Gamepadla’s Polling tool can estimate how often a controller’s changing inputs reach a PC, making it useful for comparing wired, Bluetooth, and receiver modes. It does not measure the full delay from pressing a button to seeing the game respond: treat the result as an operating-system-level report-frequency benchmark, not an end-to-end latency score.
What Gamepadla measures—and what it does not
Polling rate is the approximate frequency at which a controller sends updated state to the host. Gamepadla’s Polling utility estimates it by observing successive changes in analog-stick position and the time between them. Its project documentation describes the result as distinct from conventional input latency: it is not a direct measurement of a physical button press reaching the screen. See the Polling project and its software page.
- Polling rate: How often reports are observed at the host.
- Refresh interval: The time between observed reports; shorter intervals correspond to higher rates.
- Jitter and outliers: Variation in timing and unusually long intervals.
- Input latency: A broader measure. Button-to-detection and button-to-screen latency include additional controller, transport, game, and display delays.
Gamepadla’s controller pages distinguish software polling tests from hardware/electrical latency methods such as Prometheus 82 and GPDL. Those are separate measurements, not prerequisites for the Polling test (Xbox One Controller; ZD-O).
What you need
The simplest documented route is a Windows PC, the Polling utility linked from Gamepadla’s official software page, and a controller Windows exposes to the tool. The project documents XInput and DirectInput support; the software page also lists Switch and DualShock controllers. Detection can still depend on the particular device, driver, connection, and input layer. The project documents USB, Bluetooth, and receiver use, but does not guarantee identical results in every mode (project documentation).

For a cleaner comparison, start with a direct USB connection where practical. Close remappers, overlays, capture tools, and unnecessary background apps; avoid a USB hub for the baseline if you can. For wireless tests, note whether you used Bluetooth or a proprietary receiver and start with a charged controller. Record firmware, Windows build, tool version, connection type, and test date. Gamepadla’s own entries include configuration details such as connection, firmware, operating-system build, program version, and date (Xbox Core Controller; BIGBIG WON Blitz 2 TMR).
How to run the Polling test
- Open Gamepadla’s software page and download the Polling utility offered there. Use the official page rather than an unverified mirror; filenames and interface details can change.
- Connect the controller by USB, Bluetooth, or its receiver. Check that Windows recognizes it and that remapping software is not substituting a virtual device for the physical controller.
- Launch Polling. Select the controller or stick if the installed version asks you to. Selection and automatic-detection controls have changed between releases, so follow the interface in your build (release history).
- Move the chosen stick continuously in a smooth circle near the edge of its range. Keep the motion steady rather than making brief, intermittent movements; the test needs changing stick samples. Avoid forcing the stick hard against its mechanical stop.
- Continue until the test finishes. Record the displayed median and average rate, interval statistics, jitter, and any outliers or late reports shown.
- Run the test at least three times and keep the typical results, not just the highest run. If available, test both sticks.
- Repeat from the beginning for each connection mode you want to compare. A wired, Bluetooth, and receiver result are separate configurations.
How to interpret the numbers
The nominal relationship is rate in Hz ≈ 1,000 ÷ interval in milliseconds. These conversions describe the nominal report interval, not guaranteed controller-to-screen latency:
| Polling rate | Nominal interval |
|---|---|
| 125 Hz | 8 ms |
| 250 Hz | 4 ms |
| 500 Hz | 2 ms |
| 1,000 Hz | 1 ms |
| 2,000 Hz | 0.5 ms |
| 4,000 Hz | 0.25 ms |
| 8,000 Hz | 0.125 ms |
Use the tool’s reported rate as the benchmark result; converting intervals by hand is a way to understand the relationship, not a replacement for the measured distribution.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
- Median rate is a useful indication of the typical observed report frequency. Newer Gamepadla entries show median rate separately from average rate (BIGBIG WON Blitz 2 TMR entry).
- Average rate is more sensitive to unusually long intervals, so read it alongside the median.
- Minimum interval shows a best-case observation, not a sustained rate.
- Maximum interval and outliers can reveal occasional delays or irregular delivery.
- Jitter describes timing variation; a high peak rate with inconsistent timing may be less informative than a stable lower rate.
There is no universal “good” polling-rate cutoff. Compare the result with the controller’s stated specification for that connection mode, then consider stability and the game’s input path. A stable 125 Hz can be ordinary for an older controller; a device advertised at 1,000 Hz merits a closer look if repeated runs consistently land near 125 or 250 Hz. A higher rate shortens the nominal interval, but does not by itself establish lower button latency or better in-game responsiveness.
Compare connection modes fairly
Do not carry a wired result over to Bluetooth or a receiver. Manufacturers’ maximum-rate claims may apply only to a specific mode, firmware, or setting. Gamepadla’s entries illustrate that measurements can differ by connection, and its Xbox One page cautions that operating-system polling figures are not proof of hardware latency (Xbox Core Controller; Xbox One Controller).
Use the same PC, tool build, stick, movement pattern, and background-app conditions when comparing modes. Change one factor at a time and report each mode separately. For a result others can interpret, use this record:

Why a result may differ from the advertised rate
Connection, firmware, and controller mode
A headline rate may describe only wired operation or a particular receiver and firmware setting. Bluetooth can report differently, and a controller’s mode switch can change what Windows sees. Check the manufacturer’s conditions for the claim before treating a lower result as a fault.
Input APIs and virtual devices
XInput, DirectInput, native device paths, and virtual-controller layers can expose different behavior. Steam Input, DS4Windows, reWASD, x360ce, emulator layers, or other remappers may cause the test to observe a virtual controller rather than the physical device. For a baseline, close them and test the controller directly; if you also test your normal remapped setup, label that result separately.
Movement and host-system timing
The test derives its estimate from changing stick input, so short or uneven movements can undermine a run. The project also notes that CPU speed and event processing can affect observed timing. The number therefore describes what the test software observed through the host system, not a laboratory measurement of the controller alone (Polling project; Gamepadla+).

Polling is only one part of response time
Even a controller that reports frequently still has sensor scanning, firmware processing, switch debounce, transport, game input sampling, rendering, and display stages. A high polling rate cannot establish how long the complete chain takes.

The controller is not detected
- Disconnect and reconnect it; for USB, try another port and a known data-capable cable.
- Confirm Windows recognizes the controller and that it is in the intended XInput, DirectInput, or console mode.
- Close remappers and virtual-controller software, then restart the tester.
- Try another connection mode. If the official utility still does not recognize it, Gamepadla+ is a separate implementation worth trying; one failed detection is not proof that the controller is incompatible.
The rate is much lower than expected
- Check whether you are testing Bluetooth when the advertised figure applies to wired or receiver mode.
- Check for a hub, remapper, virtual device, or required controller mode or firmware setting.
- Make sure the stick moved continuously and smoothly for the full run.
- Compare median with average and inspect the interval range for outliers.
Runs vary or contain large delays
Repeat several trials and compare their distributions. Wireless interference, battery-saving behavior, CPU load, background apps, USB power management, and inconsistent stick motion are possible contributors. Do not use one unusually high run as the representative result.

Uploading fails
Upload failure does not invalidate a local test. Save the result where supported or record the displayed measurements manually, then retry when the network is available. The project documents result submission, and its release history notes an upload fix related to unavailable internet connections (Polling releases).

Gamepadla+ for command-line or saved output
Gamepadla+ is a separate open-source fork, not simply another name for the official Polling download. It documents XInput and DirectInput support, GUI operation, command-line testing, and JSON output. Its documented commands include:
gamepadla list
gamepadla test
gamepadla test --stick right
gamepadla test --out data.json
gamepadla test --upload
Its documented GUI flow is to run gamepadla, connect the controller, select Refresh, then Test, and rotate the selected stick slowly near the edge. Installation options and Windows binaries are described on its PyPI page. Because it is a separate implementation, its interface and calculations need not match the official utility exactly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Browser checks for convenience
Gamepadla also has a web testing ecosystem (Gamepadla; test page). Browser APIs, tab state, and operating-system scheduling make a browser check less controlled than a dedicated downloadable benchmark; use it as a quick check rather than assuming it is interchangeable with the Polling utility.
Hardware latency methods
If the question is physical-button or stick movement to an electrical/software response, use a suitable hardware latency method rather than interpreting software polling as end-to-end lag. Gamepadla lists Prometheus 82 and GPDL among its specialist tools, but these are different methods from the Polling utility (Gamepadla software; Xbox One Controller).
