Fortnite Stretched Resolution: What Competitive Players Need to Know

Fortnite’s Competitive modes are restricted to 16:9, with side bars expected. Here’s what stretched resolution changes and which display settings Epic documents.

Fortnite’s current support guidance restricts Competitive modes—including Ranked and Tournaments—to a 16:9 aspect ratio, with black bars at the sides expected. “Stretched resolution” (often shortened to “stretched res”) means forcing an image with a different aspect ratio to fill the display, which distorts it. Epic recommends using your monitor’s default resolution on PC; a stretched setup is not a documented competitive workaround.

What stretched resolution means in Fortnite

A stretched resolution displays Fortnite at an aspect ratio different from the screen’s native ratio and enlarges the image to fill the screen. That changes the image’s proportions: characters and scenery can look wider or taller than intended. Epic described this distortion as part of its rationale for removing the feature in a 2019 competitive development update.

Changing resolution and changing field of view (FOV) are not the same thing. Epic’s support instructions identify in-game FOV minimum and maximum sliders under Settings > Game; they do not say those sliders reproduce stretched resolution. See Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guidance and its FOV support page.

Is stretched resolution allowed in Fortnite Competitive?

Epic Games Player Support’s guidance, checked October 8, 2026, says Competitive modes—including Ranked, Tournaments, and similar modes—are restricted to 16:9. Epic describes black bars on the sides in those modes as expected behavior. The practical rule is to use a 16:9 aspect ratio when playing Competitive rather than trying to make a non-16:9 image fill the screen.

Ultrawide is not a workaround: Epic separately says 21:9 is unsupported in Ranked or Competitive modes. These statements establish the restriction for Competitive play; they do not establish that every noncompetitive mode accepts every aspect ratio.

Native resolution versus stretched resolution

Choice Aspect ratio and Competitive support Image shape What to expect
Monitor’s default resolution Epic’s 2026 PC settings guide recommends this baseline. Competitive modes are restricted to 16:9. Preserves the monitor’s intended proportions when used at its native/default aspect ratio. In Competitive modes, side bars may appear as expected under Epic’s guidance.
Non-native aspect ratio stretched to fill Not a documented way around the 16:9 Competitive restriction; Epic says 21:9 is unsupported in Ranked or Competitive. Distorts proportions to fill the display. Epic’s support guidance does not establish that a particular noncompetitive mode accepts it or that any specific setup works.

Epic’s PC competitive settings guide, published April 30, 2026, recommends selecting the monitor’s default resolution. It discusses 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or higher-refresh-rate monitors as setup context, not as a requirement to use native resolution and not as evidence that buying a monitor enables stretched resolution.

Why Epic moved away from stretched resolution

In its April 3, 2019 competitive development update, Epic said stretched resolution distorted characters and views and detracted from Fortnite’s entertainment experience. Epic also explained that when a setting appears to offer a gameplay advantage, players can feel compelled to use it even if the result looks or feels worse. That is Epic’s stated policy rationale, not an independently measured finding about aim, visibility, or performance.

Set up Fortnite using documented display settings

  1. Start with your display’s default resolution. Epic’s 2026 PC guidance recommends the monitor’s default resolution as the baseline.
  2. For Competitive modes, use 16:9. If black bars appear at the sides, Epic says that is expected behavior in those modes.
  3. Adjust FOV only through the documented in-game controls. Open Settings > Game and use the FOV minimum and maximum sliders described by Epic. These controls are not presented as a way to recreate stretched resolution.
  4. Do not rely on unverified configuration edits or scaling instructions. Epic’s cited guidance does not confirm that a particular config edit, GPU scaling method, or non-native resolution works today or is permitted in a specific mode.
