Verdict: The Minisforum EM780 can make an excellent tiny TV, travel, or portable-display gaming PC. Its AMD Ryzen 7 7840U and Radeon 780M are well suited to 1080p gaming with sensible settings, and Bazzite can provide a controller-first, Steam Deck-style interface. But the EM780 is not a handheld, and it should not automatically be described as an official SteamOS machine.
You still need an external display, controller, and power source. For many buyers, the best setup is the 32GB/1TB configuration with Bazzite’s AMD-compatible Steam Gaming Mode image. Windows remains the better choice for Game Pass PC, anti-cheat-heavy multiplayer, and Windows-only applications.
What the Minisforum EM780 actually is
The EM780 is an ultra-compact mini PC built around AMD’s Ryzen 7 7840U mobile processor and its integrated Radeon 780M graphics. AMD specifies the 7840U with 8 Zen 4 CPU cores, 16 threads, boost speeds up to 5.1GHz, a 28W default TDP, and a configurable 15–30W range. Its Radeon 780M has 12 graphics cores and a listed graphics frequency of up to 2.7GHz. See the AMD specifications for the processor-level details.
That makes the EM780 a capable integrated-graphics gaming system, not a small desktop with a discrete GPU. The Radeon 780M borrows system memory rather than having a separate pool of dedicated VRAM, so the memory configuration matters more than it would on an ordinary office mini PC.

Minisforum has listed the EM780 with 32GB of onboard memory and either a 512GB or 1TB SSD. The RAM is effectively not a user-upgradable component. Storage is therefore the practical upgrade path, although the exact drive layout and replacement procedure should be confirmed against the manual and revision of the unit you buy.
The machine’s size makes it easy to carry between rooms, take to a hotel, or connect to a portable monitor or compatible AR display. It does not contain a screen, battery, keyboard, or built-in controls. “Portable mini PC” is accurate; “handheld console” is not.
SteamOS, Bazzite, ChimeraOS, and Big Picture are different
Official SteamOS is Valve’s operating system, most closely associated with Steam Deck and Valve-supported hardware. Do not assume that a generic mini PC has official Valve SteamOS support merely because it can run Steam or a community installation.
Bazzite is a Fedora Atomic-based gaming distribution. Its Deck/HTPC edition offers Steam Gaming Mode: a controller-oriented interface based on the same broad Steam gaming-session concept used by SteamOS on Steam Deck. Bazzite also provides conventional desktop images, Flatpak support, and additional launcher options.

ChimeraOS is another console-focused Linux distribution. Its documentation says AMD GPUs with full DirectX 12 support are generally supported and that UEFI is required. It can provide a console-like startup experience, but hardware compatibility and fallback behavior still need to be checked for the specific machine.
Steam Big Picture Mode is different again. It can be launched on Windows or ordinary Linux without replacing the operating system, giving a couch-friendly interface while preserving the broader compatibility of a normal desktop installation.

The current Minisforum product information identifies the EM780 hardware and configurations but does not, by itself, establish that the unit ships with an officially supported Valve SteamOS installation. If a listing calls the EM780 “SteamOS-powered,” check whether it actually means Bazzite, ChimeraOS, or a community-installed image.
Why the Ryzen 7 7840U and Radeon 780M work well here
The 7840U combines eight Zen 4 CPU cores with RDNA 3-generation integrated graphics. That is enough CPU capacity for modern game engines, emulation within legal and hardware limits, desktop use, media playback, and background services. The Radeon 780M is the more important part for games: it is substantially more capable than the basic integrated graphics found in inexpensive office mini PCs.
AMD also lists PCIe 4.0, USB4 support at the processor level, and AV1 encoding and decoding. These are platform-level capabilities, not guarantees that every physical port or firmware setting on every EM780 revision exposes every feature. The purchased unit’s cooling system, firmware, memory configuration, power limit, and adapters determine the experience.

Expected gaming performance
The sensible target is 1080p gaming at low-to-medium settings, with 720p or 900p internal rendering and upscaling used for heavier games. A 30 or 40fps cap can produce a better experience than chasing unstable high frame rates. Native 1440p or 4K AAA gaming, ray tracing, ultra presets, and high-refresh competitive gaming are poor matches for this class of integrated GPU.
- Excellent fit: indie games, older AAA games, esports titles, and games designed around Steam Deck-class hardware.
- Good fit with tuning: many modern games at 720p or 1080p with low-to-medium settings, reduced shadows and foliage, upscaling, and a sensible frame-rate cap.
- Poor fit: demanding current AAA games at native 1440p or 4K, ultra settings, ray tracing, or a locked high-refresh-rate target.
Do not treat promotional FPS claims as universal results. Performance changes with the game build, operating system, Mesa or AMD driver version, BIOS, power limit, resolution, upscaler, settings, cooling, and memory bandwidth. A useful test report should disclose:

The Radeon 780M uses shared system memory. That is why 32GB is the preferable EM780 configuration for gaming: it leaves more memory available to the operating system and applications while giving the iGPU a larger overall pool. It does not mean that 32GB is dedicated exclusively to graphics.

The recommended EM780 configuration
For a new gaming-focused build, choose:
- 32GB memory: the practical choice because it is onboard and the iGPU shares system RAM.
- 1TB SSD: preferable to 512GB for a modern game library. A 512GB drive is usable, but a few large games can consume most of it quickly.
- External controller: essential for a console-style setup. A wired USB controller is the best troubleshooting baseline; Bluetooth is more convenient once pairing and sleep/wake behavior are confirmed.
- External display: a TV, monitor, portable monitor, or compatible AR glasses connected through the exact video path supported by the purchased unit.
- Appropriate power supply: use the supplied adapter or verify voltage, wattage, USB-C Power Delivery requirements, and cable compatibility before choosing a compact charger or power bank.
- Optional dock: useful for a permanent desk or TV setup needing extra USB ports, Ethernet, networking, or additional display connectivity.
An eGPU can provide much higher graphics performance if the specific connection, enclosure, power supply, and firmware support are verified. It also undermines the EM780’s main advantages: small size, simplicity, and portability.
Installing Bazzite for a Steam Deck-style interface
For this hardware, Bazzite is the most practical route to a SteamOS-like controller-first experience. It is not official Valve SteamOS; it is Bazzite with Steam Gaming Mode.
Before installation
- Back up Windows, personal files, and any recovery data.
- Record the Windows activation and recovery options before replacing the installation.
- Open the current Bazzite download selector and choose the AMD-compatible image.
- Prepare a USB flash drive large enough for the downloaded ISO and a trusted image-writing utility.
- Confirm that the EM780 is configured for UEFI boot.
- Choose between replacing Windows, dual-booting, or installing to a second drive if the exact hardware permits it.
Bazzite’s selector asks about hardware, GPU vendor, desktop environment, and whether Steam Gaming Mode is wanted. For an AMD EM780 intended mainly for TV or controller use, select the current Handheld/HTPC or Deck-style image when the selector offers a compatible option. Choose a Desktop image if ordinary desktop work, development, or troubleshooting is equally important. Bazzite says its legacy installer is being phased out, so prefer the current regular installer.
Installation sequence
- Download the image from Bazzite’s official site.
- Write it to the USB drive.
- Connect a keyboard, display, and—if convenient—a wired network connection.
- During startup, open the EM780’s firmware boot menu and select the USB device. The exact key and BIOS label should be confirmed from the current EM780 manual rather than guessed.
- Select the installation target carefully. This is the point at which an incorrect choice can erase Windows or personal data.
- Install Bazzite, reboot, and remove the USB drive when prompted.
- Complete first-run setup and sign in to Steam.
- Install system updates before judging game performance.
- Reboot after major system or graphics updates.
- Test display output, audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, controller input, sleep/wake, and game launching.
First-boot checklist
- Set the intended resolution and refresh rate.
- Confirm that audio is routed to the TV, monitor, or headset.
- Pair the controller and test Steam Input.
- Install one known-compatible game before filling the drive.
- Check whether suspend and wake work reliably.
- Try the desktop session so you know how to recover from a gaming-session problem.
- Observe fan behavior and temperatures under a sustained game load.
- Confirm that the remaining storage is adequate for the planned library.
If Bazzite’s Steam Gaming Mode fails
Bazzite’s Steam Gaming Mode has more demanding graphics and display requirements than a conventional desktop session. Its documentation identifies several failure paths, including Gamescope failures, black screens on some GPU or display combinations, and problems caused by unsupported Steam beta software.

- If the gaming session produces a black screen, connect a conventional HDMI monitor or TV, enter the desktop session, and reset the display configuration.
- Use a wired controller while troubleshooting Bluetooth pairing, Steam Input, or wake problems.
- If the Deck-style session remains unreliable, install or switch to a Bazzite Desktop image rather than assuming the EM780 hardware is defective.
- Some games and emulators may require Steam Input to be disabled.
- For display-handshake issues, remove docks and adapters temporarily and test a direct connection at a standard resolution and refresh rate.
Keep Windows recovery available if firmware updates, vendor utilities, or device-specific troubleshooting are easier there. A dual-boot installation is more complicated, but it can be useful when the machine must serve both as a Linux console and a Windows PC.
ChimeraOS is a credible alternative
ChimeraOS is designed around a console-style gaming experience and is worth considering if Bazzite is not the interface you want. Its hardware documentation says AMD GPUs are generally supported when they fully implement DirectX 12, and it requires UEFI.

The getting-started documentation describes first-boot setup followed by Steam login and the gamepad-oriented interface. If Steam or Gamescope cannot initialize, ChimeraOS may fall back to the GNOME desktop. That fallback is useful for recovery, but it also shows why “plug and play” should not be promised for every mini-PC revision.
ChimeraOS is not automatically better than Bazzite. It is another console-first option whose current hardware support, update behavior, and game compatibility should be checked before installation.
When Windows is the better operating system
Keep Windows if you need any of the following:
- Game Pass PC and Microsoft Store games.
- Anti-cheat-heavy multiplayer games that do not work under Proton.
- Adobe or other Windows-only applications.
- Vendor utilities and firmware tools.
- Easy access to every major launcher.
- Fewer Linux-specific display, launcher, or compatibility workarounds.
You can still configure Steam to start in Big Picture Mode for a couch-friendly experience. This sacrifices some of the appliance-like simplicity of a dedicated gaming image but preserves Windows compatibility.

The EM780 is portable in the mini-PC sense. You can carry it between rooms, take it to a friend’s house, connect it to a hotel television, or pair it with a portable monitor and controller. A compact USB-C charger may reduce the travel kit if it meets the computer’s actual power requirements.
It is not suitable as a direct Steam Deck replacement for a train, airplane, or sofa session. You must supply the missing screen, controls, battery, and power. AR glasses or a portable display can make the kit smaller, but they add their own compatibility and power requirements.
Expect problems if the cable lacks video support, the USB-C power source is under-specced, an adapter cannot handle the chosen resolution, or Gamescope selects an unsupported refresh rate. For recovery, connect a normal HDMI display directly, remove the dock, boot into the desktop session, and return to a standard resolution before reconnecting the portable display.
Linux game compatibility is title-specific
SteamOS-like Linux systems use Proton for many Windows games, but Proton is not a guarantee that every title will work. Anti-cheat systems, launchers, DRM, video codecs, mods, and multiplayer services can all create exceptions. Check the game’s current compatibility information and community reports, including ProtonDB, but treat those reports as guidance rather than a promise.
A game that launches successfully may still have problems with controller mapping, cutscene playback, an external launcher, suspend and resume, or online matchmaking. Test the games that matter most before deleting Windows.
Buying advice and availability
When checked on August 18, 2026, the official US EM780 page listed a $769 regular price and a $619 sale price, but marked the product out of stock. Those figures are a dated, US-specific snapshot—not a current guarantee. Check the official product page for current stock, regional pricing, warranty information, and configuration.

If the EM780 returns at or near the displayed price, the 32GB/1TB version is the one to target. At a substantial reseller markup, its older 7840U platform becomes less attractive than newer AMD mini PCs with faster integrated graphics or better support.
A controller is necessary only if you do not already own one. Minisforum’s MGP01 controller is one option, but an existing Xbox, PlayStation, 8BitDo, or wired controller may be a better choice.
The TB4-01 dock makes more sense for a permanent desk or TV installation than for minimalist travel. An eGPU dock or MGA1 graphics dock is relevant only if you explicitly need discrete-GPU performance; once the graphics hardware, power supply, enclosure, and cables are added, a more powerful mini PC may be the better purchase.
How it compares with the alternatives
Steam Deck
The Steam Deck is a complete handheld with a screen, controls, battery, and Valve-supported SteamOS experience. It is the better choice for genuinely mobile gaming. The EM780 is more flexible as a desktop, travel mini PC, or permanent TV computer, and its Ryzen 7 7840U/Radeon 780M platform can be a strong match for 1080p external-display gaming.
A newer AMD mini PC
A newer AMD APU may offer materially faster integrated graphics, improved efficiency, or longer platform relevance. If the EM780 is unavailable or only sold at a high markup, compare total price, memory capacity, storage, cooling, firmware support, and display connectivity rather than buying solely for its small size.

This is the safest option for broad launcher, Game Pass, anti-cheat, and productivity compatibility. It is less streamlined than a dedicated gaming distribution, but troubleshooting and firmware support are often simpler.
A discrete-GPU mini PC or eGPU
This is the path to higher frame rates and better modern-AAA performance, at the cost of heat, noise, price, power consumption, and portability.
Final verdict
The Minisforum EM780 is a good fit for a reader who wants an extremely small AMD gaming PC and already accepts the need for an external display, controller, and power source. With 32GB memory, a 1TB SSD, and Bazzite’s compatible Steam Gaming Mode image, it can deliver a convincing Steam Deck-style TV or travel experience at 1080p with sensible settings.
Choose Windows instead if Game Pass, anti-cheat, launchers, or Windows applications are priorities. Choose a Steam Deck if you want a complete handheld. Choose a newer mini PC if the EM780 is unavailable or overpriced. Most importantly, call the software what it is: Bazzite with Steam Gaming Mode, ChimeraOS, or Windows Big Picture—not automatically official SteamOS.
