If you want a MOBA to play while March of Giants is still in development, choose based on the part of its pitch that interests you: League of Legends for a familiar 5v5 format, or SMITE 2 and Predecessor for third-person combat. None of these is a full stand-in for March of Giants’ announced mix of giant heroes, soldier command, and battlefield construction.
What to know about March of Giants’ release
Ubisoft’s October 1, 2026 announcement schedules the Pioneer Playtest for October 7–18, 2026, and says Early Access is planned for summer 2027. The playtest is open to North America and selected European countries; players request access through the Steam page and receive a Steam notification if admitted. Access is not guaranteed, so check the page for current availability. Ubisoft Montréal’s article gives a conflicting October 19 end date; this guide uses the later-dated press release’s October 18 schedule. Ubisoft press release Ubisoft Montréal article
As of the Steam listing checked October 3, 2026, the game is marked “Coming soon,” not generally released, and described as free-to-play. The listing specifies Windows 10/11, broadband internet, a persistent internet connection, and the Ubisoft Connect launcher. Requirements can change during development, so consult Steam for the latest details. Steam listing
Pick a game by the feature you want
| Game | Best fit | How it differs from March of Giants |
|---|---|---|
| League of Legends | Classic 5v5 MOBA structure | Its official description centers on destroying the enemy Nexus. The cited description does not establish comparable army-command or battlefield-building systems. Official site |
| SMITE 2 | Third-person action and controller-friendly play | The official site describes a third-person action MOBA with controller support, cross-play, and cross-progression across PC and console; it is a match for the action view, not the announced soldier-command systems. Official site |
| Predecessor | Third-person MOBA on PC or console | Its official site lists PC, PlayStation, and Xbox availability with cross-play. The cited material does not establish Battleworks or army-command mechanics. Official site |
Choose League of Legends for familiar MOBA fundamentals
If the appeal is team-based lane play and a conventional five-player team, League of Legends is the clearest fit. Riot describes its core objective as battling to destroy the enemy Nexus. That makes it useful for the broad MOBA experience, but the cited description does not point to the combination of commanding soldiers and changing the battlefield announced for March of Giants. Choose SMITE 2 for a closer action-oriented camera
SMITE 2 is the option to consider if you want to control a character from a third-person perspective rather than use a conventional top-down presentation. Its official site also describes controller support, cross-play, and cross-progression across PC and console. Those are practical advantages if you want action-focused combat or play across supported platforms, but they do not make it a substitute for commanding an army. SMITE 2
Choose Predecessor for another third-person, cross-play option
Predecessor also offers a third-person MOBA approach and is listed for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox with cross-play. It is a reasonable alternative if those platforms or the direct-action view matter more than matching March of Giants’ distinct systems. Predecessor

What makes March of Giants different
Ubisoft describes March of Giants as a 4v4 MOBA set on a World War I-inspired battlefield with fantasy elements. Its announced design joins three systems: controlling a Giant with unique abilities, directing soldiers to scout, gather resources, capture objectives, attack Giants, or pressure defenses, and deploying Battleworks such as trenches and bunkers to create strategic choke points. Ubisoft press release Ubisoft Montréal article Steam listing
That distinction matters when choosing a temporary alternative: the three games above match broad MOBA or third-person-combat interests, but the cited official descriptions do not establish the same combination of giant control, soldier orders, and battlefield construction. Ubisoft product marketing manager Laure Guilbert described the design goal this way: “Our perspective is that, yes, MOBA is a difficult genre to break into. But there’s room for a different and innovative experience.” Ubisoft Montréal interview
