Gamma is a PlayStation 1 emulator for iPhone and iPad, developed by ZodTTD. Its May 2024 release was a milestone for ordinary App Store users—not proof that it was the first PS1 emulator ever to run on iOS. Earlier options existed through jailbreaking and other distribution methods. Gamma made a dedicated PS1 emulator available through Apple’s standard App Store, without requiring a jailbreak or alternative app store.
What Gamma is—and what it does not include
Gamma recreates PlayStation 1 hardware in software so an iPhone or iPad can run compatible PS1 games. The emulator is separate from the game files and the console’s BIOS firmware: Gamma supplies the emulator, but its terms say it does not include commercial PlayStation games or proprietary BIOS files. Users must supply content they have the legal right to use. Gamma is not affiliated with Sony or PlayStation. Gamma’s official site and its license information describe the app and its licensing.
That distinction matters: downloading an emulator does not grant permission to download copyrighted games or firmware. Whether making or using a game image is lawful depends on how it was obtained and on the law where you live. Gamma’s terms and policy put responsibility for lawful content on the user.

Why the May 2024 release mattered
Apple’s 2024 App Store guideline changes opened the way for game-console emulators to be distributed through the store. Gamma arrived in that first wave. Contemporary coverage described it as the first dedicated PS1 emulator available through the App Store after the policy change; read that as a claim about the distribution channel, not as a claim that no PS1 emulator had ever run on iOS. Gamma is also not the only official iOS route to PS1 emulation. RetroArch, a multi-system emulator frontend whose cores include PS1 support, later arrived on the App Store. Delta, meanwhile, helped bring emulator apps into wider view but is a separate project and does not make Gamma a Delta product. Delta’s project and Libretro’s App Store announcement document that broader release context.
What Gamma supports
Gamma is listed as an iPhone and iPad app. Check the current App Store listing for the live minimum operating-system requirement, availability, developer name, and version details; those can change. Performance also depends on the device, operating-system version, game, rendering settings, controller, and any sync configuration, so one device’s results should not be treated as a guarantee for every iPhone or iPad.

These are feature descriptions, not an independent compatibility or stability test. Claims such as “number one in game compatibility” and “completely crash-free” are Gamma’s own App Store marketing, not measured guarantees for every title. Install Gamma from the App Store
- Open the Apple App Store on your iPhone or iPad and search for Gamma – PS 1 Game Emulator.
- Check that the developer is ZODTTD LLC before downloading.
- Install the app and open it. Grant only the permissions needed for features you choose to use.
- Obtain your game files separately and import them into Gamma using Files or another supported transfer method.
The U.S. App Store listing describes Gamma as free to download with in-app purchases. The exact offer and price can vary by country and date; check the purchase sheet in your own storefront for the current Gamma Pro or other in-app purchase terms.
Import legally obtained game files
Gamma’s import guide lists .bin/.cue, .iso, and .img formats for the Files-app import path. Use game images you are entitled to use; this guide does not direct readers to ROM downloads.

Import with Files
- In Files, locate the game image or image files.
- Press and hold the file, tap Share, then choose Gamma.
- For a game made up of separate
.binand.cuefiles, keep both together and preserve the filenames referenced by the cue sheet.
If a disc image has multiple tracks, importing a lone .bin while leaving out its matching .cue or other track files can prevent the game from launching correctly or cause missing audio.
Transfer from a computer or cloud storage
Gamma’s guide also describes transferring files through Finder on a Mac or iTunes on supported computer workflows: connect the device, open its Files section, and drag the game files into Gamma’s document folder. Alternatively, store files in iCloud Drive or another service available in Files, then import them from there. See Gamma’s importing guide for its current steps and supported formats.
When a PS1 BIOS may be useful
A BIOS is the PlayStation’s proprietary firmware, not a game file. Gamma’s materials indicate that some games may run without one, but that does not promise BIOS-free compatibility for every title. A legally obtained BIOS may improve compatibility or accuracy for some games. Gamma does not supply proprietary PlayStation BIOS files, so users who need one must provide a lawful copy. The app’s policy also says BIOS presence may be diagnostic information associated with support or bug reports; that disclosure does not mean Gamma automatically uploads the BIOS simply because it is present. Gamma’s policy explains its data handling.
Choose controls, rendering, and saves deliberately
Touchscreen or controller
Touch controls are convenient when you want to start playing without extra hardware, but they cover part of the screen and lack the tactile feedback of physical buttons. A controller is often more comfortable for platformers, fighting games, racing games, and titles that use analog input. Gamma lists Bluetooth and wired controller support, but compatibility depends on the controller and device; check their current support information rather than assuming every model works. Landscape orientation is usually more practical with a physical controller. Screen mirroring can also make play on a larger display more comfortable.
Upscaling and PGXP
Higher-resolution rendering can make a 3D game look sharper, while PGXP geometry correction can reduce visual wobble in supported games. These options are not universal improvements: behavior varies by title and settings, and greater rendering demands can affect battery use or reveal graphical differences. If a game looks wrong or performs poorly, compare its appearance with enhancements disabled before changing unrelated settings.
Save states and memory cards
A save state captures the emulator’s current state and can resume play from points where the game itself may not offer a save. A memory-card save is created through the game’s normal save system and is generally more portable between emulators and configurations. Use in-game memory-card saves as the primary record of progress and treat save states as a convenience: they can become unreliable after changes to the emulator version, rendering settings, or game image.

Gamma lists memory-card management, including importing and exporting cards. Back up memory-card files before deleting the app, changing sync providers, or experimenting with emulator versions. Optional cloud synchronization is useful for moving selected data, but it should not replace an independent backup.

“The app does not automatically upload your game files” and “the app involves no data processing” are different claims. Gamma’s policy says game files, BIOS files, saves, and related data normally stay on the device unless a user chooses a feature that transmits them, such as a community submission, support attachment, or Gamma Sync. Sync can use connected Google Drive or Dropbox accounts to store selected emulator data.
The same policy says the free version may show third-party ads. Depending on region and permissions, advertising and consent partners may process information such as IP address, advertising or device identifiers, app and ad interactions, and diagnostic data. Gamma also describes collecting app and device information, product-interaction data, diagnostics, and purchase or membership information. It says Gamma itself does not receive IDFA or IDFV, while advertising partners may engage in tracking as Apple defines it when permitted or otherwise allowed. Disabling Apple’s tracking permission does not necessarily stop every form of advertising, analytics, or first-party product measurement. Review Gamma’s current privacy policy and the App Store privacy details if these distinctions affect your choice.

Gamma is free to download in the U.S. storefront with in-app purchases, but that does not mean it is ad-free. Gamma Pro or supporter benefits may change what is offered; inspect the live purchase screen for the current price, billing type, and included features before paying.
Gamma, RetroArch, or Provenance?

Gamma is the straightforward choice to consider when the priority is a dedicated PS1 experience. RetroArch offers more system and configuration breadth, while Provenance is oriented toward a wider console library. Compare the current versions’ controls, save handling, privacy terms, and availability in your region rather than assuming one is best for everyone.
Troubleshoot common problems
The game does not appear or launch
- Check whether the file is still inside a compressed archive and whether its format is one Gamma’s import guide supports.
- For multi-file discs, keep the
.cueand its referenced.bintracks together, with matching filenames; import the full set rather than one track alone. - Re-import from Files and check whether the image is complete. If a title needs a BIOS, use only one you are legally entitled to use.
- If the problem persists, consult Gamma’s current support information and note the game, image format, device, operating-system version, and Gamma version.
The game runs but has no music or sound effects
An incomplete or incorrectly structured disc image is one possible cause, especially if a cue sheet or audio tracks were left out. Check the image files and their references before changing graphics settings; rendering options do not repair a missing disc track.
A multi-disc game will not change discs
Keep all discs available in Gamma and use its disc-swap control where the current app version provides one. Gamma’s listing mentions multi-disc support, including update notes about disc swapping for certain formats, but the exact behavior depends on the image format and app version.

A save seems to be missing
- Check both the game’s memory-card save and Gamma save states; they are separate.
- Look for an overwritten card or a cloud-sync conflict, and confirm that the game was not re-imported as a different file or region.
- Review Gamma Sync and connected storage, then export or back up the memory card before making further changes.
A controller will not connect or has incorrect buttons
- Confirm the controller is paired in iOS settings.
- Reconnect it before launching the game and review Gamma’s controller mapping.
- Test whether the issue affects one game or all games, and try another supported controller if available.
- Check the current Gamma version and its App Store update notes; controller and Bluetooth-keyboard fixes have changed over time.
