For a game centered on population needs, markets and public policy, Victoria 3 is the clearest fit. Factorio is the pick for production chains and logistics; EVE Online connects mining, industry and resource strategy to an online world shaped by conflict and politics. These games offer different kinds of economic depth, so there is no useful single winner without first deciding what kind you mean.
What “deep economic systems” can mean
Economic depth is not one scale. A game can model what people need and how policy affects production, or ask you to build efficient supply chains. Another can connect industry and resource decisions to the actions of other players. Those systems reward different kinds of thinking.
- Population and policy: Who produces and consumes goods, and how do taxes, wages or trade shape that activity?
- Markets and trade: How do prices, imports and exports affect economic choices?
- Production and logistics: How do you turn resources into goods and move them through an efficient system?
- Player-driven activity: How much of the economy is shaped by other players, including through conflict and politics?
The three games below are useful starting points because each emphasizes a different set of these decisions.
Victoria 3: population, markets and public policy
Victoria 3 is the strongest match if you want a grand-strategy game built around a population-and-market simulation. Its official product page highlights population needs, production methods, imports, exports and trade. The game’s developer diary also describes the economic system as central to the experience.

Lead designer Mikael Andersson described the intended scope in a Game Developer interview: “Our goal was to model every aspect of the global economy: production and exchange; infrastructure and bureaucracy; international trade and tariffs; wages and taxes; and most importantly, the consumption needs of the global population, broken up into more than 700 geographic regions with up to 100,000 individual population groups to account for.” Those figures describe the designer’s stated model scope in the 2023 interview; they are not an independent measure of accuracy or a specification for every current patch.
Choose Victoria 3 if you want economic decisions to be tied to the needs of people and the policies of a state. Its emphasis is broader than optimizing a factory: production and exchange sit alongside infrastructure, bureaucracy, tariffs, wages, taxes and consumption.

Factorio: production chains and logistics
Factorio is for players who mean economic depth as resource extraction, conversion and movement. Its official features page describes mining, logistics and production systems. The central challenge is designing a network that turns raw materials into useful output and gets that output where it needs to go.
This is a different kind of depth from Victoria 3. The focus is factory design and logistics rather than a population simulation or a market economy. Pick it when the satisfying economic question is how to organize production efficiently.

EVE Online: industry in a player-shaped world
EVE Online suits players interested in an online world where mining, industry, logistics and resource strategies connect with conflict and politics. CCP Games’ 2026 directors’ letter supports those connections.
The letter does not establish detailed claims about the game’s current market rules, so it is best treated as evidence of the broader relationship between industry and the online world—not as a guide to specific market mechanics. Choose EVE Online if you want economic activity to sit within a setting shaped by other players, rather than a system defined only by production planning or state policy.
