First find out where the controller stops working: Windows may not detect it, Windows may detect it without receiving input, or a particular game may be ignoring it. Test the controller in Windows before changing game settings or installing software; that split usually points to the right fix.
Start with the quick checks
Before changing drivers or installing a remapper, rule out the common physical and connection problems:
- Turn the controller on and charge it or replace its batteries.
- If using USB, try a known-good data-capable cable. Some cables charge a controller but do not carry data.
- Connect directly to the PC, not through a hub, dock, monitor, or extension. Try another USB port; on a desktop, a rear motherboard port is a useful test.
- Disconnect the controller from consoles, phones, tablets, and other PCs. Restart the controller and PC.
- If possible, test the controller on another computer or console. That helps distinguish a PC problem from a faulty controller.
Microsoft’s basic input-device troubleshooting likewise recommends checking power, cables, ports, and hubs before moving on to software fixes.

On Windows 10 or 11, press Windows + R, type joy.cpl, and press Enter. Select the controller, choose Properties, then open the Test tab. Move both sticks, press the buttons, and test the triggers.

- The controller is not listed: Windows has not exposed it as a game controller. Check the connection, pairing, controller mode, and Device Manager.
- It is listed, but nothing moves: Reconnect it, try another cable or connection mode, and check for a driver or hardware problem.
- Inputs register correctly: The controller’s basic Windows input path is working. Focus next on Steam, the launcher, or the game.
- Only some controls fail or behave oddly: Check the controller’s mode and calibration, and test it on another PC. A single faulty stick, trigger, or button can be a hardware issue.
Microsoft documents this test in its guide to troubleshooting game controllers. If joy.cpl works but one game does not, repeatedly reinstalling drivers is unlikely to be the right first move.
If Windows does not detect the controller over USB
- Swap in a cable confirmed to transfer data, then try a different USB port and connect directly to the PC.
- Unplug the controller, restart Windows, and reconnect it. Notice whether Windows plays a connection sound or Device Manager refreshes.
- Open Device Manager and inspect Human Interface Devices, Xbox Peripherals (if present), Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Other devices. Look for an unknown device or a yellow warning symbol.
- Open the device’s Properties and read Device status. The error code can indicate whether Windows cannot start the device or has a driver problem.
- If a remapper or driver was installed shortly before the problem began, remove the affected device in Device Manager, use Action > Scan for hardware changes, and restart.
For driver updates, use Windows Update or the controller, PC, motherboard, or adapter maker’s official software when relevant. Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code guide explains common statuses. Do not install a generic “driver updater” or randomly download controller drivers: common USB controllers use Windows’ built-in input support, and unnecessary driver tools can create new problems.
If Bluetooth will not pair or keeps disconnecting
In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices. Confirm Bluetooth is on, remove the controller’s old entry if it is listed, then turn the controller off and pair it again: choose Add device > Bluetooth and put the controller into pairing mode. Windows 10 uses Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.

For a DualSense, PlayStation’s pairing instructions say to turn the controller off, disconnect its USB cable for initial Bluetooth pairing, then hold Create + PS until the light bar flashes. Disconnect it from other devices first if it keeps reconnecting elsewhere. See PlayStation’s DualSense connection guide.
If pairing succeeds but input drops out, charge the controller, move closer to the PC, temporarily disconnect unnecessary Bluetooth devices, and restart Windows. USB 3.x devices can interfere with Bluetooth; try moving the Bluetooth adapter away from them, using a short extension cable, or testing another adapter. Update the Bluetooth driver from the PC or adapter manufacturer if the problem persists. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide covers pairing, range, interference, and drivers.
If the controller works over USB but not Bluetooth, concentrate on pairing, battery, interference, and the PC’s Bluetooth adapter. If it fails over both connections, test it on another PC before blaming Bluetooth.

Check the controller’s PC mode: XInput or DirectInput
Many modern Windows games expect XInput, the interface commonly associated with Xbox-style controls. Some older games and generic gamepads use DirectInput instead. A third-party controller may offer modes for PC, XInput, DirectInput, Android, Switch, or PlayStation. It can appear in Windows yet remain invisible to a game if it is in an incompatible mode.

Check the manufacturer’s manual for the correct mode and switching procedure; there is no universal button combination. Xbox-style button prompts on a PlayStation controller often mean software is translating its input to XInput, not that the controller has changed. Steam explains that game compatibility can depend on whether a title expects XInput or DirectInput in its controller troubleshooting guidance.
If the controller works in Windows but not Steam
- Open Steam > Settings > Controller and check whether Steam lists the controller. Labels can change between client updates.
- Use Steam’s controller test or input preview, if available, to confirm buttons and sticks register.
- Exit and restart Steam, then relaunch the game after the controller is connected.
- For the affected game, try its per-title Steam Input setting or layout. If the game has native support, compare behavior with Steam Input enabled and disabled; do not assume one setting is right for every controller and game.
- Temporarily close other remapping software, such as DS4Windows, reWASD, x360ce, manufacturer utilities, macro tools, or overlays. Restart the game after changing input settings.
Steam’s troubleshooting advice includes restarting the client and isolating other input devices or conflicting programs. A remapper and Steam Input can both translate the same controller, making the game see duplicate devices or no usable input. If two entries appear, or menus move twice, disable one translation path before changing more settings.
For a non-Steam game, adding its executable to Steam as a non-Steam game and testing Steam Input may help, but it is not guaranteed to work with every launcher or anti-cheat system. Avoid running several emulators at once.

Try USB first to simplify diagnosis. Xbox controllers can also connect over Bluetooth when the controller and PC support it, or with a compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter. Pair Bluetooth by holding the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox logo flashes, then add it from Windows’ Bluetooth settings. Microsoft describes these connection options in its Xbox controller PC guide.

If Windows detects the controller but it disconnects or behaves inconsistently, check its battery and consider a firmware update through the Xbox Accessories app. Steam’s guidance points Windows users to that app and says to connect the controller by USB during the update: Xbox controller firmware instructions. Firmware cannot fix a damaged connector or worn control.

DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers can connect to Windows by USB or Bluetooth, but support varies by game and launcher. Some games recognize PlayStation controllers directly; others work best when Steam Input translates them; some XInput-oriented non-Steam games may need a compatibility layer such as DS4Windows. PlayStation’s PC gaming support page has connection and support information.
- Native game support: Prefer it when the game supports the controller and its features. Support for PlayStation button prompts, gyro, haptics, and adaptive triggers is not universal.
- Steam Input: Often the simplest route for Steam games. Translation can improve compatibility, but may change prompts or prevent some native PlayStation features from being used.
- DS4Windows or another compatibility layer: Consider it when a non-Steam game expects an Xbox-style controller. It adds another software layer, so configure it carefully and do not run it alongside another translator unless needed.
If a DualSense game supports advanced haptics on PC, feature availability depends on the game and connection method; some supported features may require USB. See PlayStation’s DualSense support details.
For double input—menus moving twice, repeated actions, or two controller entries—close the emulator or disable Steam Input for that game so the title receives only one controller path. DS4Windows documents virtual-controller conflicts and in-game misbehavior.

If it fails in only one game
When the controller passes the Windows test, troubleshoot the title rather than reinstalling the controller driver:
- Open the game’s controller or input settings and enable gamepad support. Choose a suitable preset or restore default bindings.
- Connect the controller before launching the game, then restart the game after changing input settings.
- Try the other Steam Input state (on or off) if you launch through Steam. For another launcher, check its input settings and whether it supports that controller type.
- Disconnect other physical controllers and virtual devices. Some games have limited device support; Steam notes a four-device limit for XInput devices in its relevant troubleshooting context, not a universal limit across all controller types.
- Check whether the title supports PlayStation controllers natively or expects XInput. A translation layer may help, but anti-cheat software can block or object to virtual devices and remappers; follow the game publisher’s guidance.
Some games simply do not support controllers directly, or require support to be enabled in the game. Microsoft notes this possibility in its controller troubleshooting guide.
Sticks drift, triggers misread, or only some inputs work
Check each axis and button in joy.cpl or the game’s controller test. Calibration or a small dead-zone adjustment may help if the readings are slightly off. Steam includes calibration among its controller troubleshooting steps.
Increasing a game’s stick dead zone can reduce minor drift, but use the smallest adjustment that helps: a large dead zone makes aiming less precise. Calibration and software settings cannot repair worn stick sensors, damaged springs, or contamination. If the same axis remains abnormal across connection types or PCs, suspect a physical fault.
When is the controller or cable probably defective?
Hardware is more likely than a Windows setting if the controller fails on more than one PC, with a known-good data cable and port, or over both USB and wireless connections while other controllers work normally. A button or axis that fails consistently, disconnects when the plug moves, or shows visible liquid, impact, connector, or battery damage is also a warning sign. Check warranty or repair options before replacing it.
The PC or software is more likely at fault if another controller works in the same port and game, the problem began after adding a remapper, or the controller works in joy.cpl but not in one launcher. If a known-good cable fixes detection, replace the cable rather than the controller.
