Gaming usually costs fractions of a cent to several cents per hour in electricity. The result depends on the complete setup—not just the console or PC—plus your play time and utility rate. Calculate it with cost = (average watts ÷ 1,000) × hours × price per kWh, then measure your own system at the wall for a reliable answer.
The two-minute calculation
Utilities bill energy in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Watts (W) describe instantaneous power; watt-hours (Wh) describe energy over time.
kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1,000cost = kWh × electricity price per kWhannual cost = watts × hours per day × 365 ÷ 1,000 × rate
Use the average wall draw, not a PC power supply’s label. A 750-W supply can provide up to 750 W; it does not mean the computer continuously consumes 750 W.

Monthly and yearly examples
At 300 W, two hours a day, 30 days a month, and $0.16/kWh, gaming uses about 18 kWh and costs $2.88 per month (about $35.04 per year). A 600-W setup under the same schedule uses 36 kWh and costs $5.76 per month (about $70.08 per year).
That bill can become more significant when a high-power PC runs many more hours, remains idle overnight, or also serves as a workstation, media server, renderer, or other always-on computer.
Typical consumption by platform
There is no universal “gaming wattage.” Game engines, frame-rate caps, resolution, ray tracing, HDR, refresh rate, cooling, and background tasks all change the average.

- What your get: 1*5FT PSU power cord, PSU not include.
- Handhelds: Usually the lowest operating energy because the built-in screen replaces a separate TV or monitor. Docking, charging losses, and battery condition change the result.
- Consoles: Generally lower and more predictable than a high-end desktop, but the television can be a substantial part of the total.
- Gaming laptops: Highly variable. A plugged-in laptop using its discrete GPU and charging the battery can draw much more than it does on battery; an external display adds to the load.
- Desktop PCs: Range from modest systems to several hundred watts during demanding games. Uncapped frame rates and powerful GPUs increase draw.
Microsoft’s current Xbox sustainability telemetry reports Series S game averages of roughly 55–69 W and Series X averages of about 104–133 W across listed scenarios and genres. These are console-at-the-wall averages, not guarantees for every game, revision, TV, or room setup. See the Microsoft platform baselines (updated March 4, 2026).
For perspective, at $0.16/kWh and two hours daily, illustrative console-only figures are about $0.62 a month for a 65-W Series S and $1.20 for a 125-W Series X. A moderate 350-W PC would be about $3.36; a 600-W PC about $5.76. These are examples, not measured averages.
The display can change the comparison
Include the TV or monitor in serious comparisons. Size, brightness, HDR, OLED versus LCD/LED, refresh rate, and multiple-monitor setups all matter. A console measured without its TV understates household use; a handheld using its built-in screen avoids a separate display. Turn off a screen that remains on while a console is paused or downloading.

Why your reading differs
- A demanding scene can use far more power than a menu or video stream.
- Higher resolution, HDR, ray tracing, effects, and refresh rates can increase GPU or display draw.
- A frame-rate cap may reduce wasted rendering, but savings depend on whether the game is GPU- or CPU-limited.
- Downloads and updates generally differ from active play.
- Sleep, network standby, and full shutdown are different modes; labels vary by generation and firmware.
- Routers, switches, speakers, storage, UPS losses, and charging accessories may be constant or incidental loads.
Historical field metering found that consoles left on for long periods made power management an important savings opportunity. The OSTI study estimated U.S. console use at 7.1 TWh in 2012 from 880 households and 113 consoles; it is useful context, not a measurement of today’s installed base.

- Take the marginal per-kWh price from your utility bill, including delivery and applicable time-of-use charges. Fixed monthly fees are not incremental gaming costs.
- Measure everything from one wall outlet: PC or console, display, speakers, external drives, and any gaming-only network equipment.
- Record watts in a menu, typical play, demanding play, downloading, and sleep/standby.
- Compute energy with
watts × hours ÷ 1,000, then multiply by your rate. - Repeat after changing frame caps, HDR, resolution, or graphics settings if efficiency is your goal.
A plug-in watt meter is usually sufficient for one station. A smart plug can track cumulative energy, but check its load rating and measurement accuracy; relay-based models are not laboratory instruments. A whole-home monitor is appropriate for circuit-level investigation, solar, or time-of-use analysis—not for a renter measuring one console.
Console versus PC: which costs less?
A high-end desktop usually has the highest gaming draw, while a console is typically lower at the console itself. But the answer changes with the game’s performance target, hours played, display, and rate. A mainstream PC can approach or exceed a console; a gaming laptop or handheld may use less at the wall. The fair comparison is whole setup, same hours, same electricity rate, and comparable performance.

- AUTOMATICALLY ALARM: When your power supply test value is normal range, the Power Supply Tester would issue a buzzer alarm, Easy to Know.
- WITH LED DISPLAY: We have developed a portable computer power tester for the power supply market that can judge the quality of the power supply. It has LCD display intuitive and accurate display voltage (+/ 0.01V), automatic fault alarm, complete test interface, small and beautiful appearance, and more test functions. It is your best choice and helper to quickly detect PC power.
- EASY TO USE: This power tester only needs to be connected to the power supply ATX connector to easily and intuitively know whether the output of each power supply is normal. It can detect ATX, BTX, ITX, TFX computer power supply, and can display various voltage and PG values in LCD screen to quickly detect the performance of computer power supply.
- PRACTICAL & CONVENIENCE: Small and practical power tester. Now the number of power output groups is increasing. As long as one of them has problem, the hardware of the computer system may work abnormally or even burn out. To measure whether the output voltage output of the power supply is stable, the player usually uses a multimeter. But for the average user is still a little troublesome.
- NOTE: It can also measure the output wire P4/P6/P8/SATA/IDE, and the external DIE/SATA/P6/P8 is the light display, there is no LCD voltage. There is LCD voltage display only when connecting to the 24pin or 20pin.
The LBNL research on computer gaming’s hidden cost emphasizes that annual energy is power multiplied by use time: a higher-draw device used less can consume less over a year. Its Green Gaming project found client-side annual use spanning roughly 5 to more than 1,200 kWh across 26 systems, reflecting very different equipment and habits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does cloud gaming save electricity?
Cloud gaming lowers the player’s local hardware requirement, but rendering moves to a data center and the stream still travels through network equipment to your client and display. Your bill normally includes only the client, screen, router, and home network—not the provider’s data center.
LBNL’s cloud-gaming analysis modeled roughly 340 W of data-center plus 180 W of network energy for PC cloud gaming, and about 180 W plus 120 W for console cloud gaming in its tested scenarios. Some cases reached around three times local energy. Those are study-specific assumptions, not a universal current value for every provider, codec, region, or device.

Practical ways to cut the bill
- Measure first. Savings are rarely large enough to justify blind hardware replacement.
- Cap frame rate at a level your display can show; enable V-sync where appropriate.
- Use energy-saving shutdown rather than network-connected standby when remote wake and overnight updates are unnecessary.
- Set PC display-off and sleep timers; do not leave games paused overnight.
- Lower unnecessary refresh rate, HDR brightness, ray tracing, shadows, and effects.
- Undervolt the GPU or set a lower power target if your hardware supports it; test stability and check warranty terms.
- Turn off the TV or monitor when leaving the room and avoid unnecessary second displays.
- Schedule play for off-peak hours only when your tariff actually has cheaper periods.
- Avoid idle background workloads on a gaming PC.
LBNL reports potential gaming-PC savings of 50–75% for some interventions and a 40% console opportunity in its project context. These are project estimates, not guaranteed results for an individual machine; verify changes with a meter.
Choosing a measuring device
- Plug-in watt meter: Best for a temporary, direct reading without an account or panel work. Verify voltage, overload, accuracy, and current specifications before purchase.
- Smart energy plug: Convenient app history and automation. Emporia’s Smart Plug, for example, is specified for 1,800 W at 120 V, 15 A peak for up to one hour daily, and 10 A continuous load, with Wi-Fi/cloud features. Do not use a device near its limit for a high-power PC, and never hard-cut power during updates or disk activity. See the official product page.
- Whole-home monitor: Useful for circuit-level or long-term bill investigations. Emporia Vue 3 configurations list approximately $99.99 to $199.99 and about ±2% accuracy, but installation in an electrical panel should be handled by a qualified electrician. See Emporia’s Vue 3 page.
At only a few dollars of annual gaming savings, an energy monitor may not pay for itself through gaming alone. Buy one for measurement, automation, or broader household troubleshooting—not an assumed payback.

Assign only the gaming share of a TV, PC, router, or laptop used for other tasks. Battery charging, UPS losses, and displays used for movies or work should not automatically be charged entirely to gaming.
Bottom line
Gaming electricity is usually inexpensive per session, but high-power PCs, large displays, long hours, and idle time add up. Measure the complete station at the wall, use your own marginal utility rate, cap performance you do not need, and select energy-saving sleep or shutdown behavior. Cloud gaming may lower your household draw without lowering total system energy, so always define the measurement boundary.
