Fortnite’s AI-powered NPC rollout is a creator feature, not a game-wide change: since Epic’s announced July 30, 2026 publishing date, creators can publish islands with LLM-powered characters. These NPCs can answer players in English, use session context, and—when creators connect them to gameplay systems—help change what happens in an island.
What “AI-powered NPCs” means in Fortnite
Epic calls its system Conversations. It is available to creators working in Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and Fortnite Creative, where they can define NPC personas that respond dynamically instead of relying only on manually written dialogue trees. The feature applies to creator-made islands; Epic’s announcements do not describe AI conversations replacing NPCs throughout every Fortnite mode. Epic’s April 16 announcement introduced Conversations as Experimental, and its July 16 announcement set July 30 as the start of publishing islands with LLM-powered characters.

What can an AI character do?
A creator describes who the NPC is, what it knows, how it behaves, and how it should speak. Players can exchange written or spoken messages, and the character can respond using the current session’s context. Creators can also pass game information to the character and use structured outputs and Verse or Scene Graph logic to connect a response to an event—such as opening a gate, helping control access to a tournament, narrating a scene, or adjusting difficulty. It is more than a chat box, but the creator must build the gameplay connection.
Epic says the session context does not persist for a player after each round. Its personas overview explains the system and how it differs from the Conversation device, where creators author dialogue manually.

Where players will encounter them—and which characters are available
Players will encounter LLM-powered characters on published creator-made islands that use the feature, rather than automatically in every Battle Royale match or other Fortnite mode. Epic said on July 16, 2026 that 36 Fortnite characters had consistent voices and personas for use as NPCs in developer-made islands. It also said a subset of its IP characters would have locked voices and personas starting with v41.30. That does not mean every Fortnite character is available, editable, or voiced using a legacy performer’s voice.
Epic said the character voice models were based on performances captured from independent professional actors who agreed their performances could be used for developer-made islands. This describes the permissions and scope Epic announced; it should not be read as a claim about every voice in Fortnite.

Are the NPCs voiced by AI, and what handles the conversation?
Yes, when a player uses voice interaction, the response can be spoken aloud. Epic identifies Google Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite for processing audio input and generating text responses, and ElevenLabs Eleven v3 for voice output. Players can also communicate in writing, so a headset or microphone is optional. Epic’s LLM Conversations documentation describes the feature’s current setup; Epic says the precise technical pipeline and supported details may change.
What happens to voice recordings and transcripts?
Epic says, “Epic does not store player audio.” In its feature documentation, Epic says voice audio is sent to Gemini to generate a response and is not used to train AI models. Ordinary transcripts are not stored or used to train models. If a player reports an interaction, its text log is sent to Epic to help improve safeguards. These are Epic’s stated practices for Conversations, not an independent audit.

Safety rules, language, and parental controls
Epic says it has added safety layers and filters, and that LLM-powered characters must follow Fortnite Developer Rules. Those rules prohibit personas designed to provide medical or mental-health guidance, simulate an intimate companion, or undermine safety systems. Players can report problematic NPC interactions through Fortnite’s in-game reporting flow. Epic’s documentation also says the characters currently respond only in English.
Parents can control the feature with the setting Allow voice and written communication with AI Features in Fortnite Parental Controls or the child’s Epic Account settings. Epic says cabined accounts require a parent or guardian to set up the account before permission can be granted. Its parental-control support page explains the permission process.

How AI conversations compare with scripted dialogue
| Approach | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Scripted Conversation device | Creators author dialogue manually, giving them tighter control over the available lines and outcomes. | Players’ exchanges are limited to the branches the creator has written. |
| LLM-powered Conversations | Characters can respond organically to unscripted exchanges and, when configured, use session context and connect structured responses to gameplay events. | Creators must account for generated responses, test safety and behavior, and build the gameplay logic; current responses are English-only. |
Neither method is automatically better. Scripted dialogue favors predictability; LLM conversations give creators more flexibility but require careful setup and testing. Epic’s personas overview describes the distinction.
