Fortnite’s Android beta recorded 15 million downloads in the first 21 days after release in 2018, while Epic reported 23 million Android players over the same period. The download figure counts installations—not 15 million unique players—and came during a staged launch that began with Samsung Galaxy devices.
What the 15 million figure measured
Epic’s 2018 milestone was 15 million Android downloads, described by contemporary reports as APK installs, alongside 23 million Android players after 21 days. Ars Technica and TechCrunch attributed the figures to Epic. Those are separate measures: downloads count installations, while the player figure counts people who played; neither should be substituted for the other. Ars Technica and TechCrunch reported the milestone in 2018.
Why the Android rollout was limited
Epic announced Fortnite Battle Royale for mobile on March 8, 2018, saying Android support would follow in the coming months. On August 9, it announced the Android beta: Samsung Galaxy devices were invited first, and access for other devices would roll out in waves. The announcement named supported Samsung devices and eligible models from other manufacturers; it did not describe an immediate release for every Android phone. Epic’s March 2018 mobile announcement and its August 9 Android beta announcement document the launch timeline and rollout.
Epic said, “Players with Samsung Galaxy devices are the first to be invited starting today,” and described expanding access as it worked on supporting a wider variety of devices. The concrete constraints were staged invitations and a defined set of supported devices; the available evidence does not establish one technical reason that explains every device exclusion.

What the compatibility statistic does—and doesn’t—say
Ars Technica reported Epic’s claim that 92 percent of Fortnite’s Android players were running Android 8 or newer. That percentage describes Fortnite players, not the share of all Android devices that could run the game. It should not be read as proof that 92 percent of Android phones were compatible.
