When did Fortnite v24.40 release?
Epic released Fortnite v24.40 on May 17, 2023. The update introduced Ranked Play as the main change and also brought new items and creator features to Creative.
What Ranked modes were available at launch?
Ranked Play launched as Season Zero, with different playlist coverage in Battle Royale and Zero Build. Its initial lineup was:

The two formats had separate ranks. This describes the May 2023 launch lineup, not the modes available in Fortnite Ranked today.

Season Zero and Arena
Ranked replaced Arena, which was discontinued with the v24.40 rollout. Epic Games Japan described Season Zero as lasting from v24.40 through the end of Chapter 4 Season 3. The announcement framed the period as a launch phase for addressing issues and concerns while developing further features and improvements.
What else changed in v24.40?
Creative received the Chug Cannon and 32 consumable item resources. The update also included vehicle visual customization options, a Mounted Turret prop device, and Ballercoaster galleries.

The phrase “Today (May 17)” in the original patch-note title referred to release day in 2023. The date and update version remain useful for identifying the patch, but v24.40 is not a current Fortnite update.
