Yes. Fortnite is available in the U.S. App Store for compatible iPhones and iPads. Its U.S. return happened in May 2025; Epic announced a wider App Store rollout in May 2026, with Australia excluded. The app is listed as free with in-app purchases. Check the official U.S. App Store listing before downloading.
How to download Fortnite on an iPhone or iPad in the U.S.
- Open the U.S. App Store on a compatible iPhone or iPad, or visit the official Fortnite listing.
- Check that the app is named Fortnite and the publisher is Epic Games.
- Tap the download button, then open the game and sign in to your Epic Games account or create one.
- Let Fortnite download any additional game content and updates. Use the Epic account you play with on other platforms if you want supported cross-platform progression and purchases.
If Fortnite does not appear, open the direct listing and check that your Apple Account uses the U.S. storefront. Confirm that your device is on Apple’s compatibility list, has enough free storage, and is not blocked by parental controls. Update iOS or iPadOS if your device supports an available update. Changing your Apple Account’s country or region can affect subscriptions, balances, payment methods, and purchases, so it is not a good first troubleshooting step. Avoid unofficial installation files or configuration profiles; if the official listing remains unavailable, contact Epic support.

Which iPhones and iPads are compatible?
Apple’s current U.S. listing names these device families. Check the live listing before installing, since compatibility can change with game updates.
- iPhone 11 and newer; iPhone XS and newer; iPhone 12 mini and newer; and iPhone SE (third generation and newer).
- iPad Pro 10.5-inch and newer; iPad Air (fourth generation and newer); iPad (tenth generation and newer); and iPad mini (sixth generation and newer).
These are the categories shown on Apple’s listing, including overlapping iPhone ranges; check your exact model there rather than assuming every iPhone qualifies. Compatibility does not promise equal performance. Frame rate, heat, battery use, and responsiveness vary by device and software, and the listing does not establish a universal storage requirement or minimum iOS version.

Why Fortnite disappeared from the App Store
On August 13, 2020, Epic added a direct-payment option to Fortnite designed to bypass Apple’s in-app purchase system. Apple treated the change as a breach of its App Store rules and removed the game. Epic sued, challenging Apple’s control over app distribution and payments, including its commission rules.
The legal outcome was not a blanket ruling that Epic won every antitrust claim. A 2021 trial-court decision produced an injunction requiring Apple to let developers communicate with users about alternative payment methods. The scope of that obligation—and Apple’s compliance with it—then became a separate focus of litigation. The Ninth Circuit’s 2023 opinion records the appellate proceedings.

What changed before Fortnite’s 2025 U.S. return?
On April 30, 2025, a federal judge found Apple in willful violation of the injunction. The court concluded that Apple’s restrictions on external payment options, including a commission on qualifying purchases made outside the App Store, conflicted with the order. It barred Apple from continuing the practices at issue while the dispute proceeded. The Associated Press reported on the ruling.
That ruling did not itself amount to a simple order telling Apple to restore Fortnite. Epic submitted the game for the U.S. storefront; Apple did not immediately approve it, and Epic asked the court to enforce the injunction. Apple’s May 15 letter and Epic’s May 16 filing document that phase of the dispute. After court pressure, the parties informed the court they had resolved the immediate issue, and Apple approved the app. Fortnite returned to the U.S. App Store on May 19–20, 2025, as reported by the Associated Press.

What the 2026 worldwide announcement means
Epic announced on May 19, 2026, that Fortnite had returned to App Stores worldwide, while identifying Australia as an exception because of a separate dispute. The announcement does not mean every country has identical distribution options: storefront region and local rules matter. For U.S. iPhone and iPad owners, Epic’s mobile availability page points to the App Store; cloud gaming is another option in supported regions. Check Epic’s announcement for the stated regional exception.
Does Fortnite’s return change how purchases work?
App distribution and payment processing are separate issues. Downloading Fortnite from Apple’s store does not, by itself, establish which payment route is available for a particular purchase, whether Apple receives a commission on it, or whether the price is lower. The litigation concerned external purchase links and Apple’s rules around them, but current checkout screens and terms can vary.

Epic has argued that direct payments can reduce costs; Apple has defended its App Store model and its rules. Those are the companies’ positions, not proof that every V-Bucks purchase is cheaper or commission-free. Check the price and payment method shown at checkout before buying. The app’s free listing does not mean all game content is free.

Fortnite is currently listed in the U.S. App Store, but that availability is not a settlement of the Epic–Apple dispute or a guarantee that the rules can never change. Apple continued to challenge rulings after the 2025 return. The Supreme Court docket records a denial by Justice Elena Kagan of Apple’s stay application on May 6, 2026; that procedural decision did not resolve every issue in the wider litigation. What if the native app is not an option?
Epic identifies cloud gaming as a way to play Fortnite on mobile in supported regions. It avoids installing the full native game, but streams gameplay over the internet: connection quality affects latency and image quality, and service availability, queues, account requirements, and controller support vary. It is not the same as downloading the App Store app. Epic’s mobile page provides its current route information. Fortnite is also available on other platforms, but their requirements and availability depend on the device and region.
