Gabe Newell left Harvard before graduating, worked at Microsoft for 13 years, then co-founded Valve with Mike Harrington in 1996, according to secondary reporting. Valve’s teams went on to make games including Left 4 Dead and Dota 2, as well as Steam. Newell helped lead the company, but that does not mean he personally created each game.
Who is Gabe Newell?
Gabe Newell is a Valve co-founder whose career connects the company’s early game development with its later work on Steam. Valve’s official biography documents his Microsoft career and says he started Valve afterward; Tech Times reports that he attended Harvard and left before graduating. The Harvard detail is secondary reporting, not a claim established by Valve’s biography.
What did Newell do before Valve?
Valve says Newell spent 13 years at Microsoft in its Systems, Applications, and Advanced Technology divisions. His responsibilities included running program management for the first two Windows releases, starting Microsoft’s multimedia division, and leading work on the Information Highway PC. Valve’s account describes those roles as preceding his move to start the company.
Tech Times reports that Newell left Harvard before graduating and began working at Microsoft in 1983. It also reports that he and fellow Microsoft employee Mike Harrington left to establish Valve in 1996. These education and founding details come from secondary reporting; Valve’s own biography focuses on his Microsoft work.

Did Gabe Newell create Left 4 Dead and Dota 2?
Valve’s company page lists Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, and Dota 2 among its games and describes the company’s work this way: “At Valve we make games, Steam, and hardware.” Valve says its debut title, Half-Life, was released in 1998. The company credits the game with more than 50 game-of-the-year awards; that is Valve’s own figure.
The distinction matters: Newell co-founded and helped lead Valve, while Valve’s teams developed and released its games. The available company materials establish Valve’s catalog, not that Newell personally created every title in it.

How did Valve move from Half-Life to multiplayer games and Steam?
In a 2014 interview with The Washington Post, Newell described Valve’s strategy as a response to a fast-changing game industry. He recalled that Valve could have focused on single-player Half-Life sequels, but chose to try multiplayer games instead. He also said some employees thought Steam was a bad idea while the Steam team pursued it. These are Newell’s retrospective explanations of the company’s choices, not proof that one decision alone accounts for Valve’s later success.
“When we started out we were a single-player video game company that could have been really successful just doing Half-Life sequel after Half-Life sequel, but we collectively said let’s try to make multi-player games even though there’s never been a commercial successful multi-player game.”

In the same interview, Newell explained why Valve avoided fixed titles and organizational structures as it adapted:
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.“The set of those requirements led to decisions about not having titles, not having organization structures, and things like that because as useful as they are in the short-term in the long-term they really end up hurting you a lot.”
What do the historical Steam and Dota 2 figures mean?
The Washington Post reported 65 million Steam users in its January 3, 2014 profile. That is a historical figure, not a current user count.
In a Valve-hosted PC Gamer interview published October 29, 2011, Newell said he had played Dota 2 for about 800 hours. This was his personal playtime at the time, not a statistic about players generally or a current figure. He also described how a match can prompt a player to make and revise plans.
