GameStop announced a “GameStop Retro” concept in August 2024, focused on older consoles and games. To see whether a nearby store currently offers Retro products, use GameStop’s Retro page and its ZIP-code and radius locator. The online category list shows which console families GameStop features, but it does not confirm local stock.

What GameStop announced about Retro stores

On August 27, 2024, GameStop announced “New Retro GameStops.” The announcement’s short slogan, reproduced by USA Today, was “THE CLASSICS ARE BACK.” USA Today’s August 29, 2024 report described the concept as stores selling older consoles and games, with examples including Wii and Xbox 360 hardware and games from franchises such as Pokémon, Mario Kart, Halo and Grand Theft Auto. Those details describe the announcement, not a current inventory guarantee.

At the time, GameStop had not specified how many locations would be designated Retro or whether the change would be permanent, according to USA Today. That is an announcement-era caveat, not a current store count. The current official page provides a locator but does not give a national count of Retro locations.

How to check for a GameStop Retro near you

  1. Open GameStop’s official Retro page.
  2. Enter your ZIP code in the “Find a store near you” tool.
  3. Select a search radius and check the results for nearby locations.
  4. Contact the store or check its current listing before making a trip if you are looking for a specific console or game; the category pages do not establish store-level availability.

Which classic consoles GameStop lists

The current Retro page organizes its pre-owned offerings by console family and category. It includes:

What to check before buying original hardware

If you are shopping for a particular classic system, verify the exact item and condition rather than relying on a broad category listing. For a complete setup, check which controller and power and video cables are included, and whether the games you want are compatible with that console. A Nintendo 64 is one of the systems GameStop lists, but availability, price and condition for any particular unit are not established by the category page. Ask the store to confirm what it has before traveling.
