Free Fire did reach a reported milestone of more than 80 million daily active users—but that was a record peak announced in May 2020, not an average daily audience or a current player count. Sea Limited disclosed the figure with its first-quarter 2020 results.
What did “80 million daily users” mean?
Sea Limited described Free Fire as having reached a record high of over 80 million peak daily active users. “Peak” is essential: the figure indicates a high-water mark, not that more than 80 million people played on every day or that this was the game’s average daily audience. Sea announced it on May 18, 2020, in its Q1 results; Game Developer reported the milestone on May 20.

Sea Limited’s Q1 2020 results are the primary source for the number. Game Developer’s May 20 report also characterized it as a new peak.
Why was the milestone notable at the time?
Sea paired the audience figure with rankings for the same quarter, attributed to App Annie. These were historical Q1 2020 results, not present-day rankings:

- It ranked third globally by Google Play downloads in the mobile games category in Q1 2020.
The distinctions matter: one ranking concerns revenue in two named regions, while the other concerns downloads on Google Play worldwide. Neither establishes a current “largest game” ranking.
How did engagement and esports fit in?
Sea said it organized more than twice as many online Free Fire esports tournaments in Q1 2020 as in Q1 2019, and those Q1 2020 tournaments drew over 90 million views. The view figure applies to tournament content, not to unique players or the game’s total audience.

On the Q1 2020 earnings call, CEO Forrest Li credited growth to broader trends and company efforts to engage users with fresh, creative, localized content. He cited examples from that period, including the Kalahari map and a ranked Clash Squad mode. That is Sea’s explanation of its performance, not independent proof that any one feature caused the audience record. The call also reported that in April 2020 more than 10% of Free Fire’s monthly active users in India were monthly paying users; this is an India-specific historical measure, not a global rate.

Does the figure tell us how many people play Free Fire now?
No. The 80-million figure is a historical peak reported in 2020. These sources do not establish Free Fire’s current daily active users, current market availability, or current rankings. A present-day count would require a newer, comparable disclosure; the 2020 peak should not be presented as today’s player total.
