Forget Star Wars Movies? Why the Franchise’s Future Belongs to Video Games

Star Wars games can expand the franchise through player agency and genre variety, from Clone Wars tactics to Old Republic role-playing. Their rise does not mean films are over.

Star Wars games are becoming one of the franchise’s most flexible storytelling channels—not because films are finished, but because games can put players inside stories that films cannot tell in the same way. The upcoming slate spans turn-based tactics, racing and role-playing, alongside established single-player adventures. That breadth makes a strong case for games shaping Star Wars’ future, though the available evidence does not show they have overtaken films in audience, revenue or strategic importance.

What “the future belongs to games” really means

It means games have room to expand how Star Wars stories are told: players can make decisions, engage with the world directly and experience the galaxy through very different kinds of play. Lucasfilm Games says it creates “interactive and immersive experiences that help extend the narrative of the Star Wars galaxy for fans around the world.” That is Lucasfilm’s description of its purpose, not evidence that games now outperform films or have displaced them.

The distinction matters. A film delivers a fixed, authored story to an audience; a game can make the player’s actions part of the experience. Neither form is inherently better. Games’ distinctive opportunity is to add agency and genre variety to a franchise whose theatrical stories continue alongside them.

Star Wars games are not limited to one kind of story

Lucasfilm’s official games portfolio illustrates how different the interactive slate can be. The descriptions below reflect the projects’ announced formats; a project’s listing does not by itself establish its current release status.

Game Announced or described format What it adds
Jedi: Survivor Third-person, narrative-driven single-player action-adventure A focused character-led adventure built around direct control of its protagonist.
Star Wars: Zero Company Single-player, turn-based tactics A squad-focused approach to the twilight of the Clone Wars.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer Racing A competition-centered take on the galaxy rather than a conventional story adventure.
Star Wars: Eclipse Branching action-adventure A format that foregrounds branching story possibilities.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Single-player, narrative-driven action RPG A role-playing project set in the Old Republic era, with player agency among its stated creative aims.

These examples show range, not proof of commercial success. A portfolio that moves from tactical decisions to racing and role-playing gives Lucasfilm ways to explore different corners of the franchise without asking every project to function like a film.

Two announced projects show how different the next wave could be

Zero Company turns the Clone Wars into a tactics setting

StarWars.com announced Star Wars: Zero Company as a single-player tactics game set in the twilight of the Clone Wars, developed by Bit Reactor with Respawn Entertainment and Lucasfilm Games. The announcement named PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and gave a 2026 release window. That window is announcement-era information, not a guarantee of current availability; check the official announcement for the project details and any later status update.

Fate of the Old Republic is not a KOTOR sequel

Lucasfilm announced Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic as a new single-player action RPG from Arcanaut Studios, made in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games and directed by Casey Hudson. Hudson described the intended experience as “emotionally powerful, cinematic adventures driven by player agency, narrative depth, and immersive world-building.” That is a creative ambition, not a measured outcome. Lucasfilm’s interview also makes clear that the game is not a direct sequel or continuation of Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR). Douglas Reilly, Lucasfilm Games’ vice president and general manager, said of the storytelling possibilities in the distant past: “There are, quite literally, infinite stories to tell.” Read the announcement and interview for the project’s stated direction.

Games and films are developing alongside each other

The evidence points to coexistence, not replacement. Lucasfilm’s productions page lists The Mandalorian and Grogu among its 2026 productions, while the Associated Press reported that Star Wars: Starfighter was announced for a theatrical release in May 2027. Those are dated snapshots, and release plans can change; consult the Lucasfilm productions page and the Associated Press report for the cited film information.

LEGO Star Wars Skywalker Saga for Nintendo Switch

  • Play through all nine films in a new, fun filled adventure

The practical difference is what each medium can do. Films remain theatrical features with a fixed running time and authored sequence. Games can ask players to plan a battle, race, explore or make choices within a role-playing story. A broader game slate can extend the franchise’s storytelling options while new films continue to be made.

What the evidence can—and cannot—prove

Official Lucasfilm and StarWars.com material establishes the stated purpose, announced formats and creative intentions of the games discussed here. It does not establish that Star Wars games now exceed films in revenue, audience, cultural reach or investment. No directly comparable Star Wars-specific statistic in these sources supports that stronger claim. Game variety and a visible slate are reasons to take the medium seriously, not substitutes for matched performance data.

Star Wars Battlefront II - PlayStation 4
  • A new hero, a story untold in an emotionally gripping new Star Wars campaign that spans over 30 years
  • The ultimate battleground
  • Galactic scale space combat: Space combat has been designed for Star Wars Battlefront II from the ground up with distinct handling, weapons and customization options
  • Battery: No battery used

So the most defensible version of the headline is also the more useful one: video games may be where Star Wars can experiment most freely with player agency and genre, while film remains an active part of the franchise. The future is not exclusive to either medium.
