Epic announced in January 2024 that Fortnite would return to iOS later that year, initially through its own store in the European Union. The game launched there on August 16, 2024. That Europe-only description is now outdated: Epic announced on May 19, 2026, that Fortnite had returned to Apple’s App Store around the world, with Australia the stated exception.
What Epic announced in January 2024
On January 25, 2024, Epic said Fortnite would come back to iOS “later this year” in Europe. It planned to distribute the game through the Epic Games Store for iOS—not Apple’s App Store. The announcement was a plan for a future launch, not an immediate release. TechCrunch reported the announcement.

“Europe” meant the EU-focused route enabled by new EU rules, not a promise that every country on the continent would receive the same option. The United Kingdom, for example, is not covered by the EU’s Digital Markets Act.
Why the original return was limited to the EU
The EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) imposes obligations on designated large digital platforms. The European Commission identifies Apple as a gatekeeper for services including iOS, the App Store, Safari and iPadOS. Apple’s EU developer documentation describes alternative app marketplaces and distribution outside the standard App Store model. European Commission DMA questions and answers and Apple’s EU DMA documentation explain the framework.

- Darkfire Bundle: Including 3 outfits (with LEGO Styles) and back blings; Dark Power Chord, Dark Six String, Molten Omen, Molten Battle Shroud, Shadow Ark, Shadow Ark Wings, plus 3 wraps, 3 dual-wielding pickaxes, and an emote!
- Deep Freeze Bundle: Cool off with the Deep Freeze set and 1,000 V-Bucks. Includes the frostbite outfit (with LEGO Style), freezing point back bling, chill-axe pickaxe, and cold front glider.
- The Fortnite – Darkfire & Ice Bundle includes 10+ cosmetics and 1,000 V-Bucks!
The law did not automatically put Fortnite on iPhones. Epic still had to build and distribute a marketplace, while Apple’s technical, security, eligibility and commercial conditions continued to apply. The DMA created a route for alternative distribution in the EU; it did not guarantee any particular game or remove every restriction.
What launched in August 2024
Fortnite returned natively to iOS in the EU on August 16, 2024, through the Epic Games Store marketplace. Epic also identified AltStore PAL as an alternative route for EU users. At launch, Epic said native play required iOS 17.6 or later. That was the launch-era minimum, not a confirmed current requirement; check the current listing and Epic’s installation guidance for present-day compatibility. Epic’s EU launch announcement has the launch details.

Epic said EU residents could continue playing while traveling outside the EU for up to 30 days under Apple’s rules. Leaving the eligible region could affect new installations and updates even if an existing installation continued to work. Epic’s current Epic Games Store support page explains the travel-related restrictions.
What changed in May 2026
On May 19, 2026, Epic announced that Fortnite was back on Apple’s App Store around the world, except Australia, where Epic said its court dispute and payment terms remained unresolved. Epic’s current installation guidance likewise says App Store availability excludes Australia. This is Epic’s stated availability; users should check their local App Store listing if the game does not appear. Epic’s return announcement and its mobile installation overview describe the current position.

The original European alternative-store route and the later App Store return are separate distribution options. Epic’s support material lists the Epic Games Store for iOS in the EU, Japan and Australia, but its support pages are not fully consistent about some additional regions. Check Epic’s current regional guidance rather than assuming that an alternative marketplace is available wherever Fortnite appears in the App Store.

Region, device and account details to check
- Country eligibility: EU alternative-store rules are not the same as general European availability. The UK is outside the EU DMA framework, and Australia remains Epic’s stated exception for App Store distribution.
- Location and account: Store eligibility can depend on account region and location, not simply where a device was purchased. Epic’s regional restrictions guidance covers iPhone and iPad availability.
- Software and hardware: The iOS 17.6 requirement applied to the August 2024 launch. Do not assume it remains the current minimum; check the live App Store listing or Epic’s installation page. Meeting an operating-system minimum also does not guarantee acceptable performance on every older device.
- Travel: Alternative-store installations may remain playable outside an eligible region while updates or new downloads become restricted. Check Epic’s current travel guidance before relying on that installation away from home.
- Progress and purchases: Sign in with the Epic account you use on other platforms to access your account’s progress and purchases where supported. Storefront and payment handling can differ; no single payment rule applies to every distribution route.
Use official installation sources
Install Fortnite from Apple’s App Store, Epic’s official marketplace guidance or the official AltStore PAL site. Avoid random IPA files, piracy sites and unofficial signing services. Epic says it does not officially support third-party software for installing Fortnite on iOS and warns users about the risks. See Epic’s third-party installation warning.
If an install option is missing, confirm your region and device eligibility in Epic’s mobile installation overview and the relevant storefront. If native installation is unavailable, see whether a supported cloud service offers Fortnite in your location.
