Fortnite is back on Apple’s App Store in most of the world, but the return has not ended Epic Games’ fight with Apple. Epic says the game returned to the App Store on May 19, 2026, everywhere except Australia. The 2024 comeback that made headlines was narrower: European Union players could install Fortnite through Epic’s own iPhone store, a route made possible by the EU’s Digital Markets Act. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney remained dissatisfied because, in Epic’s view, Apple allowed alternatives while retaining too much control over their installation, payments and costs.
That distinction matters. “Back on iPhone” can mean an App Store download, an alternative marketplace, or cloud streaming; each has different regional availability and trade-offs. Fortnite’s return is a practical win for players, but the broader argument over who controls app distribution and digital payments on iOS remains unresolved.
What changed: from an EU workaround to a wider App Store return
On August 16, 2024, Fortnite returned to iPhone in the European Union through the newly launched Epic Games Store Mobile. Epic also launched that mobile store on Android worldwide, with Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe and Fall Guys among its games. The iPhone release was not a reinstatement by Apple: it was an alternative distribution route opened by the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which requires Apple to permit competing marketplaces in the EU.
Epic’s May 19, 2026 announcement changed the practical picture again: the company said Fortnite had returned to Apple’s App Store around the world, with Australia the exception. Epic’s current iOS and iPadOS installation guidance lists the App Store as an option and also identifies regional alternatives. So the August 2024 story is now a snapshot of the first EU route back, not a complete guide to where the game can be downloaded today.

Epic’s words “around the world” should be read with that Australia exception, and with the usual caveat that store and streaming availability can vary by country. A return through Apple’s App Store is also different from a return through a competing store: it gives players a familiar download route without resolving Epic’s objections to Apple’s platform rules.
Why was Fortnite removed from iPhone?
The conflict escalated in August 2020, when Epic added a direct-payment option to Fortnite that bypassed Apple’s in-app-purchase system. Apple removed the game from the App Store for violating its rules. Epic sued Apple and launched its “Nineteen Eighty-Fortnite” campaign, framing the dispute as a challenge to Apple’s control of iPhone software distribution and payments.
Epic argued that developers should be able to distribute apps and take payments outside Apple’s systems, and that competition could give developers and customers better terms. Apple’s position has centered on its control of the iOS marketplace and the security and privacy rationale for its rules. Terms such as “Apple tax,” “walled garden” and “malicious compliance” are Epic’s advocacy language, not neutral legal findings. Fees and rules can vary by region, transaction and program; it is not accurate to treat one commission rate as universal.

Why Sweeney was still miffed in 2024
Epic did not regard the EU launch as proof that iPhone had become an open platform. It saw it as a regulated exception in which Apple still shaped the terms of competition. The objections fell into four related areas:
- Distribution control: Epic wants developers to be able to reach iPhone users through marketplaces other than Apple’s. In 2024, that route applied in the EU, not globally.
- Payments and fees: Epic argues that developers should be able to use competing payment systems and that Apple’s terms can blunt the commercial benefit of alternative distribution. Allowing another store does not by itself mean that Apple takes no fee or that a rival store faces identical terms.
- Installation friction: Epic said Apple’s warnings, approval prompts and installation requirements made rival marketplaces harder to use. Apple defended security steps as necessary. The two sides also disagreed over how many steps the process involved, so reported step counts should be understood as competing claims, not a timeless measurement.
- Meaningful competition: Epic’s larger complaint was that formal permission to operate an alternative marketplace is not enough if the incumbent still determines the practical and economic conditions under which that competitor reaches users.
That is why Fortnite’s reappearance did not settle Sweeney’s complaint. In Epic’s view, the question was not only whether the game could be installed, but whether iOS developers could compete on distribution and payment terms in a way that mattered.
The legal fight is not a simple win-or-lose story
The U.S. case produced a mixed result. In 2021, a federal district court did not accept every part of Epic’s case or declare Apple an illegal monopolist on all the issues Epic raised. It did issue an injunction addressing Apple’s anti-steering rules, allowing developers to direct users toward external payment options. The later dispute over how Apple implemented that injunction became a significant part of the continuing litigation.

In 2025, a federal judge found Apple had violated the injunction and ordered changes affecting external payment links and related restrictions. Apple continued to challenge aspects of the rulings, while Epic argued that Apple’s approach remained unlawful. The supplied reporting and company materials describe further appellate and Supreme Court-related proceedings by 2026, with commissions and the scope of external-payment options still in contention; they do not establish a final Supreme Court resolution. It would therefore be wrong to say the Supreme Court has definitively settled the dispute.

The EU’s Digital Markets Act created the alternative-marketplace route used in 2024. Epic’s current account of the Australian dispute says it has not returned Fortnite to the Australian App Store because it considers Apple’s payment terms unlawful and is awaiting a court decision or lawful interim arrangement. Those are Epic’s characterizations; they should not be mistaken for a single worldwide judgment about Apple’s conduct.

Availability can depend on territory, account region, device and the service’s current rules. The Epic support page is the best place to check before changing an account region or relying on an installation path. Epic also warns that it does not generally support third-party software for installing Fortnite; do not treat random installer sites as equivalent to the named official routes. Install from the App Store
- Open Apple’s App Store and search for Fortnite.
- Check that the developer shown is Epic Games Inc.
- Tap Get, install the game and launch it.
- Sign in with an Epic Games account if you want to access the account’s cross-platform progression, purchases, friends or inventory.
For the alternative Epic Games Store route, use Epic’s current regional installation instructions, complete Apple’s security and authorization prompts, then open the Epic store and select Fortnite. In the EU, Epic also lists AltStore PAL: users can install that marketplace using its official instructions, find Fortnite there and tap Free to start installation. Prompts and exact steps can change with iOS versions and regional rules.
Australia and cloud streaming
Australia is the notable App Store exception in Epic’s current account. The company’s return announcement and Australian campaign page describe its position in the continuing local dispute. For players unable to install a local app, Epic points to cloud options including GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna and Xbox Cloud Gaming, subject to each service’s territory and requirements. Streaming avoids a local App Store download, but requires a reliable connection and can bring latency, queues, image-quality variation or other service limits. It is not identical to running the native app.

Supported Apple devices and iOS version
The U.S. App Store listing specifies iOS 17.0 or later and currently lists these supported devices:
- iPhone 11 and newer;
- iPhone XS and newer;
- iPhone 12 mini and newer;
- iPhone SE (third generation) and newer;
- iPad Pro 10.5-inch and newer;
- iPad Air (fourth generation) and newer;
- iPad (tenth generation) and newer; and
- iPad mini (sixth generation) and newer.
The listing includes overlapping device categories. Check the live listing for the specific model and software version rather than relying on an old compatibility guide: Apple or Epic may revise requirements. A relatively recent device can still be ineligible if its operating system is too old.
What the return means for players and developers
For players in supported regions, the App Store route is the simplest way to get Fortnite back: it uses a familiar installation flow and Apple’s ordinary app-management system. It is also the broadest currently listed route. The Epic Games Store and AltStore PAL matter for users who want an alternative marketplace, and for the larger question of whether those stores can become viable competitors. They involve an additional marketplace choice and a more involved installation process, with potentially different update, refund, parental-control and support experiences.

For developers, the issue is whether alternative distribution and payment options can attract enough users and software to make a practical competitive difference. Permission on paper is not the same as a marketplace with meaningful reach. For Apple, security and user trust are central arguments for control and review; for Epic, the same controls can preserve Apple’s commercial leverage. The result depends on both regulation and whether users choose to install rival stores.
For consumers, greater payment choice does not automatically mean lower prices. Fortnite is listed as free with optional in-app purchases, but the price a player sees can vary by country, taxes, transaction method and platform. Epic has claimed in its Australian campaign that direct payments could save players up to 20%; that is Epic’s claim about its payment proposal, not a guaranteed current discount everywhere. Compare the actual local price and payment route before assuming an App Store return raises or lowers the cost.
In short, Fortnite’s return is a clear availability improvement, not a verdict on every issue Epic and Apple have contested. The game was the flashpoint; the deeper fight is over who gets to distribute software, process digital payments and set the terms for competing businesses on a device people already own.
