Rolling back an NVIDIA driver is a valid diagnostic and workaround when G-SYNC stops engaging immediately after an update, but current evidence does not show that the two newest drivers universally broke G-SYNC on every RTX 3070 system. For the incident discussed here, the relevant releases were 610.88 (July 28, 2026) and 610.74 (July 7, 2026). NVIDIA documented frame-pacing changes in this driver family, while user reports describe tearing and stutter after updating. That combination makes a driver regression or driver/display interaction plausible—not proven.
What the “latest two drivers” actually were
Driver labels become ambiguous as soon as NVIDIA publishes another release. At the August 16–18, 2026 cutoff for this incident, the two versions were:
| Driver | Release date | Relevant evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 610.88 | July 28, 2026 | NVIDIA listed an improvement to frame pacing in certain DirectX 11 games when Smooth Motion is used with G-SYNC. This is a targeted change, not confirmation of a universal G-SYNC failure. NVIDIA 610.88 release notes |
| 610.74 | July 7, 2026 | The preceding release in the reported sequence. Verify the exact archive entry before downloading. NVIDIA driver archive |
NVIDIA’s 610.62 page, released June 16, 2026, lists an earlier G-SYNC frame-pacing fix for certain monitors, marked “[Ada].” That qualification does not establish a specific RTX 3070 (Ampere) defect. The desktop RTX 3070 is supported by that driver branch and by current GeForce drivers. NVIDIA 610.62 details
An RTX 3070 owner has reported G-SYNC stopping after a driver update, with tearing and stutter returning even though the NVIDIA Control Panel showed G-SYNC enabled. That is useful evidence that the scenario occurs, but it is an anecdotal report rather than proof of a release-wide bug. User report

What “G-SYNC broken” can mean
G-SYNC synchronizes display refresh with GPU frame output to reduce tearing and stutter on a compatible variable-refresh display. NVIDIA G-SYNC overview A failure may present as:
- G-SYNC disappearing from NVIDIA Control Panel.
- G-SYNC remaining selectable but not engaging in games.
- Tearing, uneven frame pacing, flicker, or black screens.
- G-SYNC working in exclusive fullscreen but not borderless mode.
- The monitor reverting to a fixed refresh rate.
- A problem limited to one game, overlay, or feature such as Smooth Motion.
These symptoms do not all have the same cause. Establish whether the problem is global before changing drivers.
Rule out monitor, connection, and configuration problems first
Check the monitor and cable
- Enable VRR/G-SYNC in the monitor’s on-screen display.
- Use the connection type recommended by the monitor manufacturer; DisplayPort is common for high-refresh PC displays.
- Try another DisplayPort cable and another RTX 3070 output.
- Temporarily disconnect secondary monitors and make the G-SYNC display primary.
- Use the monitor’s native resolution and advertised refresh rate.
- Disable monitor overclocking, custom resolutions, MBR/ULMB-style modes, and HDR temporarily.
- Check the manufacturer’s firmware page.
A separate RTX 3070 troubleshooting report found that changing the GPU’s DisplayPort output resolved stutter and frame skips, showing why a rollback alone cannot prove a driver defect. DisplayPort troubleshooting report

NVIDIA provides a G-SYNC firmware tool for supported displays. Firmware updates carry real risk: an interrupted update can disable or damage the monitor. NVIDIA G-SYNC firmware tool
Separate global failures from game-specific failures
Test at least two games or a known moving 3D scene. Compare exclusive fullscreen and borderless modes, and test with overlays disabled. If only one title fails, investigate its profile, V-SYNC setting, frame generation or Smooth Motion interaction, shader cache, and recent game updates before blaming the display driver. NVIDIA’s 610.88 note specifically concerns certain DirectX 11/Smooth Motion combinations.
Verify that G-SYNC is configured and engaging
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel and choose Display → Set up G-SYNC.
- Enable Enable G-SYNC/G-SYNC Compatible.
- Select Fullscreen mode or Windowed and fullscreen mode, matching the way you test games.
- Select the intended monitor and make it the primary display if multiple monitors are connected.
- Open Manage 3D settings and set Monitor Technology to G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible, as appropriate.
- Click Apply.
- Use Display → Display the indicator for G-SYNC, where available, then launch a game and move the camera through a scene with visible motion.
NVIDIA’s setup and variable-refresh requirements are documented in its variable-refresh guide and Manage 3D Settings reference. A G-SYNC Compatible display is not identical to a native G-SYNC display; certification, firmware, and behavior can differ.

Roll back safely
Option 1: Windows Device Manager
Use this least-destructive method when Windows still retains the previous package.
- Press Win + X and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click the RTX 3070, and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver.
- Choose a reason, confirm, and restart.
Microsoft says the button is unavailable when no previous driver is stored and that administrator privileges are required. Its troubleshooting guide also recommends checking whether Task Manager flickers, which can help distinguish a display-driver problem from an incompatible application. Option 2: Install a known-good NVIDIA package manually
- Record the installed version in NVIDIA Control Panel → Help → System Information or in the NVIDIA App.
- Download the older package from NVIDIA’s official driver search/archive. Do not use an unverified executable link.
- Match desktop versus notebook RTX 3070, Windows 10 versus Windows 11, 64-bit architecture, package type, language, and WHQL or hotfix status.
- Temporarily disconnect the internet if Windows repeatedly replaces the selected driver.
- Run the installer, choose Custom installation, and select Perform a clean installation if offered.
- Install only components needed for the test, restart, and reconfigure G-SYNC.

When a deeper clean is justified
Use a cleanup utility such as Display Driver Uninstaller only when a normal rollback or clean NVIDIA installation fails, options remain missing, installation was interrupted, or several package types have left the system inconsistent. It is not mandatory for every rollback.
- Download the desired NVIDIA driver first.
- Create a restore point or backup.
- Follow the utility vendor’s current Safe Mode procedure.
- Remove the NVIDIA driver, reboot, and install the downloaded package.
- Prevent Windows from immediately replacing it during testing if necessary.
Do not delete random NVIDIA folders or registry keys manually. For a laptop RTX 3070, prefer the manufacturer’s customized package when required by its display routing or Advanced Optimus implementation.
Run a controlled A/B test
Change one variable at a time. Record the driver and Windows build, monitor model and firmware, cable and GPU port, resolution, refresh rate, G-SYNC mode, V-SYNC, HDR, Smooth Motion, frame cap, overlays, and game mode. Reproduce the fault on the newer driver, roll back without changing hardware or game settings, and repeat the same scene. If possible, reinstall the newer driver afterward. A problem that returns on the newer package and disappears on the older one is strong evidence of a driver interaction, but it can still reflect a changed profile, Windows Update, game update, monitor handshake, or cable state.

Interpret the result
| Result | Most likely interpretation |
|---|---|
| G-SYNC returns after rollback in several games | A driver regression or driver/display interaction is plausible. |
| G-SYNC returns after changing GPU port or cable | Connection, port, or handshake problem is more likely. |
| Only one game remains affected | Game profile, update, rendering mode, overlay, or feature interaction. |
| G-SYNC option disappears entirely | Monitor detection, connection, installation, or hybrid-graphics issue. |
| Clean reinstall changes nothing | Investigate monitor firmware, Windows, display routing, cable, or hardware. |
| Resetting settings fixes the newer driver | A corrupted profile or changed configuration rather than a core driver defect. |
When to stay rolled back—and when to move forward
Stay on the older driver temporarily if it restores reproducible operation and the current driver is unusable for your games. Re-test after a newer NVIDIA release, because an older package may lack fixes for new games, applications, security issues, or compatibility problems. Do not keep changing drivers indefinitely: once the same behavior survives multiple versions, focus on the monitor, firmware, cable, Windows build, display routing, or GPU hardware.
For future incidents, replace “latest two” with the exact driver numbers and release dates involved. NVIDIA publishes releases frequently, and desktop and notebook RTX 3070 packages are not interchangeable.
