Why the guide recommends some heroes
Tier labels are easier to use when paired with a hero’s contribution. Pocket Gamer’s descriptions point to several different ways a character can help a team:

- Summons and team synergy: Violet summons Shadow Soldiers; her passive strengthens summons and lets them benefit from additional stats supplied by other heroes. Malleus jumps toward the largest enemy group, deals damage, pulls enemies together, and buffs Machina allies.
- Healing and protection: Styria heals and shields allies, while her passive increases allied HP. Scarecrow, an easy-to-upgrade Unique hero according to the guide, heals and turns excess healing into a shield.
- Area damage and control: Winter deals area damage and knocks enemies back; after four skill hits, she freezes enemies. Ravia deals area damage, inflicts bleed, and can execute weakened targets. Soba boosts allied attack while dealing damage and knocking enemies down.
- Control and boss utility: Zelos deals damage, inflicts Fear, can stun bosses, and absorbs some HP based on damage dealt. Jibril is described as a burst-damage dealer effective against both single targets and groups.
- Situational durability and disruption: Bruce deals area damage and passively raises allied attack. Loxia applies crowd control. Bernhard deals area damage, reduces defense, taunts, and can gain crowd-control immunity; Pocket Gamer notes that the right team and opponents could support a higher placement for him.
How to choose heroes for your team
Use the tier as a first-pass shortlist, then consider what your lineup actually needs. A hero’s place in one broad ranking does not settle whether that hero fits your current mode, team composition, or investment plans.
- Match the mode: PvE waves, PvE bosses, and PvP are distinct comparison points. A character’s area damage may matter differently from single-target damage or boss control.
- Look at role and contribution: Consider damage alongside crowd control, healing, shields, buffs, and other effects. A support or control hero may contribute in ways that a simple damage comparison misses.
- Check synergy: Violet’s summon benefits and Malleus’s Machina buff are examples of abilities whose value depends on other heroes in the lineup.
- Weigh access and investment: The tier list is not, by itself, a guide to how quickly you can obtain or upgrade a hero. Consider your available roster and resources before changing plans around a ranking.
Pocket Gamer advises against rerolling, arguing that early access is limited and rerolling would delete progress without guaranteeing a top hero. That is the guide’s recommendation, not an independently verified description of every player’s account or reroll outcome.
Why other Fortress Saga rankings differ
Tier lists should not be averaged into a single consensus when they use different scopes or methods. Kamigame’s ranking, updated October 6, 2026, separates PvE waves, PvE bosses, and PvP; its wave list places Violet, Ruingaladh, Iris, and other heroes at SS, while Pocket Gamer assigns some of those heroes different tiers. MobileMatters’ August 2026 list puts Winter, Ruingaladh, Ravia, and Elizabeth in S; Pocket Gamer lists them in S, S+, A, and B respectively.
Those differences make the publication date, game version, region, and intended mode important context when using any recommendation. Pocket Gamer’s list is global-facing, dated September 16, 2026, and tied to version 2.1.02; it should not be read as a mode-specific ranking or a guarantee of performance for every team.
