When is the Freelander 8 coming to New Zealand?
Freelander is due to launch in New Zealand in 2027, with the Freelander 8 leading the local range. The announcement does not specify a month, quarter or on-sale date. Australia is also named as a 2027 market, and both countries are described as priority right-hand-drive destinations in the brand’s international roadmap.
The roadmap, published on 1 October 2026, says the brand’s initial market focus is the Middle East, followed by a second phase centred on right-hand-drive markets, prioritising Australia and New Zealand. It does not provide a more precise New Zealand schedule. FREELANDER’s international roadmap
What is the Freelander brand?
Freelander is a standalone brand created through the relationship between JLR and Chery, not a new Land Rover model. Under a plan announced on 19 June 2024, JLR licensed the Freelander name to CJLR, its 50:50 joint venture with Chery. The planned vehicle portfolio is based on Chery electric-vehicle architecture and is to be manufactured at Changshu, China. The brand describes itself as a “British premium intelligent all-terrain brand.” That is its positioning, not an independent assessment of the vehicle’s capabilities.
What is known about the Freelander 8?
The Freelander 8 is described as a large, electrified SUV, with five- and six-seat versions planned. The New Zealand launch report says it is more than five metres long and reports battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and range-extender electric powertrains. It has not confirmed which seating layouts or powertrains will be offered here.

Earlier Chinese regulatory filings cited in the report give dimensions of up to 5,185 mm long, 2,050 mm wide, 1,898 mm tall and a 3,040 mm wheelbase. These are China-related figures, not confirmed New Zealand specifications. Equipment previously reported for the vehicle includes twin-chamber air suspension, an electronic limited-slip differential, roof-mounted LiDAR, Huawei Qiankun ADS driver assistance and large dashboard displays. The six-seat version has also been reported with second-row captain’s chairs offering heating, ventilation and massage. None of those items has been confirmed for the New Zealand market. The brand says it expects to use existing local dealerships, supported by dedicated sales, service and aftersales training. No New Zealand dealer names or appointments have been announced, so buyers do not yet have a confirmed local sales or service contact.
Until local specifications and pricing are published, figures or equipment reported for China should not be treated as a guide to what New Zealand customers will receive. The launch reporting does not establish a New Zealand-specific comparison with named rivals.
