The outage referenced by this headline happened on October 20, 2025, and is not a current outage as of August 18, 2026. Amazon Web Services suffered a major disruption centered on its US-EAST-1 region in Northern Virginia. The failure affected Fortnite, Roblox and other services, while Nintendo Switch Online was also reported among the affected platforms. AWS later traced the incident to a DNS-automation race condition involving DynamoDB—not a cyberattack.
What happened to Fortnite, Roblox and Switch Online?
AWS was the common infrastructure problem, rather than Fortnite, Roblox and every other affected company failing independently at the same time. The disruption affected critical online functions such as authentication, matchmaking, APIs and service connectivity.

That distinction matters: a game can continue running for players who are already connected while new logins, matchmaking, purchases or account checks fail. The exact symptoms also varied by region and by each company’s AWS dependencies.
Timeline of the AWS outage
- October 19, 2025, 11:48–11:49 p.m. PDT: AWS’s detailed report places the beginning of the incident.
- October 20, approximately 2:25–2:40 a.m. PDT: DynamoDB DNS information was restored, after which cached records began expiring.
- Morning and early afternoon: Secondary failures involving EC2, Network Load Balancer and other services prolonged the disruption.
- Approximately 1:50 p.m. PDT: EC2 APIs and new instance launches were operating normally.
- Approximately 2:20 p.m. PDT: AWS’s detailed post-event report says the overall event ended.
- 3:01 p.m. PDT: AWS’s public update said all services had returned to normal operations.
These are different recovery milestones, not necessarily contradictory all-clear times. Restoration happened in stages, and individual games and platforms recovered at different times.

What caused the outage?
AWS said the initial failure came from a latent race condition in DynamoDB’s automated DNS-management system. The bug created an incorrect empty DNS record for the regional DynamoDB endpoint.
DNS functions like the internet’s address book. When the record became empty, systems could no longer reliably find DynamoDB even though the underlying service had not simply disappeared. That caused new connections and requests to fail.

The failure then cascaded through AWS:
- DynamoDB’s regional endpoint became difficult or impossible to resolve correctly.
- Internal AWS systems and customer applications that depended on DynamoDB began returning errors.
- EC2 instance launches were impaired because parts of the recovery and provisioning systems depended on DynamoDB.
- Network Load Balancer health checks failed for some infrastructure, creating additional connectivity problems.
- Services including Lambda, ECS, EKS, Fargate, Redshift and AWS Support experienced secondary effects.

Was the outage a cyberattack?
There is no indication in the cited reporting that the incident was caused by a cyberattack. AWS attributed it to an internal DNS-automation failure, and the Associated Press quoted a cybersecurity expert describing the event as a technology failure rather than an attack. There is no supported evidence here of a DDoS attack, malware or sabotage.

Why could one AWS region affect services worldwide?
US-EAST-1 is a major AWS region, but the explanation is not that every affected game was entirely hosted there. Companies may use AWS for only one critical dependency, such as authentication, databases, deployment systems, APIs or control-plane operations.
A service can therefore be geographically distributed and still depend on one regional component. If that component fails, users in multiple countries may be unable to log in or start a game even when the game’s main servers are located elsewhere. Cached DNS records and regional architecture can also make one player appear unaffected while another cannot connect.

How widespread was it?
The disruption extended well beyond games. The Associated Press reported that DownDetector received more than 11 million user reports involving over 2,500 companies. That is a count of reports, not a verified count of unique people affected. AWS said 64 of its internal services were affected.

The impact depended on each provider’s architecture, region and reliance on AWS.

What should players do during a similar outage?
- Check the game or platform’s official status page and verified status account.
- When several unrelated services fail at once, check the AWS Health Dashboard.
- Use DownDetector as an indicator of user reports, not definitive proof that every user is affected.
- Test another website or app to separate a local connection problem from a wider outage.
- Do not repeatedly change DNS settings, reinstall the game or replace your router when the provider confirms an upstream cloud failure.
- Wait for an official recovery notice before assuming that account data, purchases or game progress have been lost.
What was confirmed—and what was not?
Confirmed: AWS experienced a major US-EAST-1 disruption; Fortnite login and matchmaking were affected; Roblox experienced widespread access problems; and numerous unrelated services reported problems.
Reported with limited scope: Nintendo Switch Online was included in Polygon’s contemporaneous coverage, but the available evidence does not establish that all Nintendo online services, cloud saves or regions were unavailable.
Not supported: claims that every Fortnite, Roblox or Switch player was disconnected; that accounts or purchases were compromised; that the outage was a DDoS attack; or that a home router would have fixed the problem.
