Freeaim raised $316,700 (£250,000) in June 2024 to develop and scale its motorized VR Shoes, with a consumer release then targeted for 2025. That date was a plan, not a guarantee: Freeaim later took the consumer version to Kickstarter, which was funded, and its website now advertises late pledges. The company lists the consumer version at £989 excluding VAT, but the available information does not establish that all campaign rewards have shipped or that ordinary retail sales are open.
What Freeaim’s 2024 funding round was for
On June 18, 2024, Freeaim announced a £250,000 pre-seed round, reported as $316,700. The round was led by Nikolaus Oldendorff through the Oldendorff family office. Freeaim said the funding would support the immediate launch of a developer version of its VR Shoes and help scale production toward a consumer release planned for 2025. GamesBeat’s report on the round describes that original roadmap.
The announcement was a funding and development milestone, not a retail launch announcement. It showed Freeaim’s aim to move from prototype and developer or enterprise work toward consumer production; it did not guarantee that consumer units would be on sale by a particular date.
How the VR Shoes work
Freeaim’s VR Shoes are wearable robotic locomotion devices, not ordinary tracked footwear. Each shoe has a motorized omnidirectional platform. As the wearer walks, the platform is intended to move the foot back or sideways, keeping the person roughly within a small real-world area while their avatar continues walking in VR. The concept is to make foot-based movement possible without a large, room-spanning treadmill. Freeaim’s product overview describes the motorized, wireless system.

Freeaim’s intended experience is more natural than moving with a joystick or sliding on a stationary low-friction surface. That is the design goal, not a guarantee that every user will find it natural immediately. The shoes add weight to the feet, require setup and charging, and take practice. A support frame is included with current purchases; Freeaim says experienced users can operate without it, but that should not be read as advice for beginners to skip it.
What happened to the 2025 launch target?
- June 2024: Freeaim announced the pre-seed round and a consumer-release target for 2025.
- July 2025: The company launched a consumer Kickstarter campaign, which was successfully funded.
- Current status: Freeaim’s consumer page says late pledges are available. Its product page lists a Kickstarter version, but these signals do not by themselves prove broad delivery to backers or the start of conventional retail sales.
Freeaim’s consumer page describes the funded campaign and late pledges. Road to VR’s campaign report said the campaign had surpassed its goal and cited a February 2026 fulfillment indication, while noting that a firm release date had not been announced at the time. A funded campaign, a stated fulfillment estimate, late-pledge availability, and completed delivery are different things. Check the current campaign and seller terms before paying.

The recommended area is a company guideline, not an independent safety standard. Allow room for the support frame, the headset’s boundary, nearby furniture, cables, and a safe way to stop or recover your balance. A small footprint does not mean collision or fall risks disappear. Freeaim says batteries are replaceable or quick-swappable in its product description; check the version and included battery details when ordering.
Compatibility: SteamVR first, Quest selectively
Freeaim’s primary stated environment is SteamVR on a Windows PC. The company says the shoes can work with SteamVR titles that support smooth locomotion and with Unreal or Unity applications running through SteamVR. That does not mean every SteamVR game will work as expected: a title’s movement modes, input mappings, and PC VR setup matter. Games built around teleport movement or unusual locomotion may not accept the shoes’ inputs in a useful way.

Freeaim also names a limited set of standalone Meta Quest games or configurations: VRChat, Until You Fall, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners 2, and Team Beef mods including Doom 3 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Treat Quest support as selective, not universal. Freeaim’s FAQ describes broader standalone Quest and PSVR support as in development, and an SDK as under development; that should not be mistaken for shipped support. What to expect in use
Freeaim says users may need time to build confidence, and that rapid movement may be easier with the support frame. Demonstration footage can feature people who already know how to use the system, so it may not show a first session. Before considering the shoes, account for more than the advertised locomotion concept:

- Balance and learning: Turning, strafing, crouching, stopping, and moving quickly may take practice. New users should use the frame and follow the company’s setup guidance.
- Weight and comfort: Devices weighing 1.3–1.6 kg per shoe put extra load on the feet. Fit, ankle and foot fatigue, and session length are personal considerations.
- Battery management: The stated 1.5–2 hours may not cover long play sessions, and actual duration varies with use.
- Room and cable management: Keep the frame and headset boundary clear; manage any PC VR cable so it cannot snag or trip you.
- Health and safety claims: Freeaim markets benefits such as reduced motion sickness and says the shoes are designed for safe, stable use. Those are company claims, not universal outcomes or evidence of an independent safety certification. Motion sickness varies by person, game, frame rate, and movement profile.
Freeaim Shoes versus a conventional VR treadmill
Freeaim’s main distinction is its format: motorized footwear intended to work in a compact area rather than a large stationary platform. A conventional product such as the KAT Walk C2 uses a fixed treadmill setup and dedicated footwear. Neither format is automatically better; the choice depends on available space, desired support, setup preference, and compatibility. KAT’s configurations and pricing can vary, so check its current product and comparison pages before comparing total costs.

Who should consider Freeaim?

They may suit buyers who value foot-based movement and a compact concept enough to accept a learning curve and a crowdfunding-style consumer buying route.
They are a weaker match for casual Quest users seeking a plug-and-play standalone accessory, anyone without clearance for the recommended play area and frame, people who dislike heavy footwear or frequent charging, and buyers who need guaranteed compatibility with every game or conventional retail delivery and returns. If those conditions matter, verify them before committing rather than relying on broad descriptions such as “SteamVR compatible” or “available.”

What to verify before pledging or ordering
- Whether the page is accepting late pledges or ordinary retail orders, and what that specific route promises.
- Estimated delivery, shipping cost, VAT, import duties, and the final payable total for your country.
- Refund, cancellation, warranty, and support terms for the particular purchase route.
- Compatibility with your headset, PC setup, and the exact games or applications you plan to use.
- Your shoe fit, body weight relative to the stated recommendation, room clearance, and comfort with the frame and device weight.
