Xbox and The Coalition’s published details point to a first-contact horror story, a rebuilt combat foundation, several ways to play, and an origin for one of the series’ signature weapons. Here are seven useful details to know, based on information available as of October 3, 2026.
1. The Locust are meant to feel frighteningly unfamiliar
E-Day takes place 14 years before the original Gears of War, when Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago encounter the Locust for the first time. That changes the frame from a later-war battle against familiar enemies to a story about a sudden, terrifying emergence.

Art Director Aryan Hanbeck said players would see the monsters through the eyes of people encountering them for the first time. Creative Director Matt Searcy described E-Day as the moment that brings together the franchise’s themes and shapes everything that follows. The game’s premise is therefore not just a younger-Marcus setup: it returns the Locust to the role of an unknown threat.
Xbox’s current game listing and The Coalition’s developer interview place the story on Sera at the start of the Locust invasion.

2. Campaign co-op has a platform-specific split-screen limit
The campaign can be played solo, with another player in split-screen on console, or online with up to four players. The split-screen option is specifically limited to console; the published details do not establish split-screen on PC.

3. Horde Siege and Versus serve different multiplayer audiences
Multiplayer is split between cooperative PvE and competitive PvP rather than being one undifferentiated mode. Horde Siege is described as an evolved, larger-scale wave-survival mode for co-op play. Versus is the competitive lane, with new maps and refined 4v4 modes.

The Coalition’s multiplayer deep dive also clarifies a small but practical distinction: poses are lobby or match-screen stances, not gameplay emotes you can trigger during a fight.
4. The familiar cover-shooter foundation is being rebuilt
The Coalition says every animation, asset, and feature was crafted from the ground up, while the gameplay sandbox is unified across modes. Xbox describes cover combat paired with modernized movement and traversal. Together, those statements suggest a deliberate refresh of how Gears plays, not simply a reuse of old assets.
The game is built in Unreal Engine 5. Xbox lists 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second across Campaign and Multiplayer, with a compatible display required. Those are published targets, not independently measured performance results; they should not be read as a guarantee for every device or setup. 5. The Lancer’s history begins before the chainsaw
The early MK 1 Lancer shown in the 2024 reveal has a detachable bayonet rather than the series’ familiar chainsaw. That is a story detail as much as a weapon variation: the iconic Chainsaw Lancer does not yet exist at this point in the timeline.
Brand Director Nicole Fawcette called E-Day “a story of many origins,” including the Chainsaw Lancer, and said the weapon’s eventual arrival matters to making this feel like a Gears game. The interview establishes that the game intends to address the weapon’s origin, but does not reveal exactly how. The Coalition interview is the source for the bayonet-era weapon and the developers’ comments.
6. The campaign preview introduces more than Marcus and Dom
Xbox Wire’s campaign preview begins at the opening of Act 2, in the early hours after the Locust emerge. Kalona’s City Hall has been converted into a COG base, where Bravo Squad assembles with Marcus, Dom, Lucas Reyes, and Mags Carter.
That preview establishes a wider squad and a specific early setting, but it is not a complete campaign synopsis. It offers a glimpse of the people and circumstances surrounding the opening stages rather than a full account of the story. See the Xbox Wire campaign preview for those details.

Release date, platforms, and access
As listed by Xbox on October 3, 2026, Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled for October 6, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11, with Microsoft Store and Steam storefront references. Xbox lists it as included with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Availability and subscription terms can vary by region or change, so confirm the live listing for your account.
An October 1 Xbox Wire announcement describes Premium Edition early access. That is separate from the October 6 standard release date: check the exact edition terms and regional listing if you are deciding when you can play. Collector’s Edition is a physical-collectibles option
The Collector’s Edition announcement lists a 15-inch statue, SteelBook, replica COG tags, an in-game photograph replica, and an art print, alongside Premium Edition content. Xbox says quantities are limited and availability varies by region. Check the official announcement for the exact platform edition and current availability.
Customization details are launch plans, not a promise about every future update
The Coalition’s multiplayer deep dive says more than 60 character skins are planned for launch. Weapon skin sets apply across customizable weapons, and nearly all customization items can be earned through play. The same developer overview says there is no battle pass or Tour of Duty, and frames earning items through play as the intended approach; that statement should not be stretched into a guarantee about all future paid content. The companion book is about making the game, not playing it
The Art and Making of Gears of War: E-Day is an official companion book from Insight Editions featuring developer interviews about art, story, sound, and design.
