Windows has no universal switch that forces every game onto one monitor. For the quickest fix, focus the game and press Win + Shift + Left Arrow or Win + Shift + Right Arrow. If the game is exclusive fullscreen, press Alt + Enter first, move it, then restore borderless or fullscreen mode.
For a lasting fix, verify Windows’ display arrangement, choose the intended main display when appropriate, and select the monitor in the game’s own graphics menu. A launcher, saved configuration, dock, GPU arrangement or game engine can override Windows’ normal placement behavior.
What “wrong monitor” can mean
Identify the symptom before changing settings. These problems require different fixes:

- It opens on the right screen but uses an unsuitable resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode or scaling.
- The window is off-screen after a monitor, dock, KVM or cable was disconnected.
- Exclusive fullscreen prevents dragging or normal Windows movement.
- The launcher appears on one display while the game opens on another.
- The game remembers an old monitor after the display topology changes.
- The game appears correctly placed but renders through an unexpected GPU.
- Entering fullscreen, borderless mode or Big Picture moves it.
Changing the Windows primary display can help the first case, but it will not necessarily fix a game that stores its own monitor choice or has a display-detection bug.

Fast fixes you can try immediately
Move a visible window
- Use Alt + Tab until the game has focus.
- Press Win + Shift + Left Arrow or Win + Shift + Right Arrow to move the focused window to the adjacent display.
- Drag the window if it is in windowed mode.
- Close the game normally while it is on the desired monitor, then relaunch it.
This built-in shortcut works for a movable window. A genuinely exclusive-fullscreen game may ignore it.
Toggle fullscreen
Press Alt + Enter to try switching between fullscreen and windowed mode. This is common but not universal: custom renderers and newer fullscreen implementations may not respond.
Recover an invisible window
- Focus the game from the taskbar with Alt + Tab.
- Press Win + Shift + Left/Right Arrow.
- If needed, press Alt + Space, choose Move, and use the arrow keys to bring the window onto the visible desktop.
- As a reset, press Win + P, choose PC screen only, configure the game, then restore Extend.

Verify Windows’ monitor arrangement
- Right-click an empty desktop area and select Display settings.
- Select Identify so Windows shows a number on each physical display.
- Drag the monitor rectangles until their virtual positions match the real arrangement.
- Select the monitor you want games to use.
- Under Multiple displays, select Make this my main display if you want Windows-following applications to open there.
- Confirm that the display mode is Extend rather than Duplicate or a stale disconnected layout.
Microsoft describes these controls in its Windows multiple-monitor support page. Many applications commonly follow the primary display, but this is not guaranteed for games.

The number shown by Identify is not necessarily the number used by a game. Engines can start indexing at zero, enumerate adapters separately, or use monitor names. Do not assume that Windows “Monitor 2” means a launch argument such as -monitor 2.
Choose the monitor inside the game
When available, an in-game selector is usually the most durable solution. Look under Settings → Display, Graphics, Video, Screen or Output display. Labels may include Monitor, Display device, Fullscreen monitor or Display adapter.
- Switch temporarily to Windowed or Borderless Windowed.
- Select the intended display.
- Set its resolution and refresh rate.
- Apply the changes and restart if requested.
- Test exclusive fullscreen only after borderless mode works.
Games may number displays differently from Windows, identify them by adapter or resolution, or store a monitor name in a configuration file. Test the entries shown by the game instead of inferring an index from Windows.

- Launch in windowed or borderless mode.
- Move the game to the desired monitor and set resolution and refresh rate.
- Apply the settings.
- Exit through the game’s normal menu so it can write its configuration.
- Reconnect the final monitor arrangement before testing another launch.
Windows has a Remember window locations based on monitor connection option. It can help docking users, but it can also restore a window to a location associated with a disconnected display. Microsoft documents this option in its multiple-monitor settings guidance.

Test that setting off if the problem began after unplugging a monitor, connecting a dock, or switching between laptop-only and external displays. Back up a game’s configuration before resetting it: deleting files can also remove graphics preferences, controls and accessibility settings. Locations vary by game and may be under its installation folder, %USERPROFILE%DocumentsMy Games, %APPDATA%, %LOCALAPPDATA% or Steam Cloud.
Reset a stubborn fullscreen game to one display
- Close the game.
- Press Win + P and select PC screen only.
- Launch the game and change it to windowed or borderless mode.
- Select the intended output display if the game offers one.
- Exit normally.
- Press Win + P and restore Extend.
If the game has no selector, temporarily disabling the unwanted monitor in Settings → System → Display can force a new display choice. This is a reset, not a permanent guarantee; a saved game setting can still override it later.
Steam and game-specific launch options
In Steam, right-click the game, choose Properties, and inspect Launch Options only when the developer documents a supported parameter. Suggestions such as -monitor 2, -display 1, -adapter 1, -screen-fullscreen 0 or -window-mode borderless are engine- and version-specific, not universal Steam or Windows commands.
Indexes may begin at zero; an adapter argument may choose a renderer rather than a physical screen; an unsupported option may do nothing or stop the game launching. Remove experimental arguments if they create new behavior. Steam community examples, including this windowed-mode discussion and this second-monitor discussion, are anecdotal unless confirmed by the game’s developer or engine documentation.

Do not confuse monitor selection with GPU selection
Windows 11’s Settings → System → Display → Graphics page lets an application use Let Windows decide, Power saving or High performance. This chooses a graphics processor preference, not a universal physical-monitor destination. Microsoft explains the distinction in its windowed-game optimization guidance.
- Monitor selection determines which physical display shows the game.
- GPU selection determines which processor renders it.
- On laptops, a panel may be wired to one GPU while rendering is assigned to another.
Use Graphics settings for performance or compatibility diagnosis, not as a guaranteed launch-monitor switch.
Test Windows 11 windowed-game optimizations
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Find the game under Custom options for apps and select Options.
- Test Optimizations for windowed games on or off.
- Save and restart the game.
Microsoft says this feature affects compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 windowed and borderless games, including presentation behavior, latency, Auto HDR and variable refresh support on suitable systems. It is a troubleshooting variable, not a monitor selector.

Automation tools: when they help
Windows shortcuts
Win + Shift + Arrow is free, immediate and best for a responsive movable window. It cannot guarantee placement for exclusive fullscreen.

PowerToys FancyZones
Microsoft PowerToys is free and open source, and FancyZones can place ordinary or borderless windows into layouts, including options related to the current monitor or last-known zone. It is not an engine-level monitor selector, and exclusive-fullscreen games can bypass it. Mixed DPI scaling can also limit cross-monitor behavior.
DisplayFusion
DisplayFusion offers monitor profiles, window-position profiles, triggers, hotkeys and application launching. Its window-management documentation describes those controls. It suits people who regularly switch desk, TV, dock or multi-monitor layouts, but it is excessive for a one-time shortcut fix and may not control a game that bypasses normal window management.
Edge cases worth checking
- Mixed refresh rates: a game may revert to a mode saved for a 60 Hz TV instead of a 144 Hz monitor.
- Different DPI scaling: windows can reopen offset, oversized or partly outside the visible area.
- HDR and VRR: a black screen after moving displays can indicate mode compatibility rather than placement.
- Identical monitors: use Identify, compare resolutions and temporarily disable one display to determine which entry the game uses.
- Driver changes: if the issue began after a graphics-driver update, test the current driver and a known-good earlier version using the manufacturer’s support process.
- Remote desktop, docks and KVMs: these can alter enumeration and remembered locations.
When there is no universal fix
A game can ignore normal Windows placement, use a proprietary renderer, store a bad display name, or expose no monitor selector. In that situation, the practical choices are borderless mode, a documented game-specific parameter, launching with one display temporarily enabled, or an automation utility for ordinary windows. Changing the Windows primary display remains useful for applications that follow it, but it cannot override every game’s display logic.
