Fortnite’s return to Australian iPhones is possible after Epic’s court win—but not confirmed

Epic’s Australian court victory opened a possible path for Fortnite on iPhone, but no Australian App Store launch is confirmed. Android and cloud gaming remain available.

Short answer: Epic Games won important Australian competition-law findings against Apple and Google, but that victory did not immediately put Fortnite on Australian iPhones. Epic said on 19 May 2026 that Fortnite had returned to Apple’s App Store in other regions, not Australia. No authoritative source reviewed for this article gives a confirmed Australian iOS launch date.

Australian players can still use Fortnite on Android through Google Play or the Epic Games Store app, and can stream it on supported cloud services from an iPhone or iPad.

What Epic actually won in Australia

In findings reported by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the Federal Court found in 2025 that Apple and Google had misused market power by restricting alternative app distribution and payment methods on their mobile platforms. The ACCC describes the background and its intervention in the Apple proceedings at its official statement.

That result is not the same as an order saying “put Fortnite back on every Australian iPhone.” Three separate stages matter:

  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Straight Talk., Etc.
  • Liability: the court decides whether particular conduct breached competition law.
  • Relief: the court determines what Apple or Google must change and how those changes will operate.
  • Commercial launch: Epic submits, publishes and supports Fortnite through an actual Australian distribution channel.

A liability finding can create a legal route to alternative stores, payment systems or an App Store return without producing an immediate download button.

Why the Google and Apple cases now have different outcomes

Google: settlement, not an automatic launch

Epic and Google reached a settlement in March 2026, and the Australian proceeding against Google was dismissed by consent. The ACCC says the settlement applies globally, including in Australia. The regulator’s public register records the related authorisation application at this page.

The ACCC later granted interim authorisation for effects on Australian developers connected with implementation outside Australia. Its 23–24 June update expressly did not authorise effects for Australian users; see the ACCC notice. The settlement concerns store and payment practices. It does not itself establish when Fortnite will be published in Australia, whether a particular device is supported, or whether Epic has completed its technical rollout.

Apple: relief remained the key unresolved issue

Epic’s Apple matter remained tied to the relief and implementation questions. In its 19 May 2026 update, Epic said Fortnite was back on Apple’s App Store around the world except Australia, where it was still seeking further court orders and would not return under what it described as unlawful payment terms. Read the statement at Epic’s newsroom.

The ACCC was granted leave to intervene on relief issues, saying the case could have broad implications for competition in digital services and app distribution. Until applicable orders are made and implemented, the legal victory should be treated as an opening for a possible launch, not proof that one has occurred.

Is Fortnite coming to Australian iPhones?

Possibly, but there is no confirmed Australian iOS launch. The court findings could enable alternative distribution, alternative payments or a return to Apple’s App Store. Epic’s latest dated statement reviewed here nevertheless said Fortnite had not returned to the Australian App Store, and no verified launch date was provided.

Epic’s own support pages also conflict. One says Fortnite remains unavailable on the Australian App Store and lists alternative-store availability only in the European Union and Japan: Fortnite on iPhone and iPad. Another support answer says Australians can install through the Epic Games Store for iOS: Epic’s installation options. A more detailed installation page says the Epic Games Store app is currently available only in the EU and on iPhone in Japan: regional availability details.

Because those pages do not agree, do not describe the Epic Games Store as an established Australian iOS option without checking Epic’s live storefront and a new first-party announcement.

What Australians can use now

Device or route Status reported by official material What it means
Android Google Play and Epic Games Store app Epic’s support page says both routes are available worldwide, subject to device, account and regional configuration.
iPhone or iPad App Store Not confirmed for Australia Epic’s dated newsroom update said Australia was excluded, while its support page says the game is unavailable there.
iPhone or iPad through Epic Games Store Conflicting Epic support pages Verify current Australian eligibility directly before relying on this route.
Cloud gaming on iPhone or iPad Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna listed by Epic Streams Fortnite without installing the native iOS app; supported region, account and connection requirements apply.

Epic’s Android and cloud-gaming guidance is on its installation support page. Cloud play avoids the Australian App Store restriction, but latency, image compression, queues, browser support, controller compatibility and data use depend on the service and your connection.

What must happen before a native Australian launch

The following is an implementation sequence, not a published court timetable:

  1. Australian courts issue or confirm the relief that applies to Apple’s distribution and payment terms.
  2. Apple changes the relevant Australian rules, or Epic accepts a compliant framework.
  3. Epic submits Fortnite, and potentially its store application, for Australian distribution.
  4. Apple reviews and signs the relevant app or marketplace under the applicable rules.
  5. Epic activates Australian storefront, payment, tax, age-rating and account systems.
  6. Epic publishes a clear Australian availability announcement and a supported update path.

A legal remedy, an approved app and a working regional service are separate milestones. A change in one does not automatically complete the others.

Why Fortnite disappeared in 2020

In August 2020, Epic added a direct payment option to Fortnite that bypassed Apple’s and Google’s in-app payment systems. Both companies removed the game from their stores, and Epic sued. The ACCC’s account says the disputed commissions were approximately 30% of in-app purchases. Epic separately argues that its direct-payment option could save players up to 20%; that is Epic’s advocacy, not a guaranteed Australian price or a neutral finding about every transaction.

Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max, 256GB, Black Titanium - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.

A future iOS return therefore does not guarantee cheaper V-Bucks. Pricing would depend on the permitted payment model, Epic’s implementation, Australian GST, currency conversion and whether a purchase occurs inside the app or through an external checkout.

What not to do while waiting

  • Do not install unofficial Fortnite files, modified IPAs or account-sharing packages.
  • Do not treat a VPN or changing an Apple account’s country as a supported solution; doing so can affect payment methods, subscriptions, purchases and Family Sharing.
  • Do not assume an old sideloaded copy will keep authenticating, updating or working with current iOS versions.

Epic says some third-party iOS installation methods are unsupported and used at the player’s own risk. Its warning is available at this support page.

What to watch next

  • Final Australian court orders in the Apple matter.
  • The ACCC’s final determination on the Google–Epic settlement.
  • An official Epic announcement specifically naming Australia.
  • A live Australian App Store listing or an unambiguous, current Epic installation page.
  • Device, operating-system, age-rating and payment details for any new distribution route.

The Bottom Line

Epic’s Australian victory made a Fortnite return to iPhone legally more attainable, but it did not complete the launch. As of 16 August 2026, there is no confirmed Australian App Store release date. Use official Android or cloud-gaming options now, and rely on a direct Epic or Apple announcement before treating native Australian iOS availability as real.
