Its proposed GPlay platform promised developers 90% of gross revenue, payouts within 60 hours, and blockchain features for tournaments and digital items. But the evidence supports “announced, integrated and tested” far more strongly than “launched and established.”
The story began with a GamesBeat report published August 17, 2017. As of August 16, 2026, no reliable evidence in the available record verifies a currently operating public GPlay storefront that displaced either major platform.
What GameCredits was building
GameCredits was a cryptocurrency and gaming-platform initiative. The company said GAME launched in February 2014 and was intended to serve as a payment currency for games and in-game content. That description is a company-origin claim, not independent evidence of widespread adoption.
The proposed store appeared under several related names:

| Name | How it was used |
|---|---|
| GameCredits Mobile Store | Early announcement name for the mobile-game marketplace. |
| GPlay | Later name for the store and developer platform. |
| G Store | Name used by GamesBeat when describing the planned Indian opening. |
These labels appear to describe stages or branding of one broader initiative rather than clearly separate products. The wider proposal also included wallets, GShare, esports functions and a virtual marketplace.
How the proposed business model differed from Apple and Google
A larger announced developer share
GameCredits said GPlay would return 90% of gross revenue to developers. At the time, the commonly cited major-store arrangement gave developers about 70%. The 90% figure was an announced commercial term, not verified payout data. It was reported in the GameCredits-Unity announcement.
Faster payments
The same announcement claimed developers would be paid within 60 hours, rather than waiting 60 days. Again, this was a promise about intended operations, not a demonstrated production performance.
Crypto-native purchases
Users were supposed to buy games and in-game content with GAME. The company presented that payment rail as a way to reduce dependence on Apple and Google billing. In practice, a token payment system also requires users to acquire, store and transfer cryptocurrency before they can make an ordinary game purchase.

A planned Indian launch
GamesBeat reported that GameCredits planned an October opening in India and viewed India, China, Japan and South Korea as major growth opportunities. The company’s 2017 rationale referred to lower credit-card usage and said Google Play was not available in India at that time. That was a historical, company-reported argument; it should not be treated as a description of India’s current app market.
What blockchain and MobileGo were supposed to add
GameCredits’ pitch was broader than a cheaper download store. It proposed peer-to-peer matches, decentralized tournaments, esports leaderboards, rewards and trading of digital items. A 2017 announcement described MobileGo, also called MGO, as a token for functions around the store rather than a replacement for GAME.
| Component | Proposed role |
|---|---|
| GAME | Core currency for game and in-game purchases. |
| MGO/MobileGo | Tournament fees, gameplay rewards, player status, discounts and related smart-contract functions. |
| GPlay | Storefront, developer tools and distribution platform. |
| Wallet and backend | Account, token and payment infrastructure. |
The company’s description of MGO and the marketplace appears in this 2017 GameCredits announcement. Its 2018 reports also discussed integrating MGO into wallet and backend systems while moving between Waves-based and Ethereum-based versions.
Blockchain could record token transfers or ownership claims. It did not, by itself, solve catalog curation, malware screening, refunds, parental controls, moderation, customer support, account recovery or the legal status of tournament entry fees and prizes. A store could use a blockchain while remaining centrally governed and operated.

What evidence showed the project was real
There was more than a white paper, but the evidence stops short of proving a successful public launch.
- GamesBeat reported GameCredits’ claim of more than 300 games and 150 developers signed up for launch. Those were announced commitments, not a verified public catalog or active-user count.
- GameCredits announced a Unity integration intended to let developers publish into GPlay from the Unity ecosystem. The announcement establishes the partnership claim, not a maintained production integration.
- Company development reports described payment integration, an app-upload dashboard, game integrations and work on Pixel Wars esports features.
- The May 2018 report described GPlay as moving through development and closed-beta stages after missed deadlines. The June report referred to initial release testing in an internal closed beta.
Those milestones distinguish development work from market adoption. “Signed on,” “integration,” “preview” and “closed beta” do not establish that consumers could freely install a large catalog or that developers were receiving the advertised terms.
Why replacing the mobile-store duopoly was difficult
Distribution and platform access
Apple controls iOS app distribution, making a conventional third-party iPhone store structurally difficult. Android permits more alternative-installation routes, but an independent store still has to persuade users to install it, keep it updated and trust its security.
Network effects
Apple and Google bundle discovery, identity, billing, analytics, reviews, updates and enormous installed bases. A 90% revenue share matters only if a store can deliver enough users and valuable games to offset weaker discovery and support infrastructure.

- Action-packed social deduction game
- No player elimination until a second, shorter phase
- 3 factions: Crew, Agents, & Rivals
Crypto friction and volatility
Users would have needed wallets, token transfers and a way to convert between GAME, MGO and ordinary currency. Token prices can move while a purchase is pending, and losing account credentials or sending funds incorrectly creates support problems uncommon in conventional app stores.
Safety, compliance and governance
A new marketplace would need malware detection, fraud controls, refunds, moderation and parental safeguards. Tournament fees, prizes and tradable items can also raise gambling, money-transmission, securities, consumer-protection and tax issues, depending on jurisdiction. “Decentralized” transaction mechanics do not remove those obligations when a company controls the catalog, wallet service or customer support.
Economics behind the 90% promise
Processing, fraud losses, hosting, compliance, support and user acquisition still cost money. A high developer share could attract studios, but it would not automatically make the store financially sustainable.

What happened to GPlay?
The available record shows prolonged development and changing scope, not a clearly documented public launch followed by established market share. Later GameCredits communications focused on wider blockchain-gaming, NFT and metaverse projects. The current official page presents GAME primarily in connection with Genesis Worlds and does not clearly present a functioning public GPlay storefront: GameCredits’ current GAME page.
Best Value
- Trusted by Families Worldwide – With over 50 million sold, ThinkFun is the world’s leader in brain and logic games.
- Develops critical skills – Builds problem-solving and spatial reasoning skills through fun gameplay and purposeful fidgeting.
- What you get – An addictively fun and colorful pirate-themed set of cube-link brainteasers.
- Clear instructions – Easy to learn with language-free visual instructions. You can start playing immediately.
- A Range of Challenges – Collect all three Block Chain themes with varying difficulty.
The careful conclusion is that GPlay appears to have remained a development-stage or limited-testing project. As of August 16, 2026, public operation of a durable GPlay app store could not be verified. That is different from claiming a definitive shutdown, for which the cited record provides no direct announcement.
How the 2026 landscape changes the comparison
The original pitch anticipated pressure on Apple and Google over fees, billing control and distribution. Google’s US policies changed materially by July 2026. Eligible developers can use alternative billing and external links under applicable programs, and Google says US app listings began becoming available to enrolled third-party Android stores on July 22, 2026. Downloads can still be completed through Google Play in that program, and Google’s service fee continues to apply.
These policy changes make the underlying competitive question more mainstream, but they do not show that GameCredits participated in, benefited from or survived into those programs. Nor do they remove the practical burdens of catalog quality, trust, security, payments and user acquisition.
What the GameCredits story means
GameCredits’ app-store challenge was a real, unusually ambitious product proposal backed by announcements, integration work and closed-beta testing. Its headline claims—90% to developers, 60-hour payouts and hundreds of signed-up games—were promotional targets or commitments, not independently verified operating results.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For users seeking a normal app-store replacement, a stable way to spend money or a mature developer-distribution service, the evidence does not establish that GPlay delivered those outcomes. For technology history, the project is a useful early example of crypto-gaming startups trying to attack app-store economics by combining alternative distribution with tokens, esports and digital ownership.
