capacity without changing the live stream. If both tasks must continue, reduce one source of load at a time and check stream health after each adjustment.

Choose a bitrate for the encoder and video mode
YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, its current table recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps using H.264, and 12 Mbps for the same video mode using AV1 or H.265. For 720p at 60 fps, the listed recommendations are 8 Mbps for H.264 and 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. These are recommended encoder bitrates for one stream—not a universal upload-speed requirement and not evidence that your connection can also sustain an upload. Allow for YouTube’s recommended headroom and other network traffic.
Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the applicable codec and mode before changing settings. YouTube advises considering a lower resolution if the connection cannot sustain the selected one.

Keep the other encoder settings compatible
YouTube’s guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, supported video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. If you change OBS output settings, check them against YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; changing bitrate alone does not correct every encoder or connection issue. You can also review YouTube’s instructions for encrypting a stream with RTMPS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate network trouble from encoder trouble
OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point to a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. YouTube recommends checking encoder output and CPU load when stream quality is poor in the encoder. If the encoder output looks healthy, YouTube advises testing the strength of the outbound internet connection; if the network test points outside the computer, contact your ISP. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide covers that distinction.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Dropped frames rise during the FFmpeg transfer: Pause or reschedule the transfer, or lower the total outbound load and retest.
- Encoder output or CPU load looks poor: Investigate encoding settings and system load rather than assuming upload contention is the only cause.
- OBS remains unstable with FFmpeg paused: Check the broader network path, including Wi-Fi, VPN or security software, network-prioritization tools, drivers, router, and ISP.
Check common causes if pausing FFmpeg does not help
- Unstable Wi-Fi: OBS recommends wired networking. An Ethernet cable may improve local-link stability, but it cannot increase the upload capacity provided by your ISP.
- VPN or security software: OBS lists these as possible sources of interference. Check their effect carefully, following your organization’s security rules.
- Network optimizer or prioritization software: OBS lists network-prioritization software among possible causes. Review whether it is limiting OBS or FFmpeg.
- Outdated network drivers: OBS includes outdated drivers among possible connection causes; check for appropriate updates for your hardware.
- Router or ISP problem: If the outbound connection remains weak or unstable after local checks, YouTube advises contacting your ISP.
These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of your particular setup. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide lists the relevant network checks.
Test before an important stream
YouTube recommends testing before the event with similar audio and motion, then monitoring stream health during the event. A representative test should include the FFmpeg job if you expect it to run alongside OBS. Check YouTube’s live streaming tips and watch the Live Control Room health messages as the test runs.

- No computer or home connection has to stay on for the stream.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; it streams as uploaded, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- The first day is free with no card, once per account.
