Overlay galleries offer a place to look, but a gallery listing alone does not confirm that a particular New Year design is free today—check the individual asset before using it.
Where to find a free New Year stream overlay
Start with an overlay gallery or asset library and search for a New Year design. StreamElements has a gallery of ready-to-go overlay assets, and OWN3D says it offers some free assets. Neither fact confirms that a particular New Year-themed overlay is currently free, so check the price and terms on the exact design before selecting it.
- In StreamElements, choose CREATE, optionally name the asset, then select GO TO MY OVERLAYS to open the gallery and your overlays. The gallery workflow is described in the StreamElements gallery guide.
- Compare suitable designs by whether they are free now, their license and reuse terms, their canvas size and editability, whether they are static or animated, and whether they are provided as a browser URL or download. StreamElements supports static and animated overlays; the precise options depend on the asset.
- Read the specific asset’s license before broadcasting, especially for commercial streams, and before redistributing or modifying it. “Free” does not by itself establish permission for every use.
Add a StreamElements overlay to OBS
StreamElements overlays are rendered in streaming software through a browser source. Its OBS guide, updated May 7, 2024, documents this URL-based setup; it does not specify an OBS version.
- Open the overlay in the StreamElements dashboard or editor and copy its overlay URL. StreamElements documents copying it from either location in its Adding Overlays to OBS Studio guide.
- In OBS, select the scene where the graphic should appear. In the Sources panel, select +, choose Browser, and create a new source.
- Paste the overlay URL into the source’s URL field. Set the source width and height to suit the stream canvas, then confirm the source properties.
- Preview the scene and adjust the source’s position and size in the OBS canvas. Check that it does not obscure gameplay, captions, alerts, or other content that viewers need to see.
Choose dimensions and check the scene
StreamElements recommends matching the overlay dimensions to the stream resolution. A smaller canvas can be useful if you want more flexibility to position the design within the broadcasting software. The StreamElements overlay editor guide explains its sizing approach.

- Use the stream canvas dimensions when the overlay is designed to cover or align with the full frame.
- Use a smaller source when the design is a movable accent or panel, and position it in OBS.
- Preview the complete scene before going live. Look for cropped edges, misplaced text, and elements that cover important content.
Troubleshoot an overlay that does not appear or update
The overlay is blank or missing
Check that the Browser source contains the complete URL copied from the provider’s dashboard or editor, then confirm that the source is enabled in the selected scene. Reopen the source properties to verify the URL and dimensions.
The overlay is the wrong size or position
Confirm the source width and height against the intended canvas, then reposition or resize it in the OBS preview. StreamElements’ sizing guidance distinguishes a full-resolution overlay from a smaller overlay intended to be placed in the broadcast software.
