In 2021, coverage described decks focused on inventors, civil-rights figures, women in computing, and space and flight. That reporting establishes the themes, but not a measured learning experience or what information individual cards contain.
What is FreeCell Challenge?
Droid Gamers reported on May 13, 2021, that entrepreneurs Darshan Somashekar and Neal Taparia, who were behind Solitaired, developed FreeCell Challenge as a standalone game focused on FreeCell. At the time, the report said it could be played online and through Google Play. Those are historical availability details; current website and store status are not confirmed here.
The game’s distinction is its themed decks. The 2021 reports described designs celebrating notable people and movements, developed in collaboration with organizations including Encyclopaedia Britannica and MIT. Gamezebo also named Who2 among the collaborators. These are reported collaborations and themes, not confirmation of a current catalog.
The reported deck themes
- Women’s Hall of Fame
- Heroes of Space & Flight
- Notable Women in Computing
- Heroes of the Civil Rights Movement
- Inspiring Inventors
The available coverage presents these as themes for card decks. It does not establish that the game provides biographies, lessons, or other specific educational material about each subject.

How the FreeCell puzzle works
In standard FreeCell, every card is dealt face up, so the puzzle is open-information: you can see the cards you will need to arrange. Solitaire Laboratory describes the core rules as building tableau columns downward in alternating colors, using four free cells to hold cards temporarily, and building suit foundations upward.
- Tableau: Arrange cards in descending rank, alternating red and black.
- Free cells: Use the four temporary spaces to hold cards while rearranging the tableau.
- Foundations: Build each suit upward from its starting card toward completion.
The free cells and empty tableau columns are limited maneuvering space. A move that clears a card may help in the short term but leave fewer options for the next sequence, so planning storage and keeping space available are central to play.

FreeCell Challenge is not the separate “Challenge FreeCell” variant
The name can be confusing. Solitaire Laboratory uses “Challenge FreeCell” for a separate variant in Pretty Good Solitaire that changes the initial deal. FreeCell Challenge, as covered by the 2021 game reports, is the standalone title with themed decks; the two names do not refer to the same game.

Solitaire Laboratory’s FAQ credits Paul Alfille with creating the first FreeCell program for the PLATO educational computer system in 1978. It also credits Jim Horne with helping popularize the game through character-based DOS and graphical Windows versions, and says Horne’s Windows version first appeared in Microsoft Entertainment Pack 2 in 1992.
