To use a gamepad in Call of Duty: Mobile, pair it with your phone first, then open the game and select Gear → Controller → Settings → Enable Controller Support. Controller play is supported in Multiplayer and Battle Royale; several lobby and configuration screens still require touch input.
Activision officially lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation DUALSHOCK 4 (excluding first-generation units), PlayStation 5 DualSense, and Backbone One controllers. Other gamepads may work, but Activision does not officially support them.
Which controllers does CoD Mobile officially support?
Activision’s current supported-controller list is the safest buying and troubleshooting reference: official controller list.
| Controller family | Status | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Official Xbox One controller | Officially supported | Use an official Xbox model; Xbox 360 is not included on Activision’s list. |
| Official Xbox Series X|S controller | Officially supported | Bluetooth-capable models are the simplest choice for phones. |
| PlayStation DUALSHOCK 4 | Officially supported | First-generation DUALSHOCK 4 controllers are excluded. |
| PlayStation 5 DualSense | Officially supported | The listed support is for DualSense; do not assume DualSense Edge or other variants are covered. |
| Backbone One | Officially supported | Buy the Lightning or USB-C version that matches your phone. |
“Works with iPhone” or “works with Android” describes phone compatibility, not necessarily CoD Mobile support. Generic Bluetooth pads and products from Razer, GameSir, 8BitDo, and other brands can connect to a phone yet fail to appear in the game. Input modes such as iOS, Android, XInput, and DirectInput can also change the result. Treat those devices as unverified unless the exact model, phone, firmware, and game version are documented as working.

Before you start
- Install the current game build from the official CoD Mobile support portal and finish any in-game download.
- Activision’s current minimum guidance lists 2 GB of RAM, Android 6.0 or later, or iOS 15.0 or later, plus a network connection. Requirements can change; check the current device page.
- Charge the controller and disconnect it from a console, computer, tablet, or another phone.
- Install available phone, game, and controller-firmware updates.
- For a telescopic controller, remove a thick case if the phone cannot seat fully. For a wired model, confirm the connector and operating-system compatibility.
- Temporarily move away from other Bluetooth devices if pairing repeatedly fails.
How to connect an Xbox controller
Put the controller into pairing mode
Press and hold the Xbox button and the controller’s Sync button until the controller vibrates or its light starts flashing. This is the sequence in Activision’s pairing instructions.
Pair it with iPhone, iPad, or Android
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- On iPhone or iPad, tap the controller under available devices. On Android, use Pair new device if that option is shown; menu names vary by manufacturer.
- Wait until the controller is shown as connected before opening CoD Mobile.
How to connect a PS4 or PS5 controller
PS4 DUALSHOCK 4
Hold Share + PS together until the light bar flashes, then select the controller in the phone’s Bluetooth menu. First-generation DUALSHOCK 4 units are not on Activision’s supported list.
PS5 DualSense
DualSense is officially listed by Activision. Its current CoD Mobile pairing FAQ does not provide a separate DualSense button sequence; use Sony’s current controller manual for the standard Bluetooth procedure, then complete the same phone Bluetooth steps above. Do not treat that manufacturer procedure as an additional Activision instruction.

How to connect a Backbone One
Backbone One connects directly through the phone rather than pairing like a conventional Bluetooth pad. Insert the phone into the matching Lightning or USB-C model and ensure the connector is fully seated. Backbone lists its current models at backbone.com/products. Check the connector, phone dimensions, and case clearance before buying; a Lightning model is not interchangeable with a USB-C model.

Enable controller support in CoD Mobile
- Launch Call of Duty: Mobile after the phone reports the controller as connected.
- Tap the Gear icon on the main screen.
- Open Controller, then Settings.
- Turn on Enable Controller Support.
Pairing in the operating system alone is not enough. Activision documents this order—pair first, reopen the game, and enable the in-game switch—in its controller setup guide.
Start a match and know what will remain touch-controlled
Enter a Multiplayer or Battle Royale match to test the sticks, triggers, and buttons. Activision says controllers are primarily intended for matches. The lobby, settings, loadouts, matchmaking screens, and other non-match interfaces can still require the phone’s native touch controls; that behavior is not necessarily a connection failure. See Activision’s explanation of controller use in CoD Mobile.

The Controller menu can be used to adjust controls by game mode. Test aim and camera sensitivity, ADS behavior, button layout, trigger behavior, vibration, and any dead-zone options your current game build exposes before entering a serious match.
How controller matchmaking works
Controller play changes the matchmaking pool. A solo controller player is matched with controller users, and a party containing a controller player is matched as a controller party, according to Activision’s matchmaking guidance. This is an expected consequence of enabling controller play, not an error in your account.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Controller not working? Use the symptom that matches your problem
| Symptom | First fixes |
|---|---|
| Controller does not appear in Bluetooth | Turn it off, re-enter pairing mode, disconnect it from other devices, toggle Bluetooth, restart the phone, remove the old pairing entry, charge the controller, and try again. Check the manufacturer’s firmware updater. |
| Phone sees it, but CoD Mobile does not | Fully close the game; pair the controller first; reopen CoD Mobile; go to Gear → Controller → Settings; enable Enable Controller Support; test inside Multiplayer or Battle Royale rather than the lobby. |
| It works in a match but not the lobby | This is documented behavior. Use touch controls for menus and other non-match screens. |
| It worked previously, then stopped | Reconnect it after reopening the game, forget and re-pair it, restart both devices, install game and operating-system updates, and check controller firmware. Activision notes that a controller can disconnect after the device is left idle. |
| Backbone will not fit or connect | Remove the phone case, confirm the connector version, and reseat the phone fully. A Lightning and USB-C Backbone are different products. |
| Third-party buttons are wrong or missing | Use the model’s documented mobile or XInput mode, close and reopen CoD Mobile after changing it, and test an officially supported controller. A phone-compatible profile is not proof of native CoD Mobile support. |
Mapping apps and input overlays are not a substitute for native support. They can add compatibility, security, and account-risk questions, so do not make them the default fix for an unsupported controller.

Should you buy a controller for CoD Mobile?
Choose an officially listed family when certainty matters
If you already own a supported Xbox, PlayStation, or Backbone controller, try it before spending money. If you are buying specifically for CoD Mobile, Activision’s list gives the lowest support uncertainty.
Bluetooth Xbox or PlayStation controller
- Advantages: officially supported, usable with multiple devices, and comfortable for long sessions.
- Trade-offs: you need a phone clip or stand for handheld play, wireless pairing consumes battery, and the setup is less compact.
Official Xbox models are listed at Xbox Accessories. Prices and editions vary, so treat the vendor’s current listing as the authority rather than a permanent price claim.
Backbone One
- Advantages: integrated handheld layout, no separate phone clip, direct connection, and explicit Activision support.
- Trade-offs: connector and case fit are critical, and it draws power from the phone instead of behaving like a conventional standalone wireless pad.
Backbone’s U.S. product page showed list-price signals of $99.99 for Backbone One and PlayStation Edition and $109.99 for Xbox Edition when checked; prices can change. Do not assume Backbone Pro has the same Activision status unless it appears on the current supported list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBest Value
- Officially licensed by Xbox. Bluetooth connection. Supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers - Upgraded. Robust and long-lasting. Offering higher precision and sensitivity.
- Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.
- Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on mobile.
Third-party telescopic controllers
Razer Kishi, GameSir, 8BitDo, and similar products may appeal because of their shape or features, but Activision does not establish blanket support for every model. Verify the exact controller, phone, operating system, firmware, input mode, and current CoD Mobile behavior before purchase. “Compatible with Android” or “compatible with iPhone” alone is not enough.
Bluetooth versus wired connections
Activision says most controllers pair over Bluetooth and that some devices may support a direct wired connection. It does not promise that every cable, wired controller, adapter, or phone combination will work. Confirm the specific hardware before treating wired play as supported.
