GameRail discontinued its private gaming network on April 18, 2008, according to contemporary reports. The company said the market was not ready to support a standalone network for gaming; that was GameRail’s assessment, not proof that a single factor caused the closure.
What GameRail was
GameRail was a private network service designed to carry online game traffic between players and game servers over dedicated network connections. In a 2006 announcement, Progression Networks, doing business as GameRail, described a direct-connect model for players and game hosts: GameRail’s 2006 company announcement.
A Broadwing filing described plans for private backbone circuits connecting multiple U.S. cities for Progression Networks/GameRail. Lower latency, jitter and packet loss were intended benefits of that network design, not independently verified results for users: Broadwing filing.
When GameRail shut down
Contemporary coverage reports that GameRail ceased operations on April 18, 2008. The archived announcement said the network had been discontinued after a trial. A later Arch Angels Network annual report also records that GameRail ceased operations in 2008, corroborating the year but not adding another explanation for the shutdown.

Why the network closed
In the announcement reproduced by contemporary coverage, the GameRail team wrote: “We believe that latency and network quality will continue to affect the gaming experience and while we are still believers in the GameRail concept, the market does not appear to be ready to support a standalone network for gaming at this time.” The announcement began: “It is with deep regret to announce that the GameRail network has been discontinued at this time.” The wording is attributed to the GameRail team; the available account does not name an individual speaker: contemporary report reproducing the announcement.
Contemporary coverage also discussed the business challenge of persuading enough gamers to pay for a dedicated low-latency service. The available accounts do not establish that willingness to pay—or any other single factor—was the sole cause. The market-readiness explanation is what GameRail itself said.

What the shutdown does—and does not—tell us about performance
GameRail’s proposed distinction was its dedicated routing and interconnection approach, rather than simply sending game traffic across ordinary public-internet routes. But the sources do not establish a representative, independently measured latency improvement across games, regions or internet providers. The intended benefits should not be mistaken for a guaranteed or uniform improvement experienced by every subscriber.
