Playground Games revealed the setting during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show livestream on September 25, 2025, describing Japan as a highly requested destination. The game launched worldwide on Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 19, 2026, with Premium early access beginning May 15. PlayStation 5 was announced for a later 2026 release, but the official materials cited here do not provide a specific PS5 date.
Is Forza Horizon 6 set in Japan?
Yes. Japan is the confirmed setting, not a rumor or leak. Playground Games said the country had been one of the community’s most requested destinations when it announced the game. The reveal announcement stated: “Today we joined the Xbox Tokyo Game Show livestream to reveal Forza Horizon 6 featuring our next, highly requested destination: Japan.”
The game presents a fictionalized interpretation of Japan rather than a complete reproduction of the country. Playground Games describes a world that combines modern and traditional areas, urban and rural environments, and city roads with mountain routes.

What part of Japan is in Forza Horizon 6?
Playground Games has not presented the map as a one-to-one copy of a single Japanese prefecture. Instead, its official descriptions identify several real-world inspirations and represented environments:
- Tokyo City: dense urban driving, including routes inspired by the C1 loop and Gingko Avenue.
- Japanese Alps: snowy mountain scenery and high-altitude roads.
- Mt. Haruna and Bandai Azuma: mountain-pass inspirations for winding, elevation-changing routes.
The January 2026 overview calls Tokyo City five times larger than Forza Horizon 5’s Guanajuato. That is Playground Games’ own comparison, not an independently measured area calculation.

How the map is designed
| Driving contrast | What Playground Games describes |
|---|---|
| Urban versus rural | Tokyo City streets sit alongside countryside and mountain landscapes. |
| City streets versus passes | Players move from major urban routes to steep, technical roads such as the Mt. Haruna and Bandai Azuma inspirations. |
| Density and elevation | The developer calls this its “most dense and vertical” map yet. |
These are design descriptions from the developer, not independent rankings of map size, realism or driving quality.
What is the Forza Horizon 6 campaign like?
Joining the festival
The campaign begins with the player as a tourist hoping to join the Horizon Festival in Japan. Progression runs through qualifying events and wristbands rather than a single linear road trip.

What Playground Games says about putting the festival in Japan
Torben Ellert, Playground Games design director, explained the creative premise in an Xbox Wire interview: “I think it came from the fact that we had selected Japan for this location, and we felt that Japan was such an exciting, interesting, intriguing location that many people have wanted from our franchise for a long time, that we’ve wanted to do for a long time, but then as Don has kind of spoken to, what would it feel like if the festival actually was there? It would — it wouldn’t dominate Japan. It would be part of Japan.”
That distinction matters: the setting is designed as a Horizon Festival interpretation of Japan, not as a claim to represent every region, road or driving tradition in the country.
What changed from the original “reportedly headed” story?
The original wording belonged to the period before the reveal. On September 25, 2025, Playground Games confirmed Japan during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show livestream. Later announcements supplied the May 19, 2026 Xbox and PC launch date, the May 15 Premium early-access date and the staged PlayStation 5 plan. The location question is therefore settled; only platform timing and future service details require checking against newer announcements.
