A blank Xbox screen does not automatically mean the HDMI port is broken. The fault may be the TV input, cable, receiver, capture device, display settings, or another video component. Test those possibilities first. If the connector is loose, pushed into the chassis, visibly bent, or detached from the circuit board, stop using the console and choose Microsoft service or a board-level repair specialist. HDMI-port replacement is a soldering repair—not a plug-in swap.
Which Xbox models does this guide cover?
The diagnostic steps apply broadly to Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, Xbox One X, and legacy Xbox 360 consoles. The repair steps do not. HDMI connectors, board layouts, disassembly procedures, and replacement parts differ by generation and revision.

Check the exact model, revision, serial information, and board layout before ordering a connector. iFixit’s Xbox port catalog lists separate parts for Xbox One, One S, One X, Series X, Series S, and Xbox 360. A connector that looks similar may not be electrically or mechanically compatible.

These symptoms narrow the possibilities but do not prove that the connector itself has failed. A visually perfect port can have cracked solder joints, lifted copper pads, damaged traces, failed protection components, or a faulty HDMI encoder or retimer.

First, rule out the TV, cable, and settings
- Select the correct TV input. Choose the exact HDMI socket used by the Xbox. Try another HDMI input on the television.
- Test the TV input with another device. This helps distinguish a display-side fault from an Xbox fault.
- Use a known-good HDMI cable. Inspect both plugs for bent contacts, contamination, or looseness. Do not repeatedly insert a questionable cable.
- Connect the Xbox directly to the display. Temporarily remove AV receivers, soundbars, HDMI switches, capture cards, splitters, extenders, and converters. Microsoft troubleshooting guidance recommends a direct Xbox-to-display connection because intermediary equipment can interfere with the signal. - Power-cycle the setup. Hold the Xbox power button for about 10 seconds to shut it down. Turn off the TV, unplug both devices briefly, reconnect the HDMI cable directly, select the TV input, and turn on the Xbox.
- Try another TV or monitor. If the Xbox works there, the original display, input, or compatibility settings are more likely responsible.
Reset the Xbox display output
If the console was configured for a resolution or refresh mode the display cannot show, start it in low-resolution mode. Turn the Xbox off completely by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
- Models with an eject button: hold Power + Eject until you hear the second startup sound, approximately 10 seconds later.
- Xbox Series S and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition: hold Power + Pair, because these models have no eject button.
The console should start in low-resolution mode, generally 640 × 480. Then open Profile & system → Settings → General → TV & display options and select a resolution supported by the display. Microsoft may change button combinations or menu labels in future firmware, so verify the current instructions on the official Xbox blank-screen support page if the sequence differs. Check HDMI OUT versus HDMI IN
Applicable Xbox One models have both HDMI OUT and HDMI IN. Connect the TV to HDMI OUT. HDMI IN was designed to pass another device through the Xbox and is not the normal output to the television.

Do not apply this distinction to consoles with only one HDMI connector, such as Series S and Series X. If you are unsure, read the label beside the socket rather than relying on its position.
Inspect the port safely
Turn off the Xbox, disconnect its power cable and accessories, and use a light to inspect the port. Do not insert a knife, pin, screwdriver, cotton swab, or other tool.

Look for:
- a connector housing bent or pushed into the chassis;
- a broken metal shield or cracked plastic tongue;
- bent, missing, or displaced internal contacts;
- debris or foreign material;
- a port that moves independently of the console shell;
- a plug that will not seat fully or no longer grips normally;
- cracks or lifted solder joints around the connector; and
- impact damage caused by transporting the console with a cable attached.
Do not push contacts back with a knife, spray liquid into the port, glue the connector in place, or heat it with a household heat gun or hair dryer. Repeatedly wiggling the cable can tear pads and traces from the board.
A clean-looking connector is not conclusive. Diagnosis may require board inspection, continuity testing, short testing, and examination under magnification.

Port replacement becomes reasonable when the connector is physically broken, mechanically loose, detached from its solder joints, or has damaged contacts and the rest of the video circuit is believed to be functional. A port that is torn from the board may also require copper-pad or trace repair.
No picture after every software and display test does not automatically justify replacing the connector. The actual fault may be an HDMI protection component, encoder, retimer, damaged differential-pair trace, or GPU-side video problem. A professional should diagnose those possibilities before installing a new port.
What HDMI-port replacement actually involves
The HDMI connector is soldered to the console’s circuit board. Replacement generally requires controlled hot-air or equivalent rework, soldering, flux, solder wick, magnification, and electrical testing. Microsoft describes its replacement components as intended for people with the knowledge and technical competence to perform complex electronic repairs and does not provide technical support for self-repair. Its Series S Model 1883 replacement-part page is not a beginner repair guide.

Equipment and capabilities
- the exact model-specific replacement connector;
- appropriate Torx drivers and plastic opening tools;
- ESD-safe work practices;
- a soldering iron and controlled hot-air rework station;
- flux, solder, solder wick, and suitable cleaning supplies;
- magnification and strong lighting;
- a multimeter;
- a stable board holder or fixture; and
- trace-repair or jumper-wire capability if pads are missing.
iFixit’s Series X and original Xbox One port kits state that soldering tools and skills are required. A screwdriver kit alone is not enough.
High-level repair workflow
- Identify the exact console model and revision.
- Back up important data and remove personal information if sending the console to another party.
- Disconnect power and accessories.
- Disassemble the console using the model-specific service procedure.
- Expose the relevant board or board assembly.
- Inspect the connector, mounting tabs, pads, traces, and nearby components.
- Remove the old port with controlled heat only after the solder is sufficiently molten.
- Clean the landing area and repair lifted pads or damaged traces if necessary.
- Align the replacement connector precisely, then solder the mounting tabs and signal pins.
- Inspect for bridges, incomplete joints, and mechanical movement under magnification.
- Check continuity and shorts before reassembly.
- Reassemble enough for a controlled display test.
- Test supported resolutions and, where applicable, 4K, HDR, and high-refresh-rate output.
- Complete reassembly only after the repair remains stable.
Common failures include excessive heat that delaminates the board, pulling up copper pads, tearing HDMI differential-pair traces, bridging adjacent pins, fitting a similar but incorrect connector, overheating nearby components, and failing to test for shorts. If pads or traces are missing, stop unless you already perform microsoldering and trace repair. Microsoft’s Series S service guide warns that a cracked PCB may make repair impossible.
Microsoft warranty and official service
Check warranty status before opening the console. Microsoft’s warranty and service-order page explains how to register a device, check coverage, and create a service order through a Microsoft account. Availability, fees, and service options vary by country.
Do not assume a damaged port receives free service merely because the console is under warranty. Accidental physical damage, liquid damage, misuse, and customer-caused damage may be treated differently. Microsoft may repair or replace the console rather than replace the connector.
Opening a console is not automatically the same as voiding every warranty. Microsoft’s Series S replacement-part information says self-repair with Microsoft components does not itself affect the limited hardware warranty, while damage caused during self-repair is not covered. The applicable warranty terms and local law control.

Before shipping the console, back up important data, remove confidential information where possible, and confirm how data is handled. Microsoft’s warranty documentation says a serviced or replaced product may receive the remainder of the original warranty or a stated post-service period, depending on the applicable terms and location.

Use an independent microsoldering specialist when the port is torn from the board, pads or traces are missing, the console still has no video after basic tests, or you do not have controlled hot-air equipment. A professional is also the safer choice when the console contains important saves or has high replacement value.
In the United States, uBreakiFix by Asurion advertises Xbox HDMI-port cleaning, cable inspection, repair, free diagnostics, possible same-day service, Xbox Authorized Service Provider status, and a one-year limited service warranty. These are service claims, not a guarantee that every location can repair every board or complete the work the same day.
Ask the shop:
- Is the diagnostic free, and is the quote for port replacement only or full board repair?
- Are OEM or aftermarket parts used?
- Are pad and trace repairs included?
- What happens if the connector is not the actual fault?
- What warranty covers the repair?
- Will the repaired console be tested at 4K, HDR, or 120 Hz where supported?
- Will replaced parts be returned?
- Will data be erased or preserved?
Repair or replace the Xbox?

Compare the repair quote with the console’s current value, storage and edition, warranty status, saved-data importance, likely extent of board damage, repair warranty, replacement availability, and the cost of a new or refurbished console. There is no universal repair price: location, model, parts, and trace damage can change the quote substantially.
Preventing future HDMI damage
- Disconnect the HDMI cable before transporting the console.
- Support the plug or remove it when moving the Xbox.
- Avoid sharp bends and sideways pressure on the cable.
- Keep the console stable so it cannot fall or pull against the connector.
- Disconnect by gripping the plug, not the cable.
- Keep the port free from dust and debris without inserting objects into it.
- Do not repeatedly wiggle the connector to restore a picture.
- Use strain relief only if it reduces movement without placing force on the port.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Xbox HDMI port be repaired without soldering?
A physically damaged connector normally requires board-level soldering. Cable, input, and display-setting faults can be fixed without soldering, but glue, force, and household heat are not safe substitutes for port repair.

Is a black screen proof that the HDMI port is broken?
No. Test the TV input, a known-good cable, a direct connection, another display, power cycling, and low-resolution startup before diagnosing the connector.
Can a repair shop fix ripped HDMI pads?
Often, a microsoldering specialist can rebuild damaged pads or traces with jumpers, but success depends on the extent of the damage and the condition of the circuit board.
What if a new HDMI port still gives no picture?
The original fault may involve damaged traces, protection components, an HDMI encoder or retimer, or another video-circuit fault. The console needs board-level diagnosis rather than another connector swap.

Repair is more attractive when the console is valuable, under warranty, contains important data, or has a repairable connector fault. Replacement may make more sense when the board is cracked, the quote approaches replacement value, or multiple faults are present.
