Yes—the 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition Xbox Series X is a real console, but it did not just launch. Microsoft announced it in June 2024 and said it would be available in limited quantities in select markets from November 15, 2024. It remains listed in Microsoft’s U.S. catalog, but listings checked in August 2026 showed mixed stock signals. Microsoft’s U.S. reference price is $799.99; confirm local availability and the final checkout price before buying.
Current U.S. price and availability
As of the retailer listings checked in August 2026, Microsoft’s U.S. catalog showed the Galaxy Black Special Edition at $799.99. That is a reference price, not a guarantee that it is in stock or available for delivery to your address: one Microsoft listing said out of stock, while other Microsoft pages continued to list the console. Check the [Microsoft Store’s Xbox catalog](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/b/xbox) for the current status in your area.
Other listings were not better evidence of normal availability. Walmart’s surfaced listing was out of stock. Best Buy had a product page, but the price shown was about $1,498—nearly twice Microsoft’s reference price. Treat that as an unusually expensive listing, not the console’s normal value, and check who the seller is before considering it.

Microsoft originally announced a U.S. launch price of $599.99 in 2024. That is historical pricing, not the current U.S. reference price. Prices and stock differ by country; the U.S. listing does not establish availability elsewhere. Microsoft’s launch announcement specified limited quantities in select markets, and regional prices have also changed: its May 2025 documents listed €699.99 in Europe, £589.99 in the U.K. and A$1,049 in Australia. Check your country’s Xbox or Microsoft Store listing rather than converting the U.S. price.

A product page by itself does not mean a console is ready to ship. Before paying, verify that the item is new or refurbished as advertised, who sells and ships it, the delivery estimate, return terms, warranty, and whether the matching controller is included.

What is different from the standard Xbox Series X?

The main practical difference is storage: the special edition has twice the advertised internal capacity. The design and matching controller are the other distinguishing features. Microsoft describes it as having the same speed, performance and features as the Series X, so this is not a performance upgrade. It does not have a faster processor, stronger graphics hardware, or a higher frame-rate ceiling than the standard Series X.
Microsoft’s [Series X specifications](https://www.xbox.com/en-US/consoles/xbox-series-x) describe the platform as targeting true 4K gaming and up to 120 FPS, with a custom AMD Zen 2 CPU, RDNA 2 GPU rated at 12 TFLOPS and 52 compute units, and 16GB of GDDR6 memory. Those are Series X platform capabilities, not advantages unique to the Galaxy Black edition; actual resolution and frame rate vary by game.

Storage: what 2TB does—and doesn’t—mean
Two terabytes is the advertised SSD capacity, not the amount of free space available for games. System software and reserved space reduce what you can use. Even so, the larger drive can be useful if you keep many large games installed, share the console with others, or dislike uninstalling and reinstalling titles.
If you later need more space, Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Cards are designed to match the internal storage performance. USB external drives are another supported option, but they are not equivalent for running every optimized Series X|S game directly. Is the $150 premium worth it?
At the Microsoft U.S. prices cited above, the Galaxy Black model costs $150 more than the $649.99 standard 1TB disc-drive Series X. It costs $200 more than the $599.99 1TB Digital Edition, which has no optical drive. The premium buys extra internal storage and the special-edition finish and controller—not better gameplay performance.
- Consider it if you want a disc drive, expect to keep a large library installed, and value the Galaxy Black design or matching controller. It may also suit a buyer who would otherwise buy a standard console and add storage later; compare the total cost of that setup in your region.
- Choose the standard 1TB Series X if you want the same general Series X performance and disc-drive capability for less, and can manage with less internal storage or add capacity later.
- Choose the Digital Edition only if you buy digitally and do not need physical games or UHD Blu-ray playback.
- Skip the upgrade if your current Series X works well and its storage is enough, or if your main reason for buying is to get higher frame rates or better graphics.
New, refurbished and marketplace listings are not interchangeable
Microsoft has also listed a certified-refurbished Galaxy Black model. That is a separate condition from a new console, and stock and pricing can differ. A refurbished listing surfaced at $679.99 but was marked out of stock in the checked results. Read the condition and warranty terms on the [refurbished product page](https://www.xbox.com/en-US/consoles/xbox-series-x/2tb-galaxy-black-special-edition-refurbished), and decide whether any discount is worth accepting refurbished hardware. It may be a poor fit for a gift or for a collector who wants a new retail unit and packaging.
For a new console, compare any offer with Microsoft’s $799.99 U.S. reference price and check seller identity, condition, warranty and return policy. A dramatic markup—such as the roughly $1,498 Best Buy listing surfaced in the August 2026 check—is difficult to justify on the basis of the console’s hardware: the Galaxy Black edition has the same Series X performance as the less expensive standard model.
Bottom line
The Galaxy Black Special Edition is a genuine 2024 Series X variant, not a new generation or a faster console. At or near Microsoft’s $799.99 U.S. reference price, it can make sense for buyers who want 2TB of advertised storage, a disc drive and the distinctive design. If stock is unavailable or the price is heavily inflated, the $649.99 standard 1TB Series X is the more straightforward value choice. Check your regional store and the exact seller before treating any listing as an available new console.
