Game Freak confirmed that a third party accessed one of its servers without authorization in August 2024 and that names and company email addresses for 2,606 employees and others were exposed. Separately, news outlets reported that purported Pokémon development materials were circulating online, but Game Freak’s notice did not confirm those files or their contents. The two stories should not be treated as equally verified.
Was Game Freak hacked?
Yes. In a notice dated October 10, 2024, Game Freak said unauthorized access to a server by a third party had occurred in August and led to a leak of personal information. Contemporary reporting said the company publicly acknowledged the incident on October 13. Game Freak did not identify the attacker or explain how the server was accessed.

The company’s notice, an English rendering reproduced by Nintendo Everything, stated: “Game Freak Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Satoshi Tajiri; hereinafter referred to as “our company”) has discovered that personal information of employees and others was leaked in connection with unauthorized access to our server by a third party in August 2024.”
What information did Game Freak confirm was leaked?
Game Freak said names and company email addresses for 2,606 employees and others were exposed. The affected group included contract workers and former employees. That figure refers to people whose personal information was affected; it is not a count of all files allegedly taken or a measure of the amount of game-development data involved.

What was reported in the Pokémon game-data leak?
Contemporary reports described purported Game Freak materials circulating online, including source code, development documents, beta designs and project information. The Record from Recorded Future News and BleepingComputer covered the claims while distinguishing them from the employee-data breach; their reporting noted that Game Freak had not confirmed the game-data portion and that the authenticity of the purported materials was unclear. The Record and BleepingComputer provide that contemporaneous coverage.

Those reports do not make every circulating claim an established fact. Game Freak’s notice addressed exposed personal information, not a catalog of game files. Claims about particular unreleased projects, codenames or source-code contents should therefore be described as allegations unless independently confirmed by a reliable primary source. Nintendo Life’s coverage likewise reported the game-material claims separately from the company’s statement.
