A PS3 can still connect to the internet, but the right fix depends on where its connection test first fails. Check your router and service on another device, then try Ethernet and run the PS3’s Test Internet Connection before changing DNS or router ports. If the console reaches the internet but cannot sign in to PlayStation Network (PSN), use a Device Setup Password instead of your normal account password.
Start with the fastest checks
- Confirm that a phone or computer can use the same router. If other devices also fail, troubleshoot the router or internet service first.
- Check PlayStation Status for an outage or maintenance affecting the service you are trying to use.
- Restart the PS3. If you are seeing a server or connection error, turn off the modem and router, leave them off for at least five minutes, then restart them. Sony recommends this for error 8002A537.
- Check the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password, and temporarily remove variables such as a proxy, extender, guest network, or router feature you do not recognize.
- Move the console closer to the router for a wireless test, or connect it by Ethernet. Then recreate or check the connection and run the test again.
For a connection or server error, Sony also recommends testing another device on the same network and checking the exact code rather than applying a generic fix. See Sony’s guidance for 80710016 and 8002A537.
Read the PS3 connection test in order
On the XMB, select Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Test (label wording can vary by language or firmware). The test commonly reports whether the PS3 obtained an IP address, reached the internet, signed in to PSN, detected UPnP, and what NAT type and connection speeds it measured. Treat the first failed result as the main clue; later results may be unavailable simply because an earlier step failed.
| First failed result | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Obtain IP Address | Wi-Fi password or compatibility, Ethernet cable and router port, router DHCP, access controls, or console networking hardware. |
| Internet Connection | Router or modem, gateway, DNS, or internet service. Confirm another device works on the same network. |
| PlayStation Network Sign-In | PSN status, account authentication, and the PS3 Device Setup Password. A PSN failure does not by itself mean the console is disconnected from the internet. |
| UPnP | The router’s UPnP setting or NAT configuration. A failed UPnP result alone does not prove basic internet access is broken. |
| NAT Type 3 | A restrictive router/NAT configuration that may affect matchmaking, voice chat, or hosting. It does not prove that every online feature will fail. |
| Low or unstable speed | Internet service, wireless signal or interference, router placement, and the PS3’s own networking limits. |
The console test helps locate a problem; it does not establish that a particular game’s servers are still running. Check the game publisher’s current support information if PSN works but just one title does not.

Try Ethernet first to separate Wi-Fi problems
A wired test bypasses wireless signal and compatibility issues, making it the most useful way to isolate a connection fault.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the PS3’s LAN port to a numbered LAN port on the router.
- On the XMB, open Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings.
- Select Easy, save the settings, and select Test Internet Connection.
Sony’s PS3 quick-start guide documents this setup path. If Ethernet fails, swap in a known-good cable and router LAN port before buying anything; check for a link light and test the cable with another device if possible. Restart the router with the PS3 connected. If other devices work but the PS3 cannot obtain an address, check router access controls, MAC filtering, and device limits.
Set up Wi-Fi and check legacy compatibility
- Open Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings.
- Select Easy > Wireless > Scan.
- Choose the correct access point, confirm its SSID, select the offered encryption-key type, and enter the Wi-Fi password.
- Save the settings and run Test Internet Connection.
Sony’s PS3-specific troubleshooting for 80710016 calls out 802.11b/g compatibility and correct wireless credentials. For diagnosis, offer the console a separate 2.4-GHz SSID rather than a combined band-steering network, and avoid a WPA3-only configuration. If the router has a legacy or compatibility mode, try it temporarily. The security options supported depend on the console model and router configuration; do not assume every PS3 accepts every WPA or WPA2 mode.

A hidden SSID, unusual network name or password, or guest network can add avoidable complications during setup. Test with a visible, conventional SSID and password using ordinary letters and numbers, and use the main network rather than guest Wi-Fi initially. Do not leave WEP enabled as a permanent fix: it weakens wireless security. If only a weak legacy mode works, prefer Ethernet or a separate compatible access point configured as safely as the hardware permits.
A phone hotspot can be a diagnostic comparison if it offers a compatible security mode and your carrier permits it. It is not a dependable permanent gaming connection: data limits, latency, carrier NAT, and hotspot compatibility can all interfere.
Fix the failure that matches your test
IP address fails
For Wi-Fi, re-enter the password and check that the PS3 can see and select the intended SSID. For Ethernet, try another cable and LAN port. Keep IP settings on automatic unless you have a specific network configuration to enter. If another device connects but the PS3 still cannot obtain an address over a known-good wired connection, investigate router DHCP and access controls before suspecting console hardware.

Internet connection fails after an IP address is obtained
Confirm that the router has internet access and that no proxy is set unintentionally. DNS can be a diagnostic experiment only when the PS3 has an IP address, other devices work, and the failure appears related to name resolution. Try a known DNS service only if you can restore DNS to Automatic; no public DNS provider is guaranteed to be faster or more reliable in every location. DNS will not repair a bad cable, failed DHCP, incompatible Wi-Fi, an ISP outage, or a discontinued game server.
PSN sign-in fails but internet works
Check the live status page, then verify account authentication. For PS3 sign-in, generate and use a Device Setup Password as described below. If the same account cannot sign in elsewhere, the issue may be account-related rather than a PS3 network setting.
UPnP fails, NAT is Type 3, or only multiplayer features fail
If the router offers UPnP, enable it, restart the router and PS3, and test the game or feature again. A restrictive NAT can affect matchmaking, voice communication, or hosting while leaving general internet access intact. Consider manual port forwarding only when the specific game or service documents the ports it needs. Do not put the PS3 in a DMZ as a first step or expose services unnecessarily.

Speed is low or play disconnects
Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi, move the console nearer the access point, and reduce interference or obstacles. A good result close to the router does not establish that the console’s usual location has adequate signal. The PS3’s test speed is not a guarantee of game performance; service conditions and the game’s own servers also matter.
Keep custom settings simple
Return to Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings and choose Custom only when you have a specific reason to change a value. Sony’s current general connection guide explains these concepts but is written for newer consoles, not as a PS3 menu guide: PlayStation internet connection guidance.
- IP Address Setting: Automatic/DHCP is appropriate for most home networks.
- DHCP Host Name: Usually leave this unspecified unless your network administrator requires it.
- DNS: Use Automatic first. Manual DNS is an experiment, not a universal speed fix.
- MTU: Leave Automatic; do not copy arbitrary values from forum posts.
- Proxy Server: Choose Do Not Use on a typical home network unless you intentionally configured a proxy. A school, workplace, or hotel network may require one.
- UPnP and NAT: These concern how the router handles connections for some online features; neither is a substitute for basic IP and internet connectivity.
To turn off an unintended proxy, select Custom, continue through the existing settings, choose Do Not Use at Proxy Server, save, and test. Sony specifically includes disabling proxy use in its 80710016 troubleshooting guidance.

Try these PS3-specific fixes
Disable Media Server Connection temporarily
Go to Settings > Network Settings > Media Server Connection > Disable, then test the internet connection again. Sony lists this as a possible fix for 80710016. The change is reversible and affects media-server discovery, not ordinary Ethernet or Wi-Fi access. Source: Sony’s 80710016 page.
Install the latest system software offered by Sony
If the console can connect, use Settings > System Update > Update via Internet. Sony also provides a computer-update route on its PS3 support page. Follow Sony’s current instructions for any offline update; do not guess USB folder names or file details.
Check the router before replacing it
A newer router is not automatically a solution: it may still lack a suitable 2.4-GHz network mode, or the issue may instead be account authentication, signal, DHCP, or service availability. If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not, consider a compatible access point or another safe way to provide a legacy-compatible 2.4-GHz network. If a cable run is impractical, an extender or Ethernet-over-power adapter may help signal or placement, but neither fixes an incompatible security mode or a failed console adapter.
Sign in to PSN with a Device Setup Password
Sony requires a Device Setup Password for PS3 sign-in. It is different from your normal PlayStation account password; do not disable account security to make the older console work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- On a phone or computer, open Sony’s PS3 and PS Vita Device Setup Password instructions and sign in to Account Management.
- Open the account security settings and select Generate New Password.
- Record the generated password securely.
- On the PS3, enter your account sign-in ID/email address and the Device Setup Password in place of the normal password. You can enable automatic sign-in if desired.
You can revoke a generated device password and replace it through Account Management. If the console connects to the internet but sign-in still fails, check the status page and account access rather than repeating Wi-Fi setup.
Look up the exact error code
| Code | What Sony says and what to try |
|---|---|
| 80710016 | Sony describes a connection error. Check another wireless device, confirm 802.11b/g compatibility and credentials, disable an unneeded proxy and Media Server Connection, and ensure router firmware and drivers are current. See Sony’s 80710016 guidance. |
| 8002A537 | Sony describes an error connecting to the server. Check PlayStation Status, sign out and back in, try signing in on another device, and power off the modem and router for at least five minutes before restarting them. If the problem is temporary, try again later. See Sony’s 8002A537 guidance. |
These steps are specific to the cited codes, not a universal cure for every PS3 error. Search the PlayStation error-code index for the exact message or code; do not assume that a code beginning with “8002” calls for DNS changes or port forwarding.
Quick Recap
When the connection is not the real problem
- PSN outage or maintenance: Wait and check PlayStation Status again before changing router settings.
- One game fails: PSN access does not guarantee that an individual game’s servers remain online. Check the game publisher’s current support information.
- Hotel, dormitory, or public Wi-Fi: Captive portals, device registration, client isolation, and required proxies can prevent a PS3 from connecting. Ask the network administrator for a wired connection or approved device registration. Use a personal router only if the network allows it.
- IPv6-only service: Do not assume the PS3 can operate on an IPv6-only network. Confirm compatibility with your router or ISP; Sony’s current general connectivity guidance about IPv6 is aimed at newer consoles, not a definitive PS3 specification.
- PlayStation Store availability: Sony’s notice says the PS3 Store is planned to close in July 2027 in the relevant region. Check the notice for your region and current implementation details. Previously purchased content and individual game features remain subject to their own availability; the notice is not evidence that every game server remains online. See Sony’s important notices.
- Possible hardware failure: Suspect the console only after testing both Ethernet and Wi-Fi on a known-good network. An empty Wi-Fi network list when other devices see the network, no Ethernet link across multiple known-good cables and ports, or repeated network freezes may warrant professional diagnosis. Back up important data before repair; do not open the console just to troubleshoot connectivity.
Use this final decision path
- Ethernet works, Wi-Fi does not: Focus on 2.4-GHz compatibility, SSID/security settings, signal, and router behavior.
- Neither Ethernet nor Wi-Fi obtains an IP address: Check router DHCP, access restrictions, and known-good cables/ports before considering hardware.
- Internet works but PSN sign-in fails: Check service status, account access, and the Device Setup Password.
- PSN works but one game does not: Check that title’s server availability and support.
- No known-good network can see or link to the console: Consider professional hardware diagnosis after the network-side checks above.
