Gaming Stutter on a Samsung 960 Pro or Other NVMe SSD: What the “Solved” Case Actually Found

Short answer: The 2017 report did not show that a Samsung 960 Pro—or NVMe drives generally—causes game stutter. The original poster said a clean installation of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update resolved the problem; the specific Windows fault was never identified or independently verified. The poster’s earlier suspicion about Windows Search indexing was later withdrawn.

What happened in the original report?

An AnandTech forum thread that began on August 21, 2017 described a system moving from a Samsung 850 Pro SATA SSD to a Samsung 960 Pro 1TB NVMe SSD. The owner said Samsung Magician showed the 960 Pro operating over PCIe 3.0 x4, and that ordinary use and synthetic benchmarks seemed normal. The trouble appeared in particular games rather than across the whole PC. Read the original report.

  • The Witcher 3 stuttered most noticeably while entering Novigrad, with storage activity visible during the hitch.
  • Batman: Arkham Knight reportedly showed a milder version of the problem.
  • Doom and Mass Effect: Andromeda did not show the same behavior in the owner’s tests.
  • Returning to the 850 Pro installation, with Windows and the games on it, reportedly restored smooth play.

That sequence made the SSD swap look suspicious, but it did not isolate the SSD as the cause: moving between installations can also change Windows state, drivers, game files, background processes, and caches.

Why disk activity looked like the culprit

The stutter coincided with visible storage activity and occurred during open-world movement, when a game may request new assets. It also seemed to differ between the NVMe and SATA installations. Those observations make storage a sensible place to investigate, but an activity light only indicates I/O; it does not establish that the drive is faulty or that it caused the frame-time spike.

A hitch can coincide with asset reads while the underlying constraint is game-engine scheduling, CPU-side decompression, shader compilation, memory pressure, a driver, or Windows doing background work. The separate discussion noted that Novigrad already presented streaming and shader-compilation challenges, so it is not a clean test of SSD performance by itself. See the discussion of the game-specific behavior.

The indexing theory was a false lead

The owner initially suspected Windows Search indexing after changing indexing behavior. That sounded plausible: Microsoft explains that Search tracks file changes and indexing can use system resources while building or maintaining its index. But the owner later said the stutter persisted, so indexing was not the reported final fix.

On Windows 11, inspect scope under Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows. On Windows 10, the location varies by release; look under Settings → Search → Searching Windows or open Control Panel → Indexing Options. Microsoft’s current guidance recommends narrowing indexed locations or excluding unnecessary folders when appropriate, rather than disabling Search across the system. Microsoft: Search indexing in Windows.

If a hitch coincides with suspected Search activity, check the process in Task Manager or Resource Monitor. You can inspect the service by opening services.msc and locating Windows Search; from an elevated Command Prompt, sc query wsearch checks its status. A controlled restart can be done with net stop wsearch followed by net start wsearch. These checks help test a suspect; they do not prove Search caused a gaming hitch. If Search itself is malfunctioning, Microsoft documents repair and reset options. Windows Search performance guidance · Fix problems in Windows Search.

What was actually “solved”?

On October 13, 2017, the owner reported that a clean installation of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update resolved the stutter. The affected system had been using a Creators-era Windows installation. This is a single-user report, not a controlled demonstration of a particular Windows bug: the thread did not identify the faulty component or establish that an in-place upgrade would have had the same result.

The report also does not prove the 960 Pro was free of every possible firmware, motherboard, or driver issue. It does show that replacing the NVMe drive was not the final remedy the owner reported. Fall Creators Update is obsolete, not a recommendation for current PCs. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; use a supported Windows release rather than installing that historical build. Microsoft: tips to improve PC performance in Windows.

Diagnose a similar hitch on a current PC

Measure the hitch before changing hardware. Average FPS can look acceptable even when individual frames arrive late. Use a frame-time graph and watch system activity during a repeatable run; a storage light alone is not a diagnosis.

  1. Make the test repeatable. Use the same game build, save, route, graphics settings, resolution, and frame cap. A repeatable route near Novigrad’s Portside Gate was used in the original discussion, but that location itself stresses the game’s streaming behavior.
  2. Capture frame times and system load. Record GPU utilization, CPU use per core, RAM and VRAM use, drive active time, throughput and latency, plus temperatures and clock speeds. A frame-time spike with high disk activity is a clue to investigate, not proof of cause.
  3. Identify the I/O source. In Task Manager or Resource Monitor, check which process is reading or writing during the hitch. Look at active time alongside actual transfer rate and latency. High active time with little throughput and high latency deserves more attention than a short burst of fast reads.
  4. Check background work. Look for Search Indexer, antivirus scans, cloud sync, backup jobs, launcher updates, Windows Update, overlays, capture tools, RGB utilities, and hardware-monitoring software. Test one suspect at a time or use a clean boot; do not leave security protection disabled as a permanent workaround.
  5. Bring the platform up to date appropriately. Install available Windows updates and relevant optional driver updates. Use the motherboard maker’s chipset and storage drivers when applicable; update the GPU driver if the evidence points there. Check UEFI release notes before updating firmware, and use the SSD maker’s official utility to check drive firmware. Microsoft’s performance guidance includes Windows and driver updates among its troubleshooting measures.
  6. Inspect the drive and connection. Check SMART/health status, firmware, temperature under sustained load, free space, PCIe link width and generation, and Event Viewer for storage or controller errors. Confirm the M.2 slot is supported and account for lane sharing or adapter limits. Normal benchmark results alone do not rule out intermittent latency.
  7. Compare like with like. For an A/B test, hold the game, save, settings, GPU driver, Windows build, background processes, power plan, and—where possible—motherboard slot constant. Swapping drives while changing the OS installation or drivers cannot isolate storage as the variable.

Causes to consider before blaming the SSD

Game stutter can arise from shader compilation, asset streaming, GPU-driver changes, CPU scheduling or a single-thread limit, VRAM or system-RAM exhaustion and paging, antivirus or sync activity, SSD thermal throttling, firmware or storage-driver problems, M.2 lane sharing, a nearly full drive, corrupted game files, overlays, or unstable CPU, GPU, RAM, or storage overclocks. A game that hitches only in one title or location points toward a game-specific path worth testing; it does not by itself identify the cause.

NVMe describes a storage interface and protocol, not a promise of smoother frames. Peak bandwidth, per-request latency, the game’s streaming design, decompression and shader work, and the CPU/GPU’s ability to deliver frames on time are different factors. An NVMe drive can be active during a hitch without being defective or being the root cause.

When a clean Windows installation or drive replacement makes sense

Consider a clean installation late, not first

A clean Windows installation can be a reasonable recovery or diagnostic step if the problem began after a major OS migration, no individual service is implicated by clean-boot testing, and driver cleanup, Windows repair, and game-file verification have not helped. If practical, compare behavior on a clean test installation before committing to a reinstall. Back up important data and reinstall only from a supported Windows release.

Do not replace a drive on the strength of one game hitch

Consider warranty testing or replacement when there is evidence such as SMART failure or declining health, uncorrectable errors, repeated controller resets, abnormal latency across multiple workloads, a manufacturer-confirmed firmware issue, or reproducible failure in another system or fresh OS installation. A blinking activity light, a normal benchmark, or stutter in one game does not settle the question.

Use Search exclusions selectively

If monitoring shows Search indexing a large, frequently changing game library during hitches, temporarily exclude that specific folder and repeat the same test. Excluding a large game library can reduce indexing work but also means those files are not included in Search’s index. A targeted exclusion is generally more useful than globally disabling Windows Search. Microsoft documents indexed-location controls and index-rebuild guidance in its Search indexing overview and Search performance guidance.
