GALAK-Z: The Dimensional is a tactical, physics-driven space shooter for players who enjoy mastering demanding combat systems—and can tolerate a roguelite structure where death may make progress feel costly. Its distinctive appeal is learning how to maneuver around enemies and use the environment, not simply aiming and firing. The same challenge that makes success satisfying is also the game’s clearest risk: repeated deaths can turn a compelling fight into a frustrating loop.
What kind of game is GALAK-Z?
17-BIT frames GALAK-Z as a retro-styled space shooter drawing on 1980s arcade games and Japanese science-fiction anime. Steam describes it as an anime-inspired, single-player 2D space-combat game with procedurally generated worlds. The developer highlights physics-based movement, responsive controls, AI-controlled enemies, modular power-ups and a voiced adventure. Those features point to a shooter built around positioning and adapting to encounters, rather than a straightforward arcade game about keeping the fire button down.
In practice, the central question for a prospective player is whether tactical maneuvering and learning enemy behavior sound enjoyable enough to balance a demanding roguelite structure. The available descriptions establish the intended systems, but do not substitute for hands-on testing of a particular platform or edition.
Why the combat appeals—and where the difficulty bites
Learning the fight
Physics-driven movement gives maneuvering a tactical role: players have to think about where they are in relation to enemies, not just which direction to shoot. AI-controlled opponents and modular upgrades add further variables. The developer’s description supports the idea of combat with interacting systems, though it does not establish that controls or performance are identical across platforms.

This is the game’s strongest fit for players who like improving through observation: recognizing how enemies behave, adjusting their approach and making better use of available tools. The anime-inspired presentation and arcade-shooter lineage give that combat a clear identity, but do not make its difficulty more forgiving.
The cost of repeated failure
Difficulty is a genuine dividing line in the review record. Gaming Age’s August 11, 2015 review, reproduced on Metacritic, called the game “one of the most unique titles I’ve played on my PS4 this year, and certainly one of the most challenging.” God is a Geek’s August 24, 2015 review, also reproduced there, took the opposing view: “For all the positives, a game you want to uninstall every time you die just isn’t good, and for that reason Galak-Z isn’t worth your time.”

Those reactions describe the core tradeoff rather than a minor caveat: a player who sees each attempt as a chance to understand the combat may enjoy the challenge, while someone who finds repeated death dispiriting may not. The retrieved sources do not establish a complete, platform-by-platform account of how progression or death penalties differ, so it is safest not to assume every edition handles them identically.

The figures offer useful context, not a substitute for the fit question: the game’s tactical combat has drawn praise, while the consequences of its difficulty have also been a point of criticism.
GALAK-Z: The Dimensional and GALAK-Z: The Void are not the same review case
GALAK-Z: The Void has its own release and should not inherit the original game’s Metascore. Metacritic’s retrieved page lists The Void as released March 26, 2019, on PC, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Its displayed critic coverage is below the threshold for an aggregate score, and the page shows six user ratings. That is too little critic coverage to offer a direct score comparison with the original game’s aggregate.

Nintendo Life’s April 2, 2019 review of The Void likewise highlights satisfying space combat and the 1980s aesthetic, while warning that the high difficulty and punishing death policy will not suit everyone. That review is evidence about The Void, not a performance test or proof that every platform edition behaves alike. The available sources do not establish a reliable platform performance comparison or a complete account of the content and progression differences between editions.

17-BIT’s developer page currently lists Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Oculus as purchase platforms. Steam’s listing identifies the original game as developed and published by 17-BIT and gives its release date as October 29, 2015. The developer page does not specify which edition is available on each listed platform, and these listings do not establish a physical release. Check the relevant storefront in your region to confirm the edition currently offered.

Is GALAK-Z worth playing?
The original GALAK-Z: The Dimensional is most promising for players who want a space shooter with tactical, physics-driven maneuvering and are willing to learn through a steep challenge. Its anime-inspired style and systems-rich combat distinguish it from a more conventional shooter. If repeated failure tends to overwhelm the satisfaction of mastering a game, the same death loop that some reviewers found compelling may instead be a reason to pass.
For The Void, make the decision using reviews and edition details specific to that release rather than relying on the original’s aggregate score. In either case, confirm the platform and version on the storefront before buying: the sources establish platform families, but not a dependable like-for-like comparison of editions or performance.
