Windows 11 has no universal “maximum FPS” switch. The safest gains usually come from using the correct GPU, reducing background contention, improving frame pacing or latency, and eliminating storage or thermal bottlenecks—not from registry hacks. Before changing anything, note your current settings (or create a restore point), then change one major item at a time and compare the same game scene afterward.
This guide applies to compatible Windows 11 Home and Pro PCs, including laptops and handhelds. Menu labels can differ slightly by Windows update, hardware manufacturer, GPU, or device mode.
1. Update Windows, drivers and the game first
Install ordinary Windows updates, review relevant optional driver updates, update the graphics and chipset stack, and patch the game before tuning advanced settings. Microsoft says updates can include compatibility fixes and performance improvements: Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates. Install relevant drivers, but do not blindly install every optional driver on a stable system.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the latest stable graphics driver from the appropriate source: NVIDIA App or NVIDIA’s official driver page, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, or Intel Graphics Software.
- On a laptop, check Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, HP, MSI, or the relevant manufacturer for approved graphics, chipset, firmware, power-management and hotkey packages.
- Update the game and launcher, then reboot again if a driver or Windows update requests it.
“Latest” is not automatically “best.” A new driver can introduce a regression, so check the game developer’s patch notes and the GPU vendor’s release notes when a problem began after an update. Laptop graphics switching, display modes and power controls may work more reliably with an OEM-approved driver than with a generic package.

2. Configure Windows Graphics settings for each game
Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Microsoft documents this page, including per-app GPU selection and windowed-game optimization, at Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11.
Assign the high-performance GPU
This matters most on laptops and desktops with integrated and discrete graphics.
- Under Custom options for apps, find the game. If it is absent, choose Add an app and browse to the game’s actual rendering
.exe. - Select the game, choose Options, select High performance, and click Save.
- Fully quit and relaunch the game.
The choices may be Let Windows decide, Power saving and High performance. Select the renderer rather than merely the launcher when a title uses separate launcher, anti-cheat and game executables. If it still uses the integrated GPU, add the executable that performs rendering, connect AC power, leave battery-saving mode, check the laptop’s OEM GPU mode, and verify the active GPU in Task Manager. NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Software may also have a conflicting per-game profile.
Test Optimizations for windowed games
Under the Graphics page’s default settings, turn on Optimizations for windowed games, then restart the game. The feature targets compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless-windowed modes. Microsoft says it moves supported titles from the older blt presentation model to the newer flip model, which can reduce presentation latency and enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on compatible displays.
This is not a guaranteed FPS increase. Exclusive-fullscreen games, other rendering paths and unsupported titles may show little change. If a particular game flickers, stutters, has HDR problems or feels less responsive, open its per-app Graphics options, disable the optimization and restart. When Windows will not let you disable it, turn off Auto HDR first; Microsoft says enabling Auto HDR automatically enables this optimization.
Use Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling as an A/B test
Where available, find Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling under Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Default graphics settings. Microsoft describes the mechanism as moving much GPU scheduling work from the CPU to dedicated GPU hardware: DirectX Graphics settings guidance.

Optional software such as Anti-Virus and Office 365 can also be easily downloaded through the Microsoft Windows App Store.
Record the original state, enable HAGS, reboot, and test the same game, scene and settings. Compare average FPS, 1% lows or a frame-time graph, input latency, recording behavior and stability. Results vary with the GPU, driver, game, overlays, capture software and features such as frame generation. If crashes, stutter, display problems or worse frame pacing appear, restore the prior state and reboot. Do not use a registry tweak to force a permanent setting.
Treat Auto HDR and VRR as optional display features
Auto HDR needs an HDR-capable display and compatible game behavior. It can improve image quality but may produce washed-out colors or incorrect brightness. Variable refresh rate needs a compatible display and correctly configured FreeSync, G-SYNC or VESA Adaptive-Sync; it smooths uneven frame delivery but creates no additional rendering performance. These features are quality and smoothness options, not universal FPS boosters.

Review startup programs
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Startup apps, and disable programs that do not need to launch with Windows. Sort by startup impact if useful. Microsoft’s guidance is at Windows performance optimization.
Do not disable GPU control services, audio, security, anti-cheat components required by a game, or laptop fan, hotkey, networking and power-management services without understanding their role. If a missing fan profile, hotkey or device feature follows a change, re-enable the item.
Close only resource-heavy processes you recognize
Before launching a demanding game, inspect Task Manager > Processes for browsers with many tabs, video renderers, cloud-sync jobs, launchers downloading patches, virtual machines, recording or RGB utilities, overlays and unknown processes using unusual CPU, memory or disk. Microsoft recommends Task Manager for identifying these bottlenecks. Do not terminate an unfamiliar Windows process simply because it uses memory.
Limit background activity selectively
For supported apps, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage, find the app, select More options > Manage background activity, and set Let this app run in the background to Never only when it does not need notifications, syncing or updates. Microsoft notes that “Never” also prevents those background notifications and updates: background-activity controls.

Use Best performance when plugged in
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and select Best performance when maximum performance matters, preferably on AC power. Microsoft warns that this uses more electricity and can increase heat, fan noise and battery drain.
On a laptop, watch temperatures and clock speeds after changing the mode. Extra heat can trigger thermal throttling and make performance worse. Balanced or the manufacturer’s smart mode is often preferable for ordinary work or battery gaming; use the OEM performance or turbo profile when the cooling system is designed for it.
Leave Game Mode enabled by default
Windows 11’s control is at Settings > Gaming > Game Mode. Microsoft’s settings reference associates it with the AutoGameModeEnabled value: Windows 11 settings reference. Leave it enabled for a normal setup unless a specific game or capture workflow documents a conflict. Its purpose is resource prioritization and reducing interference, not a guaranteed large FPS increase.
Do not confuse ordinary Game Mode with the newer Xbox full-screen experience, which is aimed at controller-based navigation on supported Windows 11 24H2-or-later devices and markets: Microsoft’s Windows gaming full-screen experience information.
4. Put games on healthy storage and verify what changed
Use an SSD for loading and streaming
A healthy SSD can improve launch times, level loading, patching and asset streaming, especially in games designed around fast storage. It does not automatically increase GPU-limited FPS. FPS is primarily governed by CPU, GPU, resolution and game settings; frame-time consistency can also reflect scheduling, shader compilation, drivers, storage and background activity. DirectStorage is a Windows gaming feature intended to improve loading, but the game and hardware must support it: Windows 11 PC gaming features.
Avoid a nearly full drive
Open Settings > System > Storage, select Storage Sense, and run or configure automatic cleanup. Review temporary files before deleting them. Microsoft’s storage guidance is included in its Windows performance recommendations. There is no universal “keep exactly 20% free” rule; avoid filling the system or game drive and follow the SSD manufacturer’s advice.

Do not repeatedly defragment an SSD with third-party software. Windows’ built-in drive optimization handles SSD maintenance differently from traditional hard-drive defragmentation.
Measure instead of assuming
- Record the original settings.
- Use the same game, scene, resolution, graphics preset and rendering API.
- Test for several minutes, not only at the opening menu.
- Compare average FPS, 1% lows or frame-time graphs, stutter frequency, GPU and CPU utilization, temperatures and clock speeds. Measure input latency only with a suitable tool.
- Change one major setting at a time and reboot whenever Windows or the setting requires it.
- Roll back a change if stability or frame pacing gets worse.
Xbox Game Bar’s performance widget, Task Manager and GPU-vendor overlays are convenient. CapFrameX or PresentMon provide more serious frame-time analysis; MSI Afterburner and RTSS can monitor and cap frames, but third-party overlays can conflict with some anti-cheat systems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshooting common results
The game still chooses the integrated GPU
- Add the rendering executable, not just the launcher.
- Restart the game and, if necessary, reboot Windows.
- Connect the charger and disable battery-saving mode.
- Check the OEM graphics mode and Windows Task Manager’s GPU engine column.
- Review NVIDIA or AMD per-game profiles for conflicts.
HAGS caused stutter or crashes
- Reboot after changing HAGS.
- Test overlays, recording and frame generation separately.
- Return HAGS to its previous state if problems persist.
- Update or roll back the graphics driver and consider shader-compilation behavior.
Best performance made a laptop slower
Check temperatures and clocks for thermal throttling. Switch back to Balanced, confirm the charger and cooling profile, and use the manufacturer’s performance mode only if temperatures remain controlled.
A borderless game got worse
Disable Optimizations for windowed games for that title, turn off Auto HDR first if required, restart, and compare borderless with exclusive fullscreen.
A setting is missing
Different Windows builds, unsupported drivers or GPUs, OEM controls, a single-GPU system, redesigned Graphics pages and work-managed PCs can hide options. Install pending Windows and GPU updates, then search Settings for Graphics, Game Mode or Power mode. Windows 10 instructions may use obsolete menu names.
Changes to avoid as routine “gaming tweaks”
- Disabling every Windows service, Microsoft Defender or Windows Update.
- Random registry tweaks, routine shader-cache deletion or global disabling of fullscreen optimizations.
- Manual processor affinity for every game or third-party “RAM cleaners.”
- Forcing High performance permanently on battery.
- Disabling every overlay when you need one for monitoring or accessibility.
Final checklist
- Windows, GPU, chipset, OEM firmware and the game are updated.
- Each demanding game is assigned to the correct rendering GPU.
- Windowed-game optimization is tested for compatible DX10/DX11 borderless or windowed titles.
- HAGS is measured as an A/B test, not assumed to help.
- Startup and background activity have been reviewed without disabling essential services.
- Best performance is used mainly on AC power with temperatures monitored.
- The game drive is a healthy SSD with sensible free space.
- Before-and-after FPS, frame-time, utilization and temperature results are recorded.
The Bottom Line
Start with updates, per-game GPU assignment, controlled background activity and a repeatable measurement. Windows settings can improve consistency, latency or loading, but they cannot overcome a GPU, CPU, memory or cooling bottleneck that your measurements identify.
