Former Yale football coach Tony Reno died at 52, Yale announced on October 2, 2026. He led the Bulldogs for 14 seasons, winning five Ivy League championships and 83 games—the second-most victories by a head coach in Yale football history. The Associated Press reported that no cause of death was given.
Who was Tony Reno?
Reno was Yale’s head football coach from January 2012 until he stepped down in February 2026. Before taking the top job, he spent more than a decade on the Yale coaching staff under Jack Siedlecki and was part of the program when it won the 2006 Ivy League championship. Yale’s coach biography records his appointment and coaching history.
How many Ivy League titles did Tony Reno win?
Yale credits Reno with five Ivy League championships, in 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2025. He finished with 83 wins across 14 seasons, second-most among Yale head coaches. Yale also named him Ivy League Coach of the Year in 2022. These career figures are from Yale’s October 2, 2026 memorial.
A landmark final season
Yale says the 2025 team won the Ivy title and earned the conference’s first automatic berth in the NCAA FCS playoffs. The Bulldogs beat Youngstown State 43–42 in the second round and finished ranked No. 13 nationally, according to the university’s memorial.

Kevin Cahill, Joel E. Smilow ’54 Head Coach of Football, remembered Reno’s priorities: “Tony was a man who valued the important things in life. Family always came first, and that was evident in the special family he built and the love the Reno family shares.”
