When Ultimate is worth choosing
You want new releases on launch day
Ultimate is the relevant choice if playing selected new releases on day one matters to you. Xbox describes the benefit as access to new games on release, including Xbox-published and third-party titles. Premium does not include day-one access; Xbox says new Xbox-published games join Premium within 12 months of launch. That is a stated timing window, not a guarantee that every release will enter the catalog.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
You will use the included services
Ultimate includes Fortnite Crew, EA Play, and Ubisoft+ Classics; Premium does not. Their value depends on whether you actually use them. Compare the current price difference in your region with the benefits you expect to use, rather than treating every included service as savings.
You need more of the listed cloud allowance or quality
In the US comparison observed October 8, 2026, Xbox listed 15 hours per month for Ultimate versus 10 for Premium, and up to 1440p for Ultimate on supported titles and devices. Cloud gaming also depends on a supported device and region; Xbox says availability and limits can vary. Confirm your device, location, and current terms before making cloud access the deciding factor.

When Premium is the better fit
Premium can make more sense if the games you want are already in its catalog, you do not need day-one releases or the three Ultimate partner benefits, and its current local price suits your budget. Xbox lists cloud gaming, online console multiplayer, and in-game benefits for both plans, so those features alone do not distinguish Ultimate from Premium in the US comparison.
Check the actual titles you play in the live catalog rather than choosing by the headline game count. Counts and availability change, and a plan’s total does not establish that a particular game is included.

Do you need a subscription for online multiplayer?
Both Premium and Ultimate include online console multiplayer according to Xbox’s comparison. However, Xbox also says free-to-play games are open to all Xbox players for multiplayer, so a subscription is not required for every online multiplayer experience. Check the requirements for the specific game you play.
