Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel about the first Locust emergence on Sera, following younger Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago 14 years before the original Gears of War. Its June 9, 2024 reveal trailer frames that event as a frightening, unfamiliar invasion—not a full account of the game’s plot. Here’s what Xbox and The Coalition confirmed, what the trailer actually shows, and where speculation begins.
What E-Day means—and what the announcement confirmed
“E-Day” means Emergence Day: the day the Locust first emerge on Sera. Xbox announced Gears of War: E-Day during the June 9, 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, describing it as an origin story told through Marcus Fenix’s perspective. The story follows younger Marcus and Dom Santiago as the invasion begins, 14 years before the original Gears of War. It is a new mainline entry, not a spin-off. Xbox Wire’s announcement interview has the studio’s explanation.

The Coalition’s Creative Director, Matt Searcy, explained the choice of setting this way: “That’s the moment it all comes together. It’s the heart of the Gears universe. Everything that happens is shaped by this day.” That is the studio’s perspective on why E-Day matters to the series, not a promise about what a later sequel will cover. Xbox also said the team was not abandoning the storylines of Gears 4 and Gears 5.
Gears of War: E-Day trailer breakdown
Marcus meets the Locust without the advantage of experience
The trailer opens with Marcus in an immediate struggle against a Locust Drone. In Xbox’s interview, the developers stress that this is the first time the familiar soldier has faced this kind of enemy. He uses a nearby television to defeat it, not the later chainsaw-equipped Lancer. That improvised fight presents Marcus and the world as unprepared for the threat; it does not establish the circumstances of every encounter in the campaign.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
The Drone is staged as physically imposing rather than as routine cannon fodder. The Coalition’s Studio Art Director, Aryan Hanbeck, described the design goal: “We transformed the drone into something fearsome, physically intimidating, and utterly brutal.” That is useful context for the trailer’s creature design, but it does not tell us how every Locust enemy will behave in play.
The MK 1 Lancer has a bayonet, not a chainsaw
A brief glimpse of the MK 1 Lancer shows a detachable bayonet. Xbox’s interview distinguishes this earlier weapon from the later chainsaw-equipped Lancer. The trailer therefore gives a visual reason for the question “Why is Marcus using a bayonet Lancer?”: the game is set before the familiar chainsaw Lancer exists in its later form.

The Coalition’s Brand Director, Nicole Fawcette, called E-Day “a story of many origins,” including the Chainsaw Lancer, but did not disclose its specific origin. She joked, “[The Chainsaw Lancer] doesn’t currently exist in that period… but it’s not a Gears game if you’re not chainsawing Locust!” The line is playful, not a confirmation of how or when the weapon will appear. The interview deliberately leaves that detail open.
“Mad World” returns as an instrumental reimagining
Yes, the reveal trailer uses “Mad World.” Xbox credits composer Adam Lastiwka with creating an original instrumental reimagining. The choice recalls the earlier Gears of War commercial, which presented its hero as vulnerable and isolated rather than simply triumphant. Images of Marcus and Dom looking over Locust-damaged city ruins carry a similar mood. The song and visuals establish a tone; they do not confirm a particular scene or plot outcome.

The reveal was described as in-engine Unreal Engine 5 footage
Xbox’s 2024 interview describes the trailer as in-engine footage powered by Unreal Engine 5. That means the reveal was presented as a representation of the game’s engine, not as a guarantee of identical final visuals or performance across platforms.
The Coalition’s Studio Technical Director, Kate Rayner, said, “With the advancements in Unreal Engine 5, the leap in technical capabilities is tremendous.” Xbox Wire also reported Rayner’s comparison that the game had “over 100 times more environment and character details than Gears 5.” This is the developer’s detail-count comparison, not an independent measurement, a frame-rate figure, or a general performance benchmark. Neither statement establishes how the released game performs on a particular system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the trailer supports—and what remains speculation
The reveal supports a few grounded conclusions: the story centers on the first Locust emergence, Marcus and Dom are younger, and the trailer wants the invasion to feel sudden and terrifying. Its bayonet-equipped Lancer and instrumental callback to “Mad World” help situate the game in the series’ past while echoing its cinematic identity.
It does not establish the complete plot, mission structure, campaign length, playable roster, character deaths, or the exact chronology of every weapon. Predictions about those details should be treated as speculation, not confirmed story information. The developers’ comments on the Chainsaw Lancer make that distinction especially clear: they acknowledge the weapon’s place among the series’ origins while withholding its specific origin story.
