The Coalition has not published a best-in-slot mod recipe, so treat this as a role-based starting approach: choose unlocked weapon and gear mods to meet the mission’s needs, then adjust as your class and squad develop.
What Assault is designed to do
The official Multiplayer Deep Dive describes Assault as a flexible midrange class. Its Sonic Disruptor stuns waves of incoming enemies and is particularly useful when defending an objective. Assault also deals increased damage while in cover.
Those traits make Assault a natural starting choice when you want to contribute steady midrange fire and help a team hold ground. They do not mean you should remain in one position regardless of the fight: the game’s gameplay overview emphasizes reading the combat space and moving from cover to cover. Using cover deliberately is a way to benefit from the class bonus while keeping your position useful as the squad advances.
A practical Assault setup for Horde Siege
Choose positions that support the objective
Look for cover with useful lines of fire toward the route enemies are using or the objective the squad needs to defend. When the fight moves, move with it rather than treating the cover bonus as a reason to stay put. This positioning advice applies the published cover bonus and general combat guidance; it is not a prescribed developer build.

Use the Sonic Disruptor to steady a threatened hold
Save the Sonic Disruptor for a moment when an incoming wave threatens an objective or when stunning enemies could give teammates room to regroup and respond. The ability’s wave-stunning effect and objective-defense use are official class details; choosing the exact moment to deploy it is a tactical judgment based on the encounter.
Let unlocked mods solve a real need
Class progression unlocks weapons, equipment, Armor Mods, Tactical Gear Mods, and Weapon Mods. The Coalition says launch classes have 30 levels, and weapon customization is shared across classes. As you unlock options, choose upgrades that address what your loadout or mission needs—for example, more manageable weapon handling or better survivability—rather than chasing a supposedly universal combination. The official material does not rank specific Assault mods or identify a proven best setup.

How to adapt the build to a mission and squad
Before a mission, consider where the team is likely to defend, whether Assault’s midrange flexibility fits the expected fighting, which relevant mods you have unlocked, and what roles your teammates are bringing. If the squad already has the objective-defense tools it needs, another role may be a better fit; if a hold looks vulnerable, Assault’s disruptor and cover damage bonus may be useful. These are choices to make for the mission, not fixed class-count rules.
The developer explicitly says, “While our classes are meant to complement one another; there is no ‘right’ way to set up a squad.” The official deep dive even allows experimentation with all-Breacher squads. Build around the group and the encounter instead of assuming every team requires a particular Assault count.

Keep the advice scoped to Horde Siege
This mod-focused build guidance is for Horde Siege. The official multiplayer overview says Versus uses fair starts and has no weapon mods, so class-progression and weapon-mod choices do not transfer directly to that mode.

Weapon feel and movement are subject to balance changes. In its launch-period update, The Coalition reported post-beta adjustments to the Prototype Lancer, Lancer Mk1, Vulcan, Hammerburst, Gnasher, Snub, and movement and cover behavior. Those changes are a reason not to treat beta-era weapon values as current. Check the latest official patch notes before making a loadout decision based on specific weapon tuning.
