For beginners, hand forging is best learned as a safety-first progression: understand the hazards, obtain a small set of suitable tools and protective equipment, practice controlled hammering, then advance through tapering, bending, punching, drifting, forging to dimension, heat-treating tools, forge-welding and making tenons. This guide covers that learning path without pretending that one forge, fuel, temperature or tong size fits every workshop.

What this guide covers

This is an introduction to hand forging at an anvil. It is not a specification for industrial forging machinery, a welding tutorial, or a substitute for instruction on a particular fuel, alloy or workshop layout. Equipment and legal requirements vary by operation and location.

Put safety before technique

Blacksmithing combines hot metal, impact, flying particles, sharp edges, noise and potentially hazardous fuels or fumes. ABANA’s beginner curriculum starts with safety, and its safety policy addresses forging, forge welding, hammering, punching, grinding and related shop work.

Protect your eyes and face

  • Wear impact-rated safety glasses appropriate to the hazard.
  • If you add a face shield, wear the safety glasses underneath it; ABANA’s policy specifically says a face shield does not replace them.
  • Use additional protection when grinding or when the operation can throw scale or fragments.

OSHA’s eye-and-face protection rule addresses workplace exposure to flying objects and calls for side protection where that hazard exists. It is a workplace rule, not a complete set of requirements for every home workshop or jurisdiction.

Protect your hearing

Hammering at an anvil can create damaging noise. ABANA recommends hearing protection whenever work at the anvil is in progress. Earplugs or earmuffs are the relevant equipment categories; choose protection that fits correctly and does not interfere with safe awareness of the shop.

Control hot work and the work area

  • Keep combustible materials away from hot work and from areas where sparks or scale can travel.
  • Plan where hot stock will be placed before heating it.
  • Keep floors, walkways and the area around the anvil clear so you can move without tripping while carrying hot metal.
  • Learn the emergency procedures for your specific forge, fuel and building before lighting or operating it.

Starter tools: categories, not a shopping list

You can begin with a modest set of hand-forging equipment, but the correct model, dimensions and materials depend on the stock, tasks and workspace. The sources do not establish a universal starter specification or reliable consumer prices.

Category Purpose What to decide before buying
Blacksmithing hammer Delivers controlled blows for drawing, bending and shaping hot stock. Choose a hammer suited to your strength, the work and your instruction; balance and safe handling matter more than a nominal product label.
Anvil or suitable anvil-like work surface Provides a stable surface and edges for shaping. Assess stability, working area and how the surface fits the planned projects.
Blacksmithing tongs Hold and manipulate heated stock. Select a grip that securely matches the stock and task. OSHA’s cited tong guidance concerns industrial forging machines and does not establish one universal home-shop length.
Eye protection Protects against scale and flying particles. Match impact protection and side protection to the hazard; add a face shield when appropriate, while still wearing safety glasses.
Hearing protection Reduces exposure to anvil and shop noise. Use earplugs or earmuffs that fit and remain compatible with safe communication and awareness.

Other items may become necessary as your work expands, especially for cutting, punching, grinding or finishing. Add tools when a specific operation and its hazards are understood rather than buying a large kit before you know what you will make.

Choose a forge without guessing at specifications

Forge choice depends on fuel, available space, ventilation, local rules, the metals you intend to heat and how often you will work. Reliable specifications for forge types, fuel consumption, operating temperatures, ventilation measurements and prices are not established here, so a responsible choice requires equipment-specific documentation and, where appropriate, qualified local advice.

Questions to answer first

  • What fuel or power source does the forge use, and what handling, storage and emergency procedures does it require?
  • Can the location provide ventilation appropriate to that equipment and building?
  • What stock sizes and alloys will you work with?
  • Is the forge designed for the intended operation, and are manufacturer instructions available?
  • What instruction or supervision is available while you learn?

Do not use a color chart, a claimed maximum temperature or a generic ventilation number as a substitute for instructions specific to the forge, fuel and material.

  1. Learn safe shop habits. Understand PPE, hot-work procedures, tool condition, movement around the work area and how to stop safely.
  2. Practice controlled hammering. Learn to strike deliberately, maintain a stable grip and stance, and keep the work supported on the anvil.
  3. Forge tapers. Draw material down while learning how hammer placement changes the shape.
  4. Bend hot stock. Control the bend with the anvil, tools and sequence of blows rather than forcing cold metal.
  5. Forge and heat-treat hand tools. This combines shaping with the need to understand the particular alloy and a documented procedure.
  6. Punch and drift holes. Develop alignment, support and tool-control skills while managing hot scale and changing dimensions.
  7. Use basic blacksmithing math and forge to dimension. Plan allowances for shaping and check work against the intended dimensions.
  8. Advance to forge-welding and tenons. Attempt these only after supervised practice and a clear understanding of the specific process, materials and safety controls.

This sequence is a framework, not a promise that a fixed number of days will produce competence. Progress depends on instruction, practice quality, material and the equipment available.

Heat, alloys and heat treatment require specific guidance

Forge heat, quenching and tempering cannot be prescribed safely as one generic schedule. The correct procedure depends on the alloy, section size, intended properties, equipment and the exact operation. Before heat-treating a tool, obtain a procedure from a trustworthy source for that material and follow the equipment and safety guidance that accompanies it.

  • Identify the alloy before selecting a heat-treatment method.
  • Use the documented temperatures, soak times, quench medium and tempering steps for that alloy and geometry.
  • Do not infer a temperature from a color seen under different lighting or from an unrelated material.
  • Keep hot-work and quench hazards in the risk assessment; steam, splatter, fumes and fire can accompany these operations.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Starting with advanced projects: Begin with controlled tapers and bends before punching, welding or complex tool making.
  • Skipping PPE because the task seems small: Scale and fragments can be produced by ordinary hammering and grinding.
  • Buying by a generic size claim: Tool suitability depends on the stock, task, user and setup.
  • Treating industrial guidance as a home-shop specification: OSHA’s forging-machine and eye-protection rules have defined workplace scopes.
  • Guessing heat treatment: A procedure for one alloy is not evidence for another.
  • Practicing without feedback: Structured instruction helps identify unsafe hammering, poor support and incorrect tool use before they become habits.

How to turn this into a practical first project

Pick a simple project that uses one or two beginner skills, such as a basic taper or bend. Prepare the work area and PPE, rehearse where the hot stock and tools will go, and set a stopping point before you begin. After each heat, inspect the shape, tool control and work area rather than chasing a finished object at any cost. Move to punching, drifting, heat-treated tools, forge-welding and tenons only when your basic handling is consistent and you have suitable instruction.

Where to get reliable instruction
