Blocking the other player is part of the contest. The familiar Hasbro Connect 4 edition is one version of the game; other editions and variants can change the rules.
How do you play the classic game?
- Set up the grid. The classic Hasbro edition includes a grid, two legs, a slider bar, 21 red discs, 21 yellow discs, and instructions. Adult assembly is required. Hasbro lists the game for two players ages 6 and up. See the Hasbro classic Connect 4 product page for its product details.
- Take turns dropping discs. Players use their own color and take turns placing discs in the grid. The discs stack as they fall into a column.
- Make four connected discs. The first player to get four in a row wins. A line can run horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Hasbro’s classic listing states the goal as being first to get four in a row and advises blocking an opponent who is close to completing a line.
Each move can help build your own line or prevent the other player from completing one. Pay attention to the spaces a disc will support: a move can make a winning space available to either player on a later turn.
Is five in a row allowed, and does it still win?
A common question is: “When you play connect 4 is it allowed to get 5 in a row and still win?” Hasbro’s classic product description says the goal is four in a row, but it does not explicitly settle whether a move that creates five connected discs counts. The product text alone therefore does not establish a definitive ruling for that edge case. Check the rule sheet for the specific edition you are playing, or agree on a house rule before starting.
What variants change the rules?
Hasbro’s Connect 4 (01081) instructions describe three modes. These rules apply to that edition; not every game sold as Four in a Row includes the same variants. Players drop checkers into the grid and try to make four in a row, following the classic objective.
Pop Out
Players can remove a checker from the bottom of a column, changing which pieces remain stacked above it. That added move alters the board as well as the usual drop-and-connect play.

Pop 10
Players pop checkers out and keep a checker when it is part of a four-in-a-row. The first player to collect 10 checkers wins, according to Hasbro’s instructions. The goal is to collect qualifying checkers, rather than simply to be first to make one line.
How do physical editions compare?
These Hasbro options are all for two players, but differ in portability, age guidance, or mechanics. Product availability may vary by location.

Yes. Markus Böck’s 2025 paper, “Strongly Solving 7×6 Connect-Four on Consumer Grade Hardware,” reports that a lookup table for the standard 7×6 board was produced in 47 hours on one CPU core with 128 GB of main memory; the table was 89.6 GB. That is a computational result about analyzing the game, not a simple strategy guide. It does not, by itself, provide beginner opening recommendations. Read the 2025 paper on arXiv for the technical account.
