This is separate from the material Xbox officially presented in 2024. The official trailer documented the team’s intended design, not a finished game, and the surfaced footage should not be treated as proof of the project’s final state.
Is the new Perfect Dark game canceled?
Yes. Microsoft ended work on the reboot and closed its developer, The Initiative, in July 2025, according to Windows Central’s report. The footage report concerns that canceled project; it does not indicate that a new game is in development or that a playable retail version exists.

What was Perfect Dark supposed to be?
The 2020 announcement
Xbox announced Perfect Dark on December 10, 2020, as the first game from The Initiative. Xbox described its aim as a near-future secret-agent thriller reimagining the established gaming property. The 2024 gameplay presentation
In a feature published June 9, 2024, Xbox described the reboot as a single-player game built around mission choices, traversal, gadgets, stealth, melee and gunplay. Its planned setting was a near-future Cairo affected by ecological catastrophe, where corporations were involved in restoration efforts. Those details represent the developers’ public vision at the time; they do not show how much of the game was complete when Microsoft canceled it. Was a new publisher going to save the game?
Windows Central reported on September 2, 2025, that Xbox and Embracer explored a possible post-cancellation arrangement and that a prospective deal involving Take-Two reportedly fell apart over long-term ownership of the intellectual property.
