Steam is a separate PC storefront. Its listing advertises cross-platform multiplayer, Steam Cloud, Steam achievements, split-screen support and online co-op, but it also requires a linked Xbox Live third-party account. Steam ownership does not automatically grant the Microsoft Store version, and the Steam and Microsoft Store listings do not establish identical saves, DLC entitlements or achievements between storefronts.
Where to download Gears 5
Xbox app or Microsoft Store
- Update Windows.
- Install or update the Xbox app for PC. Microsoft currently requires Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later for the app.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or has the qualifying Game Pass subscription.
- Search for Gears 5, open its listing and select Install.
- Choose the library drive if prompted. Allow the Xbox app, Microsoft Store and Gaming Services to finish component updates.
- Launch from the Xbox app or Start menu, then complete the requested Xbox sign-in and synchronization.
If the game is missing, check the account shown in both the Xbox app and Microsoft Store. Do not buy it again until the entitlement is confirmed.

- Let Steam download and verify the files.

PC Game Pass
The Xbox page currently presents Gears 5: Game of the Year Edition in the Game Pass catalog. Catalog inclusion, plan eligibility, regional availability and pricing can change, so check the live listing before subscribing. Game Pass provides access while the subscription and catalog entitlement remain active; it is not permanent ownership.
Storage and Windows requirements
The official Xbox page states that the game requires up to 80 GB of storage, subject to change. Treat that as a baseline rather than an exact download size: editions, language files, updates and temporary installation data can require more free space. Leave additional capacity available for patches and shader caches.
- The Xbox app itself requires Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or newer.
- Install on an SSD when possible for shorter loading times; no particular SSD performance gain is guaranteed.
- Laptop results vary with power mode, cooling and whether the discrete GPU is active.

Steam displays its own compatibility information, including legacy Windows entries. Check the live Steam page before treating those historical requirements as a current guarantee.

Hivebusters is a separate campaign starring Lahni, Keegan and Mac on the Galangi islands. Do not assume it is included with every standard-edition installation. Boost accelerates multiplayer and PvE progression; the developer describes it as progression speed rather than a competitive advantage (official progression explanation).

Campaign and co-op
The campaign follows Kait Diaz and her connection to the enemy threat. The official listing supports up to three-player online or split-screen campaign co-op. Later playthroughs can carry character and weapon skins forward and add bonus difficulties and modifiers.

Versus
Versus provides competitive player-versus-player modes, including online and split-screen play. Steam advertises cross-platform multiplayer, but that claim should not be expanded into a promise of identical progression or purchases across Steam and Xbox.
Horde
Horde is cooperative wave-based PvE. Players select characters and classes, defend against successive waves and build progression around class abilities.
Escape
Escape is a separate co-op PvE mode built around moving through hostile hive environments and reaching an exit.
Map Builder
Steam lists a level editor. Treat it as a mode-specific creation tool, not a general-purpose campaign editor.

First-launch settings and performance tips
- Run the built-in graphics benchmark if it is available in your build.
- Start with the Recommended preset, then lower resolution scale, shadows and effects before making larger changes.
- Cap frame rate to a stable value if frame pacing is uneven.
- Use variable refresh rate only when your monitor, GPU and Windows setup support it correctly; test with it disabled if pacing worsens.
- Keep Windows and GPU drivers current without assuming one driver version is universally required.
- On laptops, confirm the game is using the intended dedicated GPU and use a suitable power mode.
- Use a controller for the traditional Gears layout or configure keyboard and mouse to your preference.
- Set subtitle, narration, remapping and camera options before starting co-op.
- Use wired networking or strong 5 GHz/6 GHz Wi-Fi for multiplayer and pause bandwidth-heavy downloads.
Fix common download, account and launch problems
The game does not appear in the Xbox app
- Confirm the Xbox app account has the purchase or Game Pass entitlement.
- Open Microsoft Store and verify it is signed into the same account.
- Update the Xbox app and Microsoft Store, then restart Windows.
- Search for Gears 5 directly instead of using an old library shortcut.
- Check the live Xbox/Game Pass listing for regional or catalog changes.
- Use Microsoft/Xbox account or purchase support if the entitlement is still missing; do not purchase a duplicate copy.
The Install button is missing or installation fails
- Confirm Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later for the Xbox app.

- Open the game’s Manage installation screen.
- Confirm the edition and optional add-ons.
- Verify the Microsoft account that owns the entitlement.
- Restart the Xbox app after all updates finish.
- Do not buy duplicate DLC until ownership is established.
Steam asks for Xbox sign-in
This is expected because Steam lists Xbox Live as a required third-party account. Use the intended Microsoft account and avoid linking the wrong profile.

- Update GPU drivers and close overlays or unnecessary background applications.
- Lower resolution scale and demanding effects first.
- Cap the frame rate to a stable value.
