To save Hans Capon in “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” get Fever Tonic to Captain Thomas at the top of the Maiden Tower before the twelfth bell. The most straightforward route is to complete castle jobs, earn access to the towers, learn and brew the tonic in the Crone Tower, then give it to Adela for Thomas. This is the sixth main quest, and missing the deadline ends the sequence in a game over.
Before you start: the deadline and objective
After “Wedding Crashers,” Henry is imprisoned at Trosky Castle while Hans remains in danger of execution for poaching. Henry is allowed out to work; the immediate goal is to reach the feverish Captain Thomas and help him recover so he can vouch for Hans. Walkthroughs describe a twelve-bell limit. Keep moving through objectives rather than exploring or taking optional detours.
The walkthrough below follows the job-and-permission route described by PowerPyx and Game Checklists. Objective wording and details can vary, so use the active quest marker if it differs from a guide.
How to get through the castle and reach the towers
1. Carry the charcoal and do the blacksmith’s job
Move the charcoal sacks from the cart to the shed as directed, then speak with the blacksmith and complete the horseshoe task. These early jobs advance access toward the inner bailey. Game Checklists specifies three sacks; other walkthroughs describe the task less precisely, so follow the in-game objective if the count differs.

2. Find a way to obtain lockpicks or access
Lockpicks can help with chests, but they are not the only route described by the guides. PowerPyx and Game Checklists report that Kabat can provide lockpicks after Henry returns the rosary or die obtained from Father Nicodemus. Depending on the circumstances, guides also describe access errands, a dice game, pickpocketing, or stealth. Availability can depend on your progress and choices.
3. Speak to Chamberlain Ulrich
Find Ulrich in the noble kitchen. Game Checklists says Henry can address Ulrich’s stomach pain with a Survival, Scholarship, or Speech check, then obtain access to the Crone Tower to prepare a remedy. GamesRadar also describes speaking with Ulrich before going to the tower. If a check fails, Game Checklists reports that sneaking into the tower remains an option.

How to make Fever Tonic
In the Crone Tower alchemy room, locate and read the Physician’s Journal to learn the Fever Tonic recipe. Game Checklists gives these brewing steps; GamesRadar corroborates the journal and ingredients:

- Pour wine into the cauldron.
- Add three handfuls of Feverfew and boil for two turns.
- Grind Elderberry leaves, then add them to the cauldron.
- Add two handfuls of Ginger.
- Distill the mixture into a phial.
Game Checklists’ route calls for two bottles: give one to Ulrich to open access to the Maiden Tower, and keep one for Thomas. Make both before leaving the alchemy room so you do not have to retrace your route under the bell deadline.

How to reach Thomas and save Hans
Go to the Maiden Tower and climb toward its highest level. Guards and restricted access can make this part difficult; use permission you have earned, or rely on stealth and distractions if needed. Take the Fever Tonic to Adela and give it to her for Thomas. Once Thomas recovers, he can interrupt the execution and save Hans.
Optional well route
GamesRadar describes a shortcut through a well, but warns that it can injure Henry. It is an optional, risky alternative—not necessary for the job-and-access route. Avoid it if you want to minimize injury risk or are uncertain about the drop.

Which route should you use?

The guides do not establish one universally fastest route. If you have few lockpicks, the reported alternatives include returning Kabat’s rosary or die, completing access errands, or using stealth; none is guaranteed to be available in every save.
